But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hid- den.” Salt and light are such simple yet profound images for us to meditate upon in regards to our Chris- tian calling. Salt has many uses – especially as a preservative and to enrich the flavor of food. Our life of faith is a journey that has its ups and downs. When we are in a down cycle, we may be overly focused on our own problems and issues and not as aware of those around us. Or we may grow weary of what seems like the dull routine of our daily lives. This gospel passage warns us against disengaging from others, from the Church, from Christ. Only by having an active prayer life can we remain connected to the life source of our faith. Prayer works as a preservative and anchor of our faith. Only by making the connection that our calling requires more than focusing on our own lives and entails giving of ourselves in assisting others can we retain the flavor of our faith. The first reading from Isaiah 58:7-10 prompts us to serve the needy in our midst, the hungry, the homeless and the naked. Isaiah also calls us to a high standard of morality by avoiding op- pression, false accusation, and malicious speech. By treating others with justice and generosity we be- come a beacon of light for others. Next Sunday we will conduct our annual Archbishop’s Appeal. It is a rare opportunity to help many reli- gious and charitable entities with one singular gift; 23% of the 4.5 million dollar goal goes to Social Ser- vices such as Caritas Legal Services, Catholic Counseling Services, Catholic Healthcare Clinic, Guadalupe Community Center, Guadalupe Home, Pregnancy Services, Domestic Human Trafficking Prevention and Support, Veterans Specific Assistance, Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide, Seton Home, St. Peter-St. Joseph’s Children Home, etc. Think of all of the light that the Appeal spreads throughout our Archdiocese in assisting those in need! May we take time this coming week to reflect upon how we can continue to be salt and light for the world. — Fr.
