  • Glorious Narada Muni Hare Krishna. Please Accept My Humble
Glorious Narada Muni Date: 2002-07-08 Author: Kalacakra Krsna das Hare Krishna. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. What else we can get about Srila Narada Muni than that comes directly from the Lotus mouth of the Supreme Lord Sri Krsna ? The following (SB 10.10.25) is a verse spoken by the Lord Himself glorifying Srila Narada Muni, just after delivering the two sons of Kuvera who were cursed by the Deva-Rsi to stand as Arjuna trees. devarṣir me priyatamo yad imau dhanadātmajau tat tathā sādhayiṣyāmi yad gītaṁ tan mahātmanā Although these two young men are the sons of the very rich Kuvera and I have nothing to do with them, Devarsi Narada is My very dear and affectionate devotee, and therefore because he wanted Me to come face to face with them, I must do so for their deliverance. PURPORT Nalakuvara and Manigriva actually had nothing to do with devotional service or seeing the Supreme Personality of Godhead face to face, for this is not an ordinary opportunity. It is not that because one is very rich or learned or was born in an aristocratic family one will be able to see the Supreme Personality of Godhead face to face. This is impossible. But in this case, because Narada Muni desired that Nalakuvara and Manigriva see Vasudeva face to face, the Supreme Personality of Godhead wanted to fulfill the words of His very dear devotee Narada Muni. If one seeks the favor of a devotee instead of directly asking favors from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one is very easily successful.

Dear master, kindly enlighten us in transcendental knowledge, which may act as a torchlight by which we may cross the dark nescience of material existence. The great sage Maitreya continued: My dear Vidura, being thus petitioned by the Pracetas, the supreme devotee Narada, who is always absorbed in thoughts of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, began to reply. The great sage Narada said: When a living entity is born solely to engage in the devotional service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the supreme controller, his birth, all his fruitive activities, his life span, his mind and his words are all factually perfect. A civilized human being has three kinds of births. The first birth is by a pure father and mother, and this birth is called birth by semen. The next birth takes place when one is initiated by the spiritual master; this birth is called sāvitra. The third birth, called yājñika, takes place when one is given the opportunity to worship Lord Vishnu.

Out of the many songs that Narottama Das Thakurhas written, there is a collection of songs called ‘lalasamayi prarthana’. Following is the song from this collection: gauranga’ balite habe pulaka-sharira ‘hari hari’ balite nayane ba’he nira ara kabe nitai-candera karuna haibe samsara-vasana mora kabe tuccha ha’be vishaya chadiya kabe shuddha ha’be mana kabe hama heraba shri vrindavana rupa-raghunatha-pade haibe akuti kabe hama bujhaba se jugala piriti rupa-raghunatha-pade rahu mora asha prarthana karaye sada narottama dasa H H Lokanath swami Maharaja reads and comments upon the purport by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada: “This is a song sung by Narottama dasa Thakura, a great devotee and Acharya in the Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya, the disciplic succession coming down from Lord Caitanya. Narottama dasa Thakura has written many songs, which are recognized as authoritative by all the Vaishnavas. He has sung these songs in simple Bengali language, but the purport—the deep meaning of his songs—is very significant.” In this song, he says, “Gauraga balite habe pulaka sarira” – when does one attain the perfection of chanting? – as soon as he chants the name of Gauranga, who inaugurated the sankirtana movement and at once there is shivering in his body. Of course it is not shivering due to cold, unlike us. (laughter). There was no external bodily cause for his shivering but Narottama das was shivering from within because his soul was trembling in ecstasy.

Lidia Lewandowska-Nayar 1 NAROTTAMA DĀSA ṬṬṬHĀKURA ’’’S HERITAGE PRESERVED NOTE ON TRANSLITERATION The system of Sanskrit transliteration used herein is consistent with that accepted by International Congress of Orientalists at Geneva in 1984. Diacritics are included. INTRODUCTION My PhD research explores the role of the 16 th century poet Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura in the development of Bengali Vaiṣṇavism. Bengali Vaiṣṇavism is a religious movement that regards Kṛṣṇa in his incarnation as a cowherd boy as a supreme deity. Kṛṣṇa was born in Vṛndāvana in northwest India. There he spent his childhood and youth with his associates protecting village people, killing demons and playing amorously with milkmaids (sanskr. gopīs ). One of them, his beloved Rādhā, was gradually elevated to the position of Kṛṣṇa’s consort and goddess. Bengali Vaiṣṇavism is situated within the tradition of bhakti-yoga 2 – a spiritual path of love and devotion. Its basic holy scripture is Bhāgavata-purāṇa. Bengal Vaiṣṇavism can legitimately be called a movement because it influenced many other aspects of human life like philosophy, literature, art, architecture etc. Narottama was one of the greatest poet-saints of medieval Bengal. The exact dates of his birth and death have not been passed down. He lived at a time when the Vaiṣṇava movement began to flourish in the Northern India. He was instrumental in spreading the doctrine throughout Bengal. His poems transcended the contemporary 1 Lidia Lewandowska-Nayar is a first year PhD student at the Department of South Asia, School of Oriental and African Studies, London.
