Protein ingredients are one of the most expensive inputs even though they are not included in large quantities as compared to cereals. Monogastric animal industries are faced with a major problem of limited protein sources, moreover, the competition for plant materials is expected to further increase feed prices. Therefore, to tackle this problem, interventions are required to find alternative and cost-effective protein sources. One identified crop that meets these requirements is amaranth. Studies have shown the potential and contribution that amaranth has as an alternative ingredient in diets for monogastric animals. Therefore, the main purpose of this review is to provide a detailed understanding of the potential use of amaranth as feed for monogastric animals, and further indicate processing techniques are suitable to improve the utilization of grain amaranth and leaves. -

Gorsky State Agrarian University Abstract- Amaranth is a multifunctional culture that surpasses many others by the amount of high-grade protein, vitamins, macro- and microelements from a unit of sown area. Amaranth grains (mature seeds) contain 14-18% of protein, up to 8% of oil, about 7% of N-free extractives and up to 4% of ash. It is used as dietary cereal, for the production of baby food, medical products, in the bakery and confectionery industries, as well as in feed production. Amaranth protein in its amino-acid composition approaches the ideal protein. Amaranth protein concentrates are not inferior to soy ones. Leaves of amaranth of vegetable cultivars are used for preparing salads, soups, fried, baked, boiled and dried food products. 1. ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND 1.1. Establishment / Organizational Aspiration: Love In Action Ethiopia/LIA-E/ is an indigenous, not-for-profit, non-governmental charitable organization established and registered in 2001 with the ministry of Justice and re-registered on October 30, 2009 with Charities and Societies Agency of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia as an Ethiopian Residents Charity. Love In Action Ethiopia was established with a view to serving the poorest, underserved, most vulnerable, most at risk, and marginalized segments of the population; including children, youth and women. Over the years, LIAE has grown to serve its target beneficiaries through participatory development programs focusing on creating access to quality educations for children and adults; HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support; and capacity development. All through its periods of struggles, LIAE has grown beyond simply raising awareness and developing skills into rendering more sustainable and meaningful solutions for the multifaceted socio-economic problems of the community and in turn start to save life of the generation. 1.2. In this study, agronomic traits, oil content, fatty acid composition, quality indices, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic compounds were studied on eight A. cruentus accessions grown in Southern Italy. Data showed a valuable seed yield (0.27 kg/m2, on average) comparable to the main cereals used for animal feeding, a higher oil content compared to that of conventional cereals such as maize with a fatty acid profile composed approximately for the 60% of unsaturated fatty acids, and a valuable antioxidant potential and phenolic compounds that are far superior to corn and wheat. -

The main aim of the study was to assess land use land cover change detection (LULCC) from 1990 to 2016 in case of Gibe Sheleko National Park (GSNP), Southwestern Ethiopia. Methodology / approach. Multi-temporal Landsat images and topographic map were acquired in 2016. Field observation using GPS was carried out to generate the ground truth points for image classification and accuracy assessment from December 2016 to June 2017. A total 200 GPS points were purposively collected. The data were analysis by using ERDAS IMGINE 2010 and ArcGIS 10.3.1 software. Supervised classification was carried out to identify the overall land use land cover class. Results. Forest land was rapidly declined with average of 478.5 ha/year for the last 27 years. This revealed that over 66.8 % of forest was diminished from 1990 to 2016 due to anthropogenic factors in the study area. Bush & shrub land was upraised from 12600 ha (31.5 %) to 20600 ha (51.5 %) from 1990 to 2016. Grazing land and bare land was also showed an increment of 3500 ha and 2240 ha with average increment of 134.6 ha/year and 86.5 ha/year respectively from 1990 to 2016. This indicated as most forest land was changed in to bush & shrub land due to human induced factors. Hence, it brings negative effects on the wildlife conservation and socio-economic development. -

Detailed questions arising around the name Amaranthus gracilis Duilio Iamonico Laboratory of Phytogeography and Applied Geobotany, Department PDTA, Section Environment and Landscape, Sapienza University of Rome, Postal Code 00196 Rome, Italy ABSTRACT: The present article represents the fourth contribution of a series whose final aim is to gain an understanding of the complicated nomenclature of the genus Amaranthus. The investigation deals with the need to establish the identity of Amaranthus gracilis and related names. On the basis of extensive analysis of the literature, examination of herbarium specimens and field surveys, light has been thrown on a number of complex nomenclatural questions. Amaranthus gracilis is published as a nomen novum for Chenopodium caudatum. According to a recent paper C. caudatum cannot be considered either a member of Chenopodiaceae or an Amaranthus species and is proposed as a nomen rejectendum. Desfontaines’ misinterpretation has never been discussed in depth, and most authors associated A. gracilis with A. viridis. Analysis of the literature has revealed several misapplications. The combinations Euxolus caudatus and Albersia caudata are pro parte synonyms of A. viridis, as are Moquin’s new Euxolus caudatus var. gracilis (lectotype here designated, specimen deposited at P) and the combination Euxolus caudatus var. maximus. The basionym Amaranthus maximus (lectotype here designated, specimen at BM) is a heterotypic synonym of A. caudatus. On the basis of the results obtained, it can be concluded that Amaranthus gracilis has the same type as Ch. caudatum and, if the proposed rejection of this latter name is accepted, then Desfontaines’ name should be rejected too, according to Art. -

SITUATION ANALYSIS OF CHILDREN AND WOMEN: Southern Nations, Nationalities,and People SITUATION ANALYSIS OF CHILDREN AND WOMEN: Southern Nations, Nationalities,and People This briefing note covers several issues related to child well-being in Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR). It builds on existing research and the inputs of UNICEF Ethiopia sections and partners.1 It follows the structure of the Template Outline for Regional Situation Analyses. 1Most of the data included in this briefing note comes from the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS), Household Consumption and Expenditure Survey (HCE), Education Statistics Annual Abstract (ESAA) and Welfare Monitoring Survey (WMS) so that a valid comparison can be made with the other regions of Ethiopia. SITUATION ANALYSIS OF CHILDREN AND WOMEN: SOUTHERN NATIONS, NATIONALITIES,AND PEOPLE 4 1 THE DEVELOPMENT CONTEXT SNNPR is the third largest region in Ethiopia in terms of population, and is located in the south west of the country. Its estimated population is approximately 20 million people, which makes up 20 per cent of the Ethiopian population.2 The region is one of the most populous parts of Ethiopia, with a density of approximately 151 people per square kilometre.
