  • The Stages of Bhakti. Odessa. 2004. Lecture 1. En. I Will Speak A
The Stages of Bhakti. Odessa. 2004. Lecture 1. En. I will speak a little about the opening verses of the tenth chapter of the “Bhagavad-gita”. And the reason why I decided to choose this topic ... they are numerous. One of them is that we often underestimate the “Bhagavad-gita”, the fact that we open it and think, “I know everything. Everything is clear – I am not this body, Krishna is God”. You can close the “Bhagavad-gita” and put it on the shelf. But actually, the greatest minds of the mankind have read and re-read the “Bhagavad-gita” over and over again. And we need to do the same, because in the process of such repetition our desire for Krishna becomes stronger and stronger. Krishna Himself explains that in the twelfth chapter of the “Bhagavad-gita” where He says that abhyasa, this method (abhyasa means repetition or practice), abhyasa, or the practice, the constant repetition is the method that will make our desire stronger. That is the very fan which we use to kindle the spark of our desire to go to Krishna. it is impossible to understand where from this spark has flown into our hearts. Only God knows where from! By causeless mercy, we have met the devotees, and the devotees, Srila Prabhupada's books, have instilled in our heart a spark of faith. Abhyasa or the constant practice of repetition allows that spark to ignite, allows us to turn it into a flame. That is one of the reasons why we should go back to the “Bhagavad-gita” again and again and try to read in it what we have not seen before, constantly comparing it with our own experience.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION ’ P”(Bha.t.tikāvya) is one of the boldest “B experiments in classical literature. In the formal genre of “great poem” (mahākāvya) it incorprates two of the most powerful Sanskrit traditions, the “Ramáyana” and Pánini’s grammar, and several other minor themes. In this one rich mix of science and art, Bhatti created both a po- etic retelling of the adventures of Rama and a compendium of examples of grammar, metrics, the Prakrit language and rhetoric. As literature, his composition stands comparison with the best of Sanskrit poetry, in particular cantos , and . “Bhatti’s Poem” provides a comprehensive exem- plification of Sanskrit grammar in use and a good introduc- tion to the science (śāstra) of poetics or rhetoric (alamk. āra, lit. ornament). It also gives a taster of the Prakrit language (a major component in every Sanskrit drama) in an easily ac- cessible form. Finally it tells the compelling story of Prince Rama in simple elegant Sanskrit: this is the “Ramáyana” faithfully retold. e learned Indian curriculum in late classical times had at its heart a system of grammatical study and linguistic analysis. e core text for this study was the notoriously difficult “Eight Books” (A.s.tādhyāyī) of Pánini, the sine qua non of learning composed in the fourth century , and arguably the most remarkable and indeed foundational text in the history of linguistics. Not only is the “Eight Books” a description of a language unmatched in totality for any language until the nineteenth century, but it is also pre- sented in the most compact form possible through the use xix of an elaborate and sophisticated metalanguage, again un- known anywhere else in linguistics before modern times.

  • The Style of Gita Govinda Recital and Odissi Music
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Invention ISSN (Online): 2319 – 7722, ISSN (Print): 2319 – 7714 www.ijhssi.org ||Volume 4 Issue 10 || October. 2015 || PP.40-43 The Style of Gita Govinda Recital and Odissi Music Dheeraj Kumar Mohapatra Guest Faculty, Odissi Vocal Department, Utkal University Of Culture, India ABSTRACT : In Gita Govinda, Sri Jayadeva has embellished the philosophy, metaphysics, ontology and mysticism in erotic words, melodious versifications, ardent love pictures and pornography delineating the clandestine love of Radha and Krishna. It points to union of natural beings with super nature. Jayadeva Radha is not only radiant, fascinating or angelic, she represents celestial beauty and her union with Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, unfolds supreme love and eternal delight. One does not require surveying the history, delving deep into texts and characteristic features of Odissi system to understand its classy style if he at least reads and listens to Gitagovinda of Sri Jayadeva. As this sacred piece of lyrical poem contains all the salient and distinguishing features of classical music, the reader or listener must appreciate the uniqueness and wholesomeness of Odissi as the third system of classical music in the domain of Indian music. Sri Jayadeva has not only originated a specific music tradition, systematic form and definite melodic pattern, raga-tala repertoires but also built a socio-cultural community. The purity, sanctity and characteristic features of Odissi music have been enriched refined and pervaded its horizon through Gitagovinda of Sri Jayadeva. KEYWORDS: JAYADEVA, GITA GOVINDA, ODISSI, MUSIC, CLASSICAL Introduction Music is an integral part of human life, which is created when the vibratory waves are brought into melodious audible notes in material form.

