Comin’ Home Baby Tributo a Herbie Mann Geoff Warren Quartet Geoff Warren – Flauti Raffaele Pallozzi – Tastiere Marco Di Marzio – Basso Bruno Marcozzi – Batteria e percussioni Herbie Mann – Flautista Jazz e Pioniere della World Music. Il mondo, secondo il flautista e compositore Herbie Mann, è un paradiso musicale utopico in cui il jazz è composto da musica afro-cubana, mediorientale, R & B e quasi ogni altra genere di musica. Herbert Jay Soloman, meglio conosciuto come Herbie Mann, fu tra i primi musicisti jazz a specializzarsi nel flauto e fu forse il più famoso flautista della musica jazz negli anni '60. Quando iniziò a suonare il flauto negli anni '40, non aveva modelli da cui imparare, nessun pioniere del flauto jazz da idolatrare. Così fu costretto a guardare altrove, sia dentro che fuori dal jazz, per sviluppare il suo approccio jazz al flauto. Tra le numerose influenze musicali, Mann è stato particolarmente attratto dai ritmi e dalle melodie del Sud America e dei Caraibi, ed è stato uno dei primi pionieri nella fusione tra Jazz e World-Music. Nel 1961 Mann fece un tour in Brasile e tornò negli Stati Uniti per registrare con musicisti brasiliani tra cui Baden Powell e Antonio Carlos Jobim. Questi album hanno contribuito a diffondere la bossa nova. Successivamente Mann è passato al soul jazz e negli anni '70 ha registrato album reggae, funk e disco. L1 SKYDORIGINALS 425 16 juni 2013 Arnold Rypens - Kirsten 2:11 1 Little Martha (Allman) Polydor ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND 3 Dit zijn The Originals bij L1 Radio, voor de tweede week op rij met Little Martha van The Allman Brothers Band, de laatste compositie van Duane Allman voor die op 24 jarige leeftijd verongelukte. Rockers van tegenwoordig moeten op die leeftijd hun eerste sporen nog verdienen, Duane had toen al een oeuvre bij elkaar waar nu 7 cd's mee gevuld staan op een Retrospectieve boxset die ons sedert vorige week tot leidraad dient. Waar waren we gebleven? Bij The Weight! 2:47 2 The Weight (Robertson) Rounder KING CURTIS II/25 Een tweede The Weights waar Duane Allman op meespeelt, die van King Curtis, die Duane had leren kennen tijdens de opname van datzelfde nummer maar dan voor Aretha Franklin en daar waren we vorige week gebleven. Duane had de grootste bewondering voor King Curtis om diens unieke mix van soul, blues, gospel & jazz en waar hij wat graag in meeging. Toen Curtis in 1971 in een vuurgevecht om het leven kwam was dat een hele schok voor Duane, ook voor Aretha trouwens die op de begrafenis zong. Bij de eerstvolgende gelegenheid live met zijn Allman Brothers Band versmolt Duane Soul Serenade van King Curtis in een medley met hun You Don't Love Me. We pikken in bij dat Soul Serenade- gedeelte. (starten bij 7:02): (tot 11:20) 4:18 3 Soul Serenade (Ousley/Dixon) Rounder ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND VII/4 Duane 'Skydog' Allman's versie van Soul Serenade was eerder al te horen op de Allman Brothers boxset Dreams, nu ook op Skydog - The Duane Allman Retrospective, mede samengesteld door zijn dochter Galadrielle die werkelijk met de kam door al haar vader's opnamen gegaan is om dan alleen maar hoogtepunten over te houden. -

We’d like to think that in a highly partisan modern world, we actually live up to the credo: “We New York@Night Report, You Decide”. No segment of jazz or improvised music or avant garde or 4 whatever you call it is overlooked, since only as a full quilt can we keep out the cold of commercialism. Interview: Cooper-Moore Sometimes it is more difficult, especially during the bleak winter months, to 6 by Kurt Gottschalk put together a good mixture of feature subjects but we quickly forget about that when June rolls around. It’s an embarrassment of riches, really, this first month of Artist Feature: Orrin Evans summer. Just like everyone pulls out shorts and skirts and sandals and flipflops, 7 by Terrell Holmes the city unleashes concert after concert, festival after festival. This month we have the Vision Fest; a mini-iteration of the Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT); the On The Cover: Dee Dee Bridgewater inaugural Blue Note Jazz Festival taking place at the titular club as well as other 9 by Marcia Hillman city venues; the always-overwhelming Undead Jazz Festival, this year expanded to four days, two boroughs and ten venues and the 4th annual Red Hook Jazz Encore: Lest We Forget: Festival in sight of the Statue of Liberty. -

About the Artists
ABOUT THE ARTISTS Grammy nominated pianist and Steinway Artist STEVE BARTA, has stayed true to his creative path as a composer, recording artist, producer, author and educator. He has performed his original works as a solo artist, with jazz ensembles and symphony orchestras. As a member of Herbie Mann and Jasil Brazz featuring Steve Barta, he recorded his widely acclaimed Blue River – a collection of Brazilian compositions. His contribution to the world of music includes 15 recordings that reflect his many influences, particularly Brazilian, jazz and classical. He has also worked with an extensive list of artists, including Al Jarreau, Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann, Dori Caymmi, B.B. King, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Paulinho da Costa, guitarist Ricardo Silveria and many more. In 2012, Barta was nominated for a Grammy award for Jumpin; Jazz Kids – an original storyline and collection of jazz compositions written for jazz ensemble and orchestra, along with his co-writer Mark Oblinger. He has written several works for symphony orchestra that have been performed worldwide. Barta is a music educator with over thirty years of experience teaching intermediate to advanced students, educators and professional musicians. He is the author of The Source (Hal Leonard Publishing) and has published several books of his arrangements. Hal Leonard Publishing also requested him to arrange several Beatles compositions for solo piano in their well-known, Beatles Songbook. He currently teaches private piano studies, as well as jazz theory, arranging and composition at Colorado College. KEITH REED grew up playing bluegrass banjo and guitar with a group of traditional bluegrass musicians from the southeast. -
SHCPS Summer Reading 2011 to Prepare, All Junior Academy
SHCPS Summer Reading 2011 This spring, SHCPS staff, families and community members all pitched in to clear the land across the street from the school on Eastern Avenue. Over the summer, the work will continue (Contact Christopher Young at [email protected] to help out!) so, upon our return to school in August, we can proudly unveil our Community Garden! In the spirit of this event, all classes will partake in a series of garden related projects that span across all content areas. To prepare, all Junior Academy students should read Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. This beautiful book, which has won the Buckeye Children’s Book Award and has been named a “Best Book” by the Young Adults Library, School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly, tells the stories of twelve characters who come together through the founding of a neighborhood garden in Cleveland, IL. It is a “hymn to a sense of community.” Please be aware that some of the characters in the book explore some sensitive topics. Parents, if you are uncomfortable with any of the issues this book touches upon, please allow your child to choose an alternative book from the list below, or another book of substance that focuses on gardens or other environmental endeavors. Better yet, read the book alongside your child so that you can serve as a mature sounding board as your child ponders the messages of the story. Enjoy! Students in all other grades should choose at least three books from the bibliography below. Try out some of the projects listed in the activity books too! Have fun! Prestige Label Discography
Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron. -
