Introduction “His family details are sketchy...”1 For a century and a half, many wrongs have been written about William Schaw Lindsay and this paper will attempt to clarify how and why he has been misrepresented. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography claims that his family details are sketchy yet Lindsay was proud of his lowly origins and never concealed them. He was born during a gale on 19 December 1815 at the manse of his uncle, the Reverend William Schaw, in the county town of Ayr in South-West Scotland.2 Tragically, Lindsay’s father died four years later, followed by the death of his mother in 1825 and Lindsay wrote “From that moment I felt I was a child of poverty whose lot was to earn my bread by the sweat of my brow.’” 3 The childless minister and his wife willingly took Lindsay into the manse and sent him to Ayr Academy in the hope that he would become a Free Church minister like himself. -

Collectively known as the Australian Convict Sites these places tell the story of the colonisation of Australia and the building of a nation. Fremantle Prison is Western Australia’s most important historical site. As a World Heritage Site, Fremantle Prison is recognised as having the same level of cultural significance as other iconic sites such as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, or the Historic Centre of Rome. For 136 years between 1855 and 1991 Fremantle Prison was continuously occupied by prisoners. Convicts built the Prison between 1851 and 1859. Initially called the Convict Establishment, Fremantle Prison held male prisoners of the British Government transported to Western Australia. After 1886 Fremantle Prison became the colony’s main place of incarceration for men, women and juveniles. Fremantle Prison itself was finally decommissioned in November 1991 when its male prisoners were transferred to the new maximum security prison at Casuarina. Fremantle Prison was a brutal place of violent punishments such as floggings and hangings. -

4 Shipwrecks: Images and Perceptions of Nineteenth Century Maritime Disasters Mark Staniforth In the nineteenth century the long sea voyage across thousands of miles of open ocean to Australia was a step into the unknown. International migration at this time usually involved travel by sea, as it had in previous centuries. Ships were the primary long distance transportation method and the movement of passengers was one of their most important functions. It has been estimated that more than 1.6 million immigrants travelled to Australia by ship between 1788 and 1900, nearly half of these people were assisted immigrants of one type or another and they came primarily from Great Britain with smaller numbers from Europe (Barrie 1989:121). In the popular imagination the ocean represented hazard and uncertainty - an alien environment in which the possibility of shipwreck loomed large. Passengers felt themselves to be at the mercy of the elements and being directly exposed to the extremes of the weather in a moving structure was a new and disconcerting experience. This fear of shipwreck can be seen in a letter from P. Harnett to his brother from Cape Town in 1832 who writes that: 'you and the family must have been frequently tormented by anxious hopes and fears of my safety or probably have heard that the vessel was wrecked and as a matter of course that I was lost' (Harnett 1832). In most respects shipwrecks, like other tragedies involving transportation, are civil or 'man made' disasters yet they also exhibit some of the 45 46 Disasters: Images and Contexts characteristics of natural disasters.l These include evoking in the victims feelings of powerlessness in the face of overwhelming natural forces and a timeframe which sometimes extends over a period of hours or even days. -
