PASTOR’S MESSAGE In today’s Gospel from Matthew 5:13-16 we read: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hid- den.” Salt and light are such simple yet profound images for us to meditate upon in regards to our Chris- tian calling. Salt has many uses – especially as a preservative and to enrich the flavor of food. Our life of faith is a journey that has its ups and downs. When we are in a down cycle, we may be overly focused on our own problems and issues and not as aware of those around us. Or we may grow weary of what seems like the dull routine of our daily lives. This gospel passage warns us against disengaging from others, from the Church, from Christ. Only by having an active prayer life can we remain connected to the life source of our faith. Prayer works as a preservative and anchor of our faith. Only by making the connection that our calling requires more than focusing on our own lives and entails giving of ourselves in assisting others can we retain the flavor of our faith. The first reading from Isaiah 58:7-10 prompts us to serve the needy in our midst, the hungry, the homeless and the naked. Isaiah also calls us to a high standard of morality by avoiding op- pression, false accusation, and malicious speech. By treating others with justice and generosity we be- come a beacon of light for others. Next Sunday we will conduct our annual Archbishop’s Appeal. It is a rare opportunity to help many reli- gious and charitable entities with one singular gift; 23% of the 4.5 million dollar goal goes to Social Ser- vices such as Caritas Legal Services, Catholic Counseling Services, Catholic Healthcare Clinic, Guadalupe Community Center, Guadalupe Home, Pregnancy Services, Domestic Human Trafficking Prevention and Support, Veterans Specific Assistance, Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide, Seton Home, St. Peter-St. Joseph’s Children Home, etc. Think of all of the light that the Appeal spreads throughout our Archdiocese in assisting those in need! May we take time this coming week to reflect upon how we can continue to be salt and light for the world. — Fr. Dennis

Your generous gift to the Appeal can be made by filling out the pledge card sent to your home or at your parish. Once completed, place your Appeal pledge card in the offertory during Mass. Gifts can also be made online at www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal or over the phone with the Appeal Office at 210-734-1604. Thank you for your generosity.

2017 Archbishop’s Appeal Prayer Merciful God, You call us to be your disciples to proclaim the Good News to all we meet. You sent us your Holy Spirit to guide us as we carry our your sacred work. Help us to respond to your people in need through the Archbishop’s Appeal, Use our ready hearts and our willing hands to show them the face of your Son Jesus. Unite us as one in mind and heart as we work together to build your kingdom. Bless us as shepherds of your good will and fill us with your Spirit’s gifts. Help us to remember that, like Peter and Andrew, James, John, Mary Magdalen, and like the mother of your Son Jesus We too are called to be your Disciples, Sent by the Spirit. Amen.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the custom of the stational liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twentieth century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the stational church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the grounds of the Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Constantine. She dedicated her life to finding the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the city of Rome for Avignon, the religious institutions of Rome collapsed and the church was abandoned. Centuries later it was given into the care of monks. Amazingly, it concealed a forgotten treasure. In 1492 repairmen took down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscription “Title of the Cross,” and within, an ancient wooden tablet on which was carved the inscription dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. No one is certain that this is authentic, although its discovery was enough to give the church great prestige among pilgrims. The veneration of the relic of the cross located here was a factor in shaping our restored Holy Week. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The message in this week’s read- ings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offen- sive joke.
