100% Natural Raw Kokum butter

The easiest and the most popular way of extracting this oil is by refining the Kokum kernels using chemical processes. Up to 44% Butter can be extracted from kernels using chemical solvents making it cheaper for industrial use (bath & beauty industry. when such chemically processed Kokum butter is used in cosmetics, soaps and even edibles, the end product isn’t 100% natural either!

100% Natural Raw Kokum butter is a white or creamish yellow or at times even a slightly grey tint or brown colored. Which is extracted by traditional rural/cottage industry sized oil mills. Kokum seeds are gathered from natural forest habitats. These seeds are decorticated. The final product is obtained by crushing the kernels in oil expeller, boiling the pulp in water and skimming off the fat from the top or churning the crushed pulp with water. The idea here is to physically separate oil from water as these two liquids are immiscible. It’s a time consuming process and the yield in this case is only about 25% of raw Kokum butter. Therefore the production cost of raw Kokum butter remains high.

Collection, Cleaning & Drying of Kokum Seeds Kokum seeds are gathered from various wild sources! Kokum seeds are cleaned in order to remove dust, dirt and foreign matter. These seeds are dried in the sun to remove excess moisture. Dry seeds are then hulled to expose kernels and shells. These go through a process of winnowing to retain kernels where as seed shells are discarded. Clean Kokum kernels are going to be boiled/ heated and sent to the oil expeller to obtain Kokum oil.

Crude Kokum oil (precursor of Kokum butter) Crude Kokum oil is heated to remove traces of moisture by heating/ boiling the oil. This hot Kokum oil is then physically filtered twice to remove scum, floating debris and heavier impurities.

Pure oil After filtration this pure oil going to be transfer in 20 kg cube sized containers to become cool and solidify. These cubes then pack in corrugated boxes. Shakambhari Agro 2014

3. Shelf life*: To prolong shelf life up to 24 months and prevent melting, kokum butter should be stored in a cool place away from moisture & direct sunlight. All raw kokum butter will gradually develop a dry and cracked appearance. 4.