VYASA PUJA OFFERINGS 91ST Vyasa Puja of HDG Srila Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Maharaja This publication is dedicated to the most holy lotus feet of His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaja, who, out of his causeless mercy, has descended into this material world as the direct representative of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna to rescue the fallen souls. His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaja has devoted his entire life to the promulgation of the glories of Sri Krishna while implicitly following the instructions of his diksha and siksha gurus, His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaja and His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaja, respectively. He is recognized by all Gaudiya Vaishnavas as one of the greatest acharyas of this era. His praises are most deserved, as, along with many other things, he possesses a vast knowledge of shastra and its inner devotional meaning with an acute ability to communicate this knowledge effectively to all persons regardless of their backgrounds or predispositions. This efficacy of preaching is largely due to his sincere humility and warm, affectionate character, which transforms knowledge into feeling—an actual taste of the Transcendent. Therefore, while desiring nothing for himself, he has garnered the love and respect of all who meet him, especially of those who are making a serious effort to follow his superlative personal example and ideals. His Divine Grace’s active preaching activities have now drawn to a close and he has entered into internal lila, yet his presence and influence are undiminished externally and he continues to be a leader among men—a stalwart and imposing figure among the followers of the message of divine love of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Nitai-zine One Some reflections on Initiation (re-edited) Neal Delmonico (Nitai Das) June 13, 2005 [This is a corrected and edited version of the very first issue of Nitai-zine. My memory was imperfect when I first wrote this. After all many years had passed since the events described herein. As I thought more about those events I found they began to reappear with more detail. Hopefully, most of the misconceptions and misremem- berings have been corrected in this version. I have also tried to pin down the events of Sarasvat¯ı’s great admission before Pandit R¯amakr.s.n. a D¯asB¯ab¯athat he had not actu- ally received initiation from Gauraki´soraD¯asB¯ab¯ato a more specific time and location. Those details have been added to this version of the account. — Nitai Das] Recently, among the many other projects I have started and not finished, I was working on Visvan´ atha¯ Cakravartin’s Kr.s.n. a-bh¯avan¯amr.ta, a delightful poem embodying the r¯ag¯anuga-bhakti practice of smaran. a or visualization. The very first verse of the text contains the word parampar¯a, which, among other things, may be translated disciplic succession. The verse reads like this in my translation: I surrender to the rain-cloud Kr.s.n. a Caitanya, who instantly de- stroys the darkness of the world and refreshes the whole world through uninterrupted succession of showers of his beauty like the beauty of millions of gods of love.1 It is a nice image. Caitanya is like a rain cloud pouring down his beauty like rain on a dusty, thirsty world.

  • Persistency Leads to Consistency Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis
Persistency Leads to Consistency Date: 2012-05-27 Author: Sudarshana devi dasi Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev. Few days ago a senior devotee told a very instructive point that everyday we should persistently pray to Lord sincerely, "Please use me in Your service." Then we will be able to serve Him consistently. When we are alloted some service, by senior devotees or the spiritual master, initially we will be very enthusiastic in doing the service and will be meticulous in doing the service. But after a period of time, being subjected to modes, if we become callous, then we take even the service also for granted and start thinking, "Anyways 'I' will have to do this service." When we foolishly think that, 'we are the doers', then immediately we fall down and lose the opportunity to serve. Whether we are doing arati for the Lord, speaking His glories, cooking for Him or engaged in any service for Him, it is simply because of His causeless mercy. The moment He decides to withdraw His mercy, we will not be able to even lift or move our hands. We must always remember that Supreme Lord is svayambhuvam, self-satisfied. He is not in need of any of our service. In Brahma Samhita, while glorifying the Supreme Lord, Lord Brahma says, 'lakṣmī-sahasra-śata-sambhrama- sevyamānaṁ' - "He is always served with great reverence and affection by hundreds of thousands of lakshmis or gopis in the spiritual world." Not knowing His greatness, we sometimes crib and complain while doing service.

Altogether these independent regions came under one administrative control which was known as Utkala and subsequently Orissa. The name of Utkala has been mentioned in Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranas. The existence of Utkala as a kingdom is found in Kalidas's Raghuvamsa. It is stated that king Raghu after having crossed the river Kapisa reached the Utkala country and finally went to Kalinga. The earliest epigraphic evidence to Utakaladesa is found from the Midnapur plate of Somdatta which includes Dandabhukti within its jurisdiction1. The plates record that while Sasanka was ruling the earth, his feudatory Maharaja Somadatta was governing the province of Dandabhukti adjoining the Utkala-desa. The Kelga plate 8 indicate s that Udyotakesari's son and successors of Yayati ruled about the 3rd quarter of eleventh century, made over Kosala to prince named Abhimanyu and was himself ruling over Utkala After the down-fall of the Matharas in Kalinga, the Gangas held the reines of administration in or about 626-7 A, D. They ruled for a long period of about five hundred years, when, at last, they extended their power as far as the Gafiga by sujugating Utkala in or about 1112 A.

I begin by situating my work in current scholarship on Classical Sanskrit women poets which discusses women’s works collectively and sees women’s work as writing with alternative literary aesthetics. Through a close reading of two women poets (c. 400 CE-900 CE) who are often linked, I will show how these women were both writing for a courtly, educated audience and argue that they have different authorial voices. In my analysis, I pay close attention to subjectivity and style, employing the frameworks of Sanskrit aesthetic theory and Classical Sanskrit literary conventions in my close readings.
