Grand Knight Hal B. Lane III The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family. The special 830-980-6848 devotion which proposes the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Deputy Grand Knight as the model of virtue of all Christian households began in the 17th Tom Brod century. It started almost simultaneously in Canada and France: the 210-392-9839 Association of the Holy Family was founded in Montreal in 1663, and Financial Secretary Joe Vocks by the Daughters of the Holy Family in Paris in 1674. This devotion 830-885-4340 soon spread and in 1893 Leo XIII expressed his approval of a feast Chancellor under this title and himself composed part of the Office. On account Ricardo Garcia of the flight into Egypt this feast has been observed by the Copts from 210-843-7157 early times. The feast was welcomed by succeeding Pontiffs as an Treasurer Matt Wohlfeil efficacious means for bringing home to the Christian people the 830-388-6296 example of the Holy Family at Nazareth, and by the restoration of the Recorder true spirit of family life, stemming, in some measure, the evils of Paul Barton present-day society. 830-743-1677 In the words of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII, "Nothing truly can be more Advocate Greg Canfield salutary or efficacious for Christian families to meditate upon than the 830-438-8266 example of this Holy Family, which embraces the perfection and Warden completeness of all domestic virtues." Dear Brother Knights, Another January has come and gone. Now our focus is on Lent, which is fast approaching. Ash Wednesday will be on February 26th and our Lenten Fish Fries will begin that Friday the 28th. We will need all the volunteers we can get for cooking, running, serving and cleanup. If you have not participated in the Fish Fries in the past, I encourage you to come out, if not for just a few hours, to join the other Knights in providing this meal for the Parish and community. Lent is a time of spiritual preparation prior to the Easter season. It is also a time for penance and prayer and it is not just about giving up our favorite food. It is about going a little bit further and giving up things like hatred, pride, non-forgiving and helping others such as the poor and the needy. So whether you give something up or not this Lenten season, let us look at it as a sort of ‘Spring cleaning” for our lives, after all, the goal of every Christian is to leave Lent a stronger and more vital person of faith than when we entered. At our next Council meeting, February 12th, I will be looking for a few volunteers for each Mass the weekend of the 22nd & 23rd. The New Evangelization Team has started a Welcome/Cookie Weekend every 4th weekend of the Month and the Knights will be hosting that weekend. This will be discussed in more detail at the meeting. Once again, thank you Brothers for all your hard work and may God Bless you and your families.

Hill of The Cross Clean-up Save the Date: February 15, 2020 Coordinators: Brother Thomas Rubio, Ricardo Garcia The Hill of the Cross was built in 1984 by a small group of faith filled parishioners. Through the years, numerous folks have freely shared their time and talents in an attempt to maintain this treasure. As an example, each year dozens of volunteers clean up the area and spread new mulch. However, time and weather have taken its toll and numerous repairs and replacements are needed to preserve the beauty of the stations.

HILL OF THE CROSS CLEANUP, SATURDAY February 15, 2020 The Hill of the Cross (HOTC) is truly one of the Church’s treasures, and it is used all year by our parishioners and by many groups that come to our church mini- retreats. The annual HOTC cleanup will be on February 15, 2020. Everyone is invited to help clean-up and share in fellowship and service to the community. The cleanup will start at 7:30 am…with more volunteers it should only take 1- 1/2 to 2 hrs. Tools that are needed are wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, pitchforks, loppers for small brush cutting, and weed eater. We will be spreading mulch on the path and trimming shrubs and trees as needed. Refreshments will be provided. Cookie/Welcome Weekend February 22,23, 2020 all Masses

Brothers, The New Evangelization Team has started the Welcome/Cookie Weekends every month on the 4th weekend of the month to recognize birthdays, anniversaries and new parishioners. It is our hope that each ministry will take a turn to serve the cookies. This will give each ministry an opportunity to advertise what they do, when they meet and give the parishioners information on how to get involved in our vibrant community. The Knights would need 3-4 members minimum after each mass to serve the cookies and be in the Gathering Space to greet the parishioners and answer any questions about The Knights of Columbus. You can decorate the table and have handouts available. You can advertise your upcoming events (like the Fish Fry Fridays!) or have a calendar of events/meetings, etc. - whatever you would like to use to advertise the KCs and promote membership.

GK Hal B Lane will have a sign up sheet at our next Council 8521 meeting Feb 12th, 2020. Our chance to advertise/promote the Knights of Columbus, and serve cookies after each Mass. (GK Hal lane, e-mail sent out on Jan. 28, 2020)

Ash Wednesday will be on February 26th and is the beginning of the Lent. What is the purpose of Lent. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “the real aim of Lent is, above all else, to prepare men for the celebration of the death and Resurrection of Christ…the better the preparation the more effective the celebration will be. One can effectively relive the mystery only with purified mind and heart. The purpose of Lent is to provide that purification by weaning men from sin and selfishness through self-denial and prayer, by creating in them the desire to do God’s will and to make His kingdom come by making it come first of all in their hearts.”

Pope at Mass: ‘God will judge us with the same measure we have for others’

Pope Francis urges the faithful to relate to others in a truly “Christian” way which is generous and full of love, and he explains that we will be judged with the same measure with which we measure others.

By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis reflected on the liturgical reading from the Gospel of Mark on Thursday morning during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta noting that it is full of advice for the faithful.

The Christian ‘measure’

Highlighting the passage that says "The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,” the Pope said that at some point of our lives, and especially at the end of our existence, we are all called to account for how we have lived our life. These words, he explained, "tell us exactly what that moment will be like”, that is how we will be judged. He noted that while in chapter 25 of Matthew’s Gospel, the evangelist tells us "what we have to do”, today’s passage indicates the " with which we have to live. “By what measure do I measure others? By what measure do I measure myself? Is it a generous measure, full of God's love? Or is it a low level measure?” he said, underscoring the need to take stock not only of the bad or the good things we do, but of our daily lifestyle.

Jesus is our model

Each one of us - the Pope continued - has a style, "a way of measuring himself, things and others" and it will be the same measure the Lord will use with us. Those who judge others with selfishness, will be judged in the same way; those who have no pity and in order to climb in life "are capable of trampling on everyone's head", will be judged "without pity", he said. But Christians have a different model, Pope Francis insisted, and must ask themselves whether our parameters are those that Jesus asks of us.

A Christian who lacks the capacity to be humble, is not a true Christian, he explained recalling that Jesus “humbled himself unto death – even the death of the cross.”

“He was God, but he didn’t cling to that: he humbled Himself. This is the model,” he said.

Never fear the cross

Pope Francis went on to consider the example of a lifestyle he defined as "worldly" and thus incapable of following Jesus' model. He mentioned how sometimes complain to him when they find it difficult to transfer priests to parishes that “are considered of a lower category” because they think they are being punished, and said that they use a worldly measure to evaluate and judge rather than a Christian one.

Concluding, the Pope invited those present to live their lives with compassion and mercy and to ask the Lord for the grace to live in Christian way, never fearing the cross of humbleness “because this is the path that He has chosen to save us.”

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father Hail Mary Glory be to the Father
