By his mercy divine loving devotion is revealed and ignorance is destroyed. The vedic scriptures sing of his character. (4) sri guru karuna-sindhu, adhama janara bandhu, lokanatha lokera jivana ha ha prabhu koro doya, dehomore pada-chaya, ebe jasa ghusuka tribhuvana Spiritual Master is the ocean of mercy, friend of the fallen soul, the life and soul of everyone. Oh master, be merciful unto me and give me the shade of your lotus feet. May your glories spread throughout the three worlds. Shri Shri Brahma Madhva Gaudiya Guru-Parampara The impressions of the world and the matter round us are registered upon our senses of perception which thus become the recipients of the consciousness of their presence and the resultant pain and pleasure from the experience. Sound for example is discovered by our sense of hearing and it gives us pleasure or pain according as it is wedding song or a funeral dirge. Unlike the sound in this material world is the Sound beyond its three dimensions. That Sound is not enjoyed by our senses, but on the other hand It is fully equipped Itself with all the organs and senses - of course supermundane -with which It can enjoy us, our senses, our material world and in fact everything, where It chooses to resound. The transcendental Sound is thus hearing us and not we the Sound. That Sound is identical with the Name of God, and the Name with God. Hence it is that the transmission of the Sound can be only by the Sound Itself that is to say by the Divinity in one form or another. The Sound revealed itself to Brahma and through him to Narada, and thus from one to another it has transmitted itself in unbroken and uninterrupted succession from Master to the disciple down to the present day. This is the living Revelation of God. Therefore, it is that rightly and justly a Vaishnava insists that a personal Master - Guru alone can reveal to us the Sound, the Name, the Deity. It thus becomes a matter of deep interest to him to contemplate not only with pride and glory but with humble devotion and love upon the long uninterrupted line of his Masters and Master's Masters who were illumined and absorbed by the radiant Name of the Divinity. Of that unbroken chain we give below the names of a few who are better known to the vulgar world because of their written works, historical deeds, or popular appreciation. Exact dates have not come down to us as the Vaishnava is always more of a devotee than an accurate historian, specially because to him each individual Master and His life are ever present and eternal. And thus the spread of this knowledge is continuing in the chain of disciplic succession till this time as is authentically depicted by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura in his song Guru-Parampara :- (1) krsna hoite catur-mukha, hoy krsna-sevonmukha, brahma hoite naradera mati narada hoite vyasa, madhwa kohe vyasa-dasa, purnaprajna padmanabhia gati In the beginning of creation, the science of devotional service was revealed by Sri Krishna to four-faced Brahma who in turn taught it to Narada. The great sage Krishna Dvaipayan Vyasa, was empowered to compile Vedic literatures, became the disciple of Devarshi Narada. Vyasa taught it to his servant Madhvacharya, who is also known as Purnaprajna tirtha and who is the sole refuge for his disciple Padmanabha Tirtha. (2) nrhari madhava-bamse, aksobhya paramahamse, sisya boli' angikara kore aksobhyera sisya jaya- tirtha name paricaya, tara dasye jnanasindhu tore From Padmanabha Tirth it passed to Nruhari and Madhava Tirtha whose principal disciple was great paramhansa Aksobhya Tirtha. He, in turn, accepted as his disciple Jayatirtha who passed his service to Jnanasindhu. (3) taha hoite dayanidhi, tara dasa vidyanidhi, rajendra hoilo taha ha'te tahara kinkora jaya- dharma name paricaya, parampara jano bhalo mate After Jnanasindhu was Dayanidhi whose disciple was Vidyanidhi. His disciple was Rajendra Tirtha whose principal disciple was Jayadharma also known as Vijayadhvaja Tirtha. In this way you should properly understand this Guru-parampara. (4) jayadharma-dasye khyati, sri purusottama-jati, ta ha'te brahmanya-tirtha suri vyasatirtha tara dasa, laksmipati vyasa-dasa, taha ha'te madhavendra puri The great sannyasi Purusottama Tirtha was a renowned disciple of Jayadharma who recieved this knowledge in the service of his guru. From Purusottama, the line descended to the powerful Brahmanya Tirtha. His servant was the great Vyasatirtha. Vyasatirtha's servant was Laksmipati Tirth, whose disciple was Madhabendra Puri. (5) madhavendra puri-bara, sisya-bara sri-iswara, nityananda, sri-adwaita vibhu iswara-purike dhanya, korilen sri-caitanya, jagad-guru gaura mahaprabhu Sri Madhabendra Puri, the best of Sannyasis, whose favourite disciple was Iswara Puri. Two of his other disciples were the Avatars i.e. Sri Nityanand Prabhu and Sri Advaita Acharya. Jagadguru Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu made Iswara Puri greatly fortunate by accepting him as Diksa Guru. (6) mahaprabhu sri-caitanya, radha-krsna nahe anya, rupanuga janera jivana viswambhara priyankara, sri-swarupa damodara, sri-goswami rupa-sanatana Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is non-different from Sri Sri Radha and Krishna and is the very life of Rupanuga Vaishnavas who follow Sri Rupa Goswami. Sri Swarup Damodar Goswami, Sri Rupa and Sri Sanatan Goswami were the most intimate servants of Sri Chaitanya who was also known as Visvambhara. (7) rupa-priya mahajana, jiva, raghunatha hana, tara priya kavi krsnadasa krsnadasa-priya-bara, narottama seva-para, jara pada viswanatha-asa The great saintly personalities like Sri Jiva Goswami and Sri Ragunath dasa Goswami were very dear to Rupa Goswami.
