Subthemes: Culture; Gender roles and stereotypes; Historical events The remoteness of Australia and its formidable landscape and harsh climate made this alien land an ideal choice as a penal settlement in the early 19th century. While the prospect of escape may initially have seemed inconceivable, the desire for freedom proved too strong for the many convicts who attempted to flee into the bush. Early escapees were misguided by the belief that China was only a couple of hundred kilometres to the north. Later, other convicts tried to escape by sea, heading across the Pacific Ocean. In this clip, Charles meets Liam, an escaped convict who is attempting to travel over the Blue Mountains to the west. Discover Ask students to research the reasons why Australia was selected as the site of a British penal colony. They should also find out who was sent to the colony and where the convicts were first incarcerated. Refer to the My Place for Teachers, Decade timeline – 1800s for an overview. Students should write an account of the founding of the penal settlement in New South Wales. As a class, discuss the difficulties convicts faced when escaping from an early Australian gaol. Examine the reasons they escaped and the punishments inflicted when they were captured. List these reasons and punishments on the board or interactive whiteboard. Abstract Irish intercultural cinema looks at the development of a cinematic genre which focuses on issues of Irish migrancy but is produced outside of Ireland. This paper has as its focus the cultural landscape of Irish-Australia. The essay uses methodologies of ethnographic and documentary theory plus textual analysis of film and written texts to establish a throughline of Irish intercultural film. The essay begins by contextualising the place of the Irish diaspora within the creation of Irish identity globally. The discussion around migrancy is widened to consider the place of memory and intergenerational tensions within not just the Irish migrant population, but also within the diverse cultures which comprise the contemporary Australian landscape. The historical development of intercultural cinema is then explored internationally within a context of colonial, gender and class struggles in the 1970s and1980s. The term intercultural cinema has its origins in the Third Cinema of Argentinians Solanas and Getino in the 1970s and covers those films which deal with issues involving two countries or cultures. The term was refined by Laura Marks in 2000 and further developed by Hamid Naficy in 2001 in his discussion of accented cinema which narrows its definition to include the politics of production. The paper then traces the development of Irish intercultural cinema from its beginnings in England in the 1970s with Thaddeus O'Sullivan through to Nicola Bruce and others including Enda Murray in the present day.

This was the character reference Surgeon Peter Cosgreave conferred on Harriet Neat as she prepared to disembark from the convict ship Friendship in January 1818.1 Her journey was not yet over, as she was one of those Friendship women who was removed to the Duke of Wellington for transhipment to Van Diemen’s Land.2 As Harriott Neat, on 13 January 1817 she had appeared before the Bristol Assizes charged with having stolen five straw bonnets to the value of 25 shillings.3 Found guilty as charged, she was sentenced to seven years transportation.4 The records indicate that she was 20 years old when she arrived at Hobart Town.5 Nothing has been found to confirm her actual birth or her parentage, but there is a record of a Harriet Neat, born 1 September 1802, in Faringdon, Berkshire, to Richard Neat and his wife Sarah (née Newman). But unless and until this can be verified as relating to ‘our’ Harriet, it is merely speculative.6 Her first name and surname were something of a headache for the record keepers, who referred to her variously as Harriet, Harriett, Harriete, Harriott and Neat, Neal, Neale.

They were thick with dust, neatly bound and tied with a black ribbon. I mused, ‗perhaps this is it!' Excitement mounted as we turned to Folio 1 of the faded, Victorian handwritten manuscript. Discovered was the original 1870 narrative/manuscript of bushranger Martin Cash as produced by himself and scribe/co-author, James Lester Burke. The State Archives personnel assisted in reproducing the 550 pages. They were wonderfully helpful. I wish I could remember all their names. Tony Marshall‘s help stands out. A study of the original manuscript and a careful perusal of the many editions of the Cash adventure tale alerted me that the Cash/Burke narrative/manuscript had not been fully examined before, as the twelve 1880-1981 editions of Martin Cash, His Adventures…had omitted 62,501 words which had not been published after the 1870 edition. My twenty years of study is here presented and, certainly, it would not have happened without the help of many. Geoff Stillwell (deceased) pointed me in the direction of the possible resting place of the manuscript. The most important person to help in this production was Joan.

    PROJECT www.j aconline.com.au Convict stats and facts The original migrants to Australia were mainly unwilling to come here. They were mostly convicts, convicted of crimes in Britain and sentenced to transportation to a penal colony in a land they had probably never heard of. Some interesting statistics • Some 150 000 convicts were transported to Australia, most of whom could not read or write and were very poor. • The majority of crimes for which they were convicted related to theft — often of food. • Some 16 per cent of convicts were women. Some brought their children with them; other children were transported in their own right as punishment. Other convicts were elderly — in their 70s and 80s. • On average, convicts were aged about 26. Until the late 1820s, sentences ranged from a usual minimum of seven years up to life. Complete the following research activity to find out more about this fascinating part of our nation's history. Stancombe "Glendessary", Western Junction EXPLORATION AND PASTORAL The First Overland Journey The first approach to this region was made by Lieut. Laycock in 1807 when, with several men, he ascended the Lake River to Wood's Lake and proceeded to the Derwent along the Clyde. Thomas Toombs, a ticket-of-leaver informed Calder the surveyor, years after the event, that he had seen the Great Lake in 1815. No doubt, many such men, attracted to the wild, lonely plateau came hunting for the more elusive creatures, thought to be living there. Penetration from the South-East John Beamont the Naval Officer and Robert Jones a settler on the Jordan, made an expedition to the Great Lake in 1817 at the instance of the new govenor, Sorell, anxious to find new areas of pasture land beyond the settled districts. Beamont first set out from Cross Marsh (Melton Mowbray) and going through Black Brush, climbed the hills to the Clyde. Following the Blackburn Rivulet, they came to the Lagoon of Islands where they found cider gums, some of them destroyed by the natives endeavouring to extract the sweet liquid (if kept for a time the juice ferments in a most satisfactory manner). On the fourth day, Beamont forded the Shannon and proceeded seven miles, but on the following day they could not break camp, as snow and hail driving in from the south prevented them. On the sixth day they reached Swan Bay on the Great Lake, crossing the Ouse on the way.

The history of discovery of coal in Tasmania. the history of geological work on the coal and the history and methods of exploitation of the coal have been influenced by three main factors: (I) population spread and density, (2) geology, including quality, of coal and (3) economic conditions. The pattern of discovery showed the effects of population growth and the spread of settlement in the island and, particularly in the early days of the colony, the types of discoverers reflected important groups in the population. Study of the coal was, for the greater part of last century, carried out by visiting naturalists, amateurs (some of them gifted) or overseas experts. Even when this situation changed and the work was done by resident geologists, the study usually depended on concepts and practices developed elsewhere. The derivative nature of this work is a reflection of the generally poor quality of known coals and, by and large, low known coal reserves. The history of mining reflects the geology of the coal deposits, changes in the means and availability of transport and, in general, economic conditions.
