30p o. N 263 ‘For and about the people of Berkeley’ September 2017 HELP NEEDED Please could you spare a few hours to collect for the 2017 Poppy Appeal In 2017 the Poppy Appeal is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the First World War and in particular the Battle of Passchendaele and continues to support injured service personnel and bereaved families in their own homes and through six care homes. I am your local organiser and need several more people to undertake house-to-house collections in the Berkeley and the surrounding area. It would be wonderful if we could top the £4800 we raised last year. If you could spare a few hours at the beginning of November please contact Ray Chaney (telephone 01453 811545 or e-mail [email protected]). I said they would soon go to the Loughborough bell-foundry and return in August. We now have some great news, we are only a month behind that programme! The work to reinstall the bells should begin on Tuesday 12th September, with the bells, which have been retuned, returning later in the month. Considering the complexity of the job this is a good performance. The work on the tower has been more difficult than expected. It will probably take until late October to complete all the work in the tower. Firstly, the new frame base needs to be hauled up into the tower and fixed to the tower structure. When the mortar is dry, the frame components can be lifted and assembled, Then the bells and fittings can be hauled up and the bells hung. The ropes will then be fitted and the bells tested. We hope to restart normal ringing by the end of October, possibly earlier. Then the hard work really starts. As I said last time, what we still need is enough ringers for our ten bells. We aim to teach new ringers from scratch and perhaps have an intensive course during half term week, if the bells are ready. Anyone can learn, from ages 10-70. The only way to tell if you have an aptitude for it is to have a go! If you are interested, please have a word with the Vicar or Tim Soanes, the Tower Captain (811006). Steve Chandler—Chairman of the Appeal Committee Eco Collection Bin Berkeley Primary School have started their Eco Collections again! We would really appreciate any donations of arts and crafts supplies that you have. This could be old cards, wrapping paper, buttons, ribbons, beads, glitter, card, wool and so on. We have a green bin on the playground where you can put any donations; the gates are open in the morning until 9am and between 3pm and 4pm. If you need to drop off any donations, any other times please take them to the school office. Thank you very much!
