Cinderella - an Introduction Cinderella - An Introduction PLAY THE VIDEO BEFORE MOVING ON!! The Grimm Brothers Who were the Grimm Brothers? ● The Grimm Brothers, Jacob and Ludwig, were brothers from Germany who lived during the 1800s. ● They are famous for their tellings of the fairytales that are told around the world to this day. ● Their stories have been changed and adapted countless times throughout history. ● Though there have been other writers famous for their fairytales, the Grimm Brothers may be the most famous. PLAY THE VIDEO BEFORE MOVING ON!! Cinderella-The Many Versions Cinderella is quite possibly one of the most retold fairytales of all time. There have been numerous movies and countless written adaptations of this story. With all the different versions, there are very few “modern” ones that include some of the darker and grittier parts of the original fairytale told by the Brothers Grimm. PLAY THE VIDEO BEFORE MOVING ON!! Some of the Many Versions of Cinderella There are some versions that include magic and fairy godmothers, and stick somewhat closely to the original Grimm Brothers’ story. *Note: You don’t have to watch all these trailers, but I strongly encourage you to check them out. You might find a movie you’d love to watch! Disney’s 1950 Cinderella Ella Enchanted Into the Woods Disney’s 2015 Cinderella PLAY THE VIDEO BEFORE MOVING ON!! More of the Many Versions of Cinderella Then there are some versions that remove the magic and take the basics of the story, and make it their own. *Note: You don’t have to watch all these trailers, but I strongly encourage you to check them out. You might find a movie you’d love to watch! Ever After A Cinderella Story Another Cinderella Story PLAY THE VIDEO BEFORE MOVING ON!! No matter which version it is that you read or watch, they all tell a similar story; that of a girl who is mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, and dreams of a day when her life will change. Now, complete the assignment titled “Cinderella Pre-Reading”. Tomorrow, we will read the original story. I will let you know, the Grimm Brothers’ version is not nearly as happy and princessy as what you’d find in a Disney movie. .

  • Romero Barker Ella 5
From Book to Film: Ella Enchanted by Macario Ben Romero and Patricia Barker Fairy tales occupy a unique position in the literary canon. Although based on literary traditions, they have become an increasingly visual form in American culture due in large part to the works and films of Walt Disney which simplified and familiarized story lines in favor of technical artistry to “wow” the audience and which also sacrificed artistry for invention, tradition for innovation, and imagination for distraction (Zipes, “Towards” 7-8). For the most part, fairy tales of any culture are indicative of the morals and traditions of that culture: “fairy tales provide a unique window into our most central concerns, our sense of social and cultural identity, who we think we are (or should be) – and how we change” (Orenstein 8). Zipes clearly reaffirms this argument when discussing the French origins of the literary fairy tale: “the genre of the literary fairy tale was institutionalized as an aesthetic and social means through which questions and issues of civilite , proper behavior and demeanor in all types of situations, were mapped out as narrative strategies for literary socialization (Zipes, “Breaking” 23). For women, this socialization process can be insidious because as Vera Sonja Maass writes, “in their symbolic forms, fairy tales reinforce self-defeating social and psychological behavior patterns in women’s daily lives” (vii). Later, she writes that the older oral fairy tales descended from matriarchal societies which celebrated womanhood “had been transformed into a verbal version bearing a literate code that prescribed the domestic requirements in bourgeois Christian society necessary for a young woman to be acceptable for marriage: self-sacrifice, diligence, hard work, silence, humility, and patience” (5).

  • Cinderella's Status As a Gentleman's Daughter Makes Her More Acceptable As a Future King's Consort
    1. Gentleman: Cinderella's status as a gentleman's daughter makes her more acceptable as a future king's consort. It also places her above the status of peasant. Cinderella is not usually a rags-to-riches tale, but a riches-to-rags-to-riches tale. 2. Mother: With over 340 versions of Cinderella, many variations of the story exist. Although this Perrault version does not mention Cinderella's mother beyond this reference, many versions have the dead mother providing assistance to her daughter in either animal form or through magical objects which appear from a tree on the mother's grave (the Grimms' version uses the tree). 3. Stepmother: The stepmother is a common villain in fairy tales. The stepmother has been a villain since the earliest known versions of the Cinderella tale. The competition between the two women for the husband/father's affection provides a logical reason for the stepmother's cruelty. 4. Meanest work of the house: The meanest work would be the filthiest, harshest and most demeaning work in the household, such as scrubbing floors and emptying chamber pots. 5. Garret: A garret is a room directly under the roof, or in other words, an attic. 6. Straw bed: Until this century, straw beds were a common type of bedding for all but the supremely rich who could afford goose beds or other more expensive mattresses. Straw was used as the stuffing for the mattress. 7. Floors all inlaid: Inlaid floors are parquet floors and were common in more elegant homes in previous centuries. 8.
