In this memorable talk, he compared the coming of the Bishop Jubilarian to the Diocese of Green Bay as “a renewal of the spiritual nuptial vows pronounced first on March 3, 1868.” The personal episcopal shield of Bishop Rhode featured the motto “Vias tuas, Domine, edoce me” (Your ways, O Lord, teach me thoroughly). It guided him to do what was needed for the diocese.

He received a Navy Achievement Medal, National Defense Ribbon, served two tours overseas, and was a member of three meritorious units. He was specialty-trained in prosthodontics (a dental specialty) at the National Naval Dental School at Bethesda, Maryland, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He was honorably discharged from the Navy at the rank of Lieutenant Commander, in 1992.

    History of the Angels Parish, Green Bay, WI. Golden Jubilee 1898-1948, p. 7- 51 CAP at Orchard Lake. POLISH IMMIGRATION TO GREEN BAY Up to the year 1840, Green Bay had been predominantly populated by French and English residents. From that year, however, large groups of other nationalities from Europe began to arrive. They were the Irish, the Germans, the Belgians and the Hollanders. The Poles did not come to Green Bay in any large numbers until after the Civil War although some Polish families made a brief stop here earlier. The first Polish immigrants arrived here by sailboat in July, 1856, and numbered six families. They were the families of Jacob Werechowski, Michael Kozyczkowski, Adam Klesmit, Joseph Szufler, Joseph Daczyk and John Zynda. But their stay in Green Bay lasted only a few days. They left Green Bay for Stevens Point, probably by stage-coach or on foot, and made the near one hundred mile trip over rough roads in one week. Near Stevens Point, they formed the nu- cleus of the first Polish settlement in Wisconsin at Polonia. First Poles Reside in Green Bay in 1864 Because St. Mary of the Angels parish was originally established for the Poles of Green Bay, it is fitting to devote more space to their settlement and growth in this city. The first Poles to reside permanently in Green Bay came here in 1864. In 1868, they were visited by a certain Father Szulak, a Polish Jesuit missionary. Traditionally, a larger arrival of Polish immigrants at Green Bay is said to have occurred around 1870.

A week ago Sunday evening I received an unexpected phone call from Archbishop Christophe Pierre, recently appointed apostolic nuncio to the United States, el embasador del Santo Padre Francisco. Administrative History The Catholic Church Extension Society was established October 18, 1905, to serve the home missions, areas that lacked personnel, organization, and finances. The Extension Society has helped to build churches, educate and support clergy and seminarians, and has provided financial assistance for dioceses in the western and southern states as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Scope and Content The diocesan correspondence spans the years 1906-1962 and covers the United States, Canada, Caribbean, Central America, and the Pacific Rim area. These records consist mainly of correspondence between the diocese and the main Extension Society office with some newspaper articles. Photographs included with the correspondence have been removed to the Catholic Church Extension Society photograph collection.

    St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Champion, Wisconsin 1862 – 2012 1 History of St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Champion In the 1850’s, times were very hard in the Country of Belgium. Over population had resulted in farms becoming smaller. The crops were suffering a reduction because of drought and diseases, including a severe potato blight (which lasted many years). Many farmers didn’t own their farmland, but depended on landlords for their income. Some of the workers depended on successful crops for their food, because for their labors they would receive a certain amount of a harvest. The peasants could not gain a decent living from the production of their land alone. So many of them found additional sources of income in rural industries such as distilling, brewing, sugar milling. Some home activities were cutlery, straw plaiting, and nail making. There was famine and epidemics of cholera and typhus, which caused many deaths. Some of the rural work force preferred to search elsewhere for more prosperous conditions. It is in this way immigration to the United States constituted a last hope. After Wisconsin became a state in 1848, the state government initiated a campaign to attract settlers. In 1851 a handbook called “The Emigrant’s Handbook and Guide to Wisconsin”, was circulated in Belgium. The campaign was advertised in European papers and urged people to move to Wisconsin, where land was cheap, along with freedom and opportunity. The major time period for Belgian Immigration was in 1855 and 1856, although many others came in later years. On May 18, 1853 the first Belgian Immigrants from Grez-Doiceau, in the province of Brabant, estimated at being 81 individuals, sailed from their homeland, heading toward the United States.
