PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Arcansiel - Swimming in the Sand
arcsits Arcansiel - Swimming In The Sand It has been ten years since Italian band Arcansiel released an album and that was Normality Of Perversion in 1994. 2004 sees the release of Swimming In The Sand, which is a sort of 'best of' compilation. I say 'sort of' because five of the six tracks here have appeared on past studio albums but, for this release, the band returned to the studio in 2003 to re-record the songs. With so much progressive rock to choose from these days, those of us with limited time (and finances) can not be expected to be familiar with everything out there so tend to stick with music from bands we know. A compilation such as this makes a lot of sense, giving those you have yet to hear the band a selection of the best tracks and for the existing fans of Arcansiel, a new version of these tracks. The band personnel has changed once again but original guitarist Gianni Opezzo is still there, Sandro Marinoni (tenor sax, flute) is back and Paolo Baltaro (vocals, bass, drums, keyboards, bagpipes) who joined the band for Normality, remains. Arcansiel came onto the scene at the time when Fish period Marillion was coming to an end and http://www.hairlessheartherald.co.uk/arcsits.htm (1 of 2)27/07/2004 17.42.11 arcsits inevitably they got labelled as neo prog with seventies influences from Genesis to PFM and Banco. Perhaps the neo prog tag fitted at the beginning of the band's career but it was polished neo prog, lacking the harshness of typical neo prog of the time.

  • Arlo Parks - Black Dog Episode 210
Song Exploder Arlo Parks - Black Dog Episode 210 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. Before this episode starts, I want to let you know that the song being discussed is about someone who is alive and well today, but was going through a period of depression and anxiety. Both the song and the interview allude to suicide, so please be careful before listening. If you’re thinking about suicide, or if you have a friend who is, or if you just need someone to talk to right now, you can get support by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or by texting HOME to 741-741, which is the Crisis Text Line. If you’re outside of the U.S., check out the list of international hotlines at suicide.org. I’ll link to all of this on the Song Exploder website and in the episode show notes. (“Black Dog” by Arlo Parks) Hrishikesh: Arlo Parks is a singer and songwriter from London. In January 2021, she released her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams. It hit number three on the UK charts, and she won this year’s BRIT award for Breakthrough Artist. Last year, NME called her song “Black Dog” the year’s “most devastating song.” In this episode, she breaks down “Black Dog,” which she made with producer Gianluca Buccellati. Arlo: But I call him Luca. Hrishikesh: Here’s Arlo Parks on Song Exploder.

  • MARILLION Sounds That Can't Be Made (Prog Heavy / Prog Metal / Prog Rock)
MARILLION Sounds that can't be made (Prog Heavy / Prog Metal / Prog Rock) Année de sortie : 2012 Nombre de pistes : 8 Durée : 74' Support : CD Provenance : Reçu du label Après les 20 titres (108 minutes) de Happiness Is The Road, déclinés en 2 parties (Essence et The Hard Shoulder), MARILLION signe 4 ans après un nouvel album studio, le 17ème, Sounds That Can't Be Made.

  • SHCPS Summer Reading 2011 to Prepare, All Junior Academy
SHCPS Summer Reading 2011 This spring, SHCPS staff, families and community members all pitched in to clear the land across the street from the school on Eastern Avenue. Over the summer, the work will continue (Contact Christopher Young at [email protected] to help out!) so, upon our return to school in August, we can proudly unveil our Community Garden! In the spirit of this event, all classes will partake in a series of garden related projects that span across all content areas. To prepare, all Junior Academy students should read Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. This beautiful book, which has won the Buckeye Children’s Book Award and has been named a “Best Book” by the Young Adults Library, School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly, tells the stories of twelve characters who come together through the founding of a neighborhood garden in Cleveland, IL. It is a “hymn to a sense of community.” Please be aware that some of the characters in the book explore some sensitive topics. Parents, if you are uncomfortable with any of the issues this book touches upon, please allow your child to choose an alternative book from the list below, or another book of substance that focuses on gardens or other environmental endeavors. Better yet, read the book alongside your child so that you can serve as a mature sounding board as your child ponders the messages of the story. Enjoy! Students in all other grades should choose at least three books from the bibliography below. Try out some of the projects listed in the activity books too! Have fun! An Annotated Bibliography of Children's Literature with Environmental Themes Adapted from a bibliography compiled by Nancy Andersen, Librarian OLCS, Erie, PA and Susan Miceli, Children's Services Manager, ECPL, Erie, PA Albert, Richard E.
