Reviews:

“We really enjoyed your book and are extremely impressed with the amount of coverage!” “You have probably written more about Periscope than we have!” - @Periscopetv

“This is the Periscope Bible! There's a lot of insider info in here for brands who want a quick- start Periscope guide … Great job!” - @AlexPettitt, Periscope and tech-trainer

“I got it and it fired up my interest in Periscope! Great job.” - Michael Rosenblum @Rosenblumtv, ‘Father of Videojournalism’ and founder of NYTimes TV

“What a great ebook you have written! I have read it and it’s well presented with excellent content.” – @MarkShaw, Periscoper and social media trainer

“You’re fantastic! Already out with a guide for Periscopers! Impressive!” - @PeriscopItaly

“That’s quite a piece of work!” – Marc Settle, BBC social-media trainer

“This book contains a great deal of good information about the app itself. From the initial install and setup to creation of your first show, this book is a solid read. There is also a whole lot of basic advice about video production, show ideas, headline writing (your show title) and other subjects. If you are the type that learns through reading, then this is a great resource to a beginner off the side-lines and into the game of live-streaming video.” – Chris Doelle, Fresh Media, Texas.

“Why would you read a book about Periscope? I mean, the app is really easy to use. I’m from media, I was raised in a family that were producers, directors and I work on TV, so why would I buy this? But … it’s really easy and fun to read. The first part of the book tells you where the trend of marketing is going and explains why Periscope is a great marketing tool. It gives you an insight of many studies which I found amazingly fantastic. The second part takes you through how to use Periscope very very well. It gives you an insight of things that you think you know about but probably don’t! Things like: How to use search, how to build a better profile, how to get more people to join you, and the basics of production for shows, how to use ideas for your business and how to use private Periscope and why, how to engage with workers in your field. And it gives you a Periscope plan for all your ideas. It gives ideas how to make money out of Periscope and basically opens up your mind for your creativity and the way you manage your business. And you don’t need to be selling anything to use it, for example you can be a teacher and it gives ways to better engage with your students. I think it could really help you out and give you many ideas. I recommend you to buy it!” - @JamieSassonTV (in a review on Periscope)

“The book, is an invaluable resource to get ahead the learning curve. Instantly you can become a periscope expert after just one reading. I love this old-school book on this new- world social app periscope. I read the digital version and enjoyed the simple direct design. It reminded me of the Dummy book series that cropped up on all type of subjects. The magic of this book is that you can read it in one sitting or keep it in your library as a reference. The book is broken down into four sections and is a step by step approach in using periscope. There are snapshot, reference to other periscope users, and bubble section that quote the author, Perry. Which is take off on “periscope” in the name “Perry”. The Perry bubbles have cool tips. There are also cool acronym devices that reference different approaches. I really thought this book was on point and it is a work in progress. I read the first version but sure the contents will evolve as we learn more about periscope. There are also lots of links and interactive exercises. I’ve personally had over 300 scopes and after reading this book am excited to apply some ideas and discover the potential for this app to help my business and others. Go ahead and join this social media revolution and download the Periscope app and check out Up Your Periscope! Perry states early on, “80% of success is just showing up” so show up and show off. Start your periscope adventure today. Join the wave of the future today and buy this book. You won’t regret it.” - @abcvision Dr. Wilson Triviño http://bit.ly/UYP_Trevino

“If you figure out how to properly use the platform, you will be rewarded with viewers.”

Foreword

Thanks so much for buying this handbook. It is written out of a passion for the hottest social media connection tool of the moment.

We have been great fans of Periscope from pretty much as soon as it was launched (on March 26th 20151). And even though this book is not linked with the developers at all, we have pulled together awesome examples from around the world to help spread the word to help you use Periscope better … and become more successful. And realise the scope of Periscope.

I’m not linked with @PeriscopeCo but am an enthusiastic fan: I’ve got qualifications in PR, sales and marketing and have worked in broadcast media for 25 years so know tons about video, audio, live and recorded production techniques, presentation, journalism and social media… so this app is a great cross-over platform.

And it’s an honour to now share my insight with you.

Before we get started, a few quick points:

When I say ‘don’t do this’ what we really mean is, you may want to consider not doing this if you want your show to look professional. I totally get that part of the beauty of Periscope is that it’s done by enthusiastic amateurs who aren’t in a TV studio. So don’t take it all too seriously, and just ignore that little bit of advice if it doesn’t fit with your style.

I have tried to get examples on both the iPhone2 and Android, and much of the advice is also appropriate if you are Meer-ly using another live-streaming service.

The legal stuff is just a general guide. Check local laws in your area. It’s just a heads up.

Some of the Chapters are quite short. It’s so you can find you way around quite easily, and also means that the format is all in place for when we add more killer content to each part of the book. (Oh and there are some blank parts and pages: it’s so that speech bubbles don’t ‘fall off’ the end of a page, and so new chapters start on right-side pages in the printed edition of the book.)

As you may know, the app is slightly different between iOS and Android versions. We have marked important variations with these two icons. (Both these trademarks are of their respective companies.)

1 http://bit.ly/UYPLaunch 2 It is also on iPad. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

This book is mainly for when you broadcast Periscopes – but there are some comments for when you view Periscopes. The different advice is clearly marked with these two icons.

If you are using the pdf version, you can easily search by pressing CONTROL + F on your keyboard and inserting your search term in the box that appears, and then going to the pages listed.

This is the first book in the world about how to do Periscope! So if you spot a mistake or an update, or maybe I haven’t made something clear or want to send a cool example of what you are up to, drop me a line [email protected].

Now … let’s do all we can to Up Your Periscope! Peter Stewart

Peter Stewart is a British journalist and presenter with 25 years’ experience in BBC and commercial radio, and author on broadcasting and social media.

As well as writing the world’s first book on live-streaming on this app, ‘Up Your Periscope’, he is the author of ‘Essential Tweeting Skills for Radio Stations’ and ‘Essential Radio Skills’, ‘Essential Radio Journalism’ (publ: Methuen Drama), and ‘Broadcast Journalism’ (publ: Focal Press) which are core texts for media students and have been published in several languages. (The 7th edition of ‘Broadcast Journalism’ is published in spring 2016.)

The first edition of ‘Up Your Periscope’ was published in April 2015, just a month after the app was launched. Since then Peter has presented hundreds of Scopes on his own channel and those of others, including for the BBC. He was a speaker at the inaugural Periscope Community Summit in New York (September 2015), and has written about the app for various websites and (in June 2015) a paper for the University of Cardiff’s media/journalism department on the use of live-streaming for news media.

In 2014 Peter was a key player in a project for BBC English regions on the integration of social media into the Corporation’s newsrooms. Previously, in his 3 years with the BBC’s journalism training department, Peter devised and led broadcast presentation and production courses, as well as others on law and voice technique, for all levels of the Corporation’s staff. His weekly broadcast journalism coaching articles for the British ‘Radio Magazine’ (2001-10) was read by thousands, and his monthly BBC email of broadcast presentation advice had a worldwide subscriber list of 7,000.

Peter’s presented a wide variety of radio and TV programmes, hosted debates, events and award-ceremonies, and is the recipient of a New York International Radio Award. He has qualifications in advertising and marketing.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and when it comes to capturing your audience’s attention, you want to take full advantage of every chance to communicate your message.

Short attention spans have made lengthy explanations less effective – so how do you keep someone’s interest?

Show, Don’t Tell!  Posting photos and videos on can refer more traffic than posts on Twitter, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn and Google+ combined. (www.konacompany.com )  More than 46% of people have posted a photo or video online, 41 per cent of people have reposted one. (http://www.pewinternet.org/fact-sheets/social- networking-fact-sheet/ (2012 US stats)  Content with relevant images gets 94% more views that content without (www.buffer.com)  Video content makes online purchases 1.6 times more likely (www.skyword.com)

And that’s why Periscope is great for connecting with people3.

And once you have connected you have an opportunity to relate to them, interest them, educate them, entertain them … and try and persuade them to support you, or buy from you.

"Brands can forge a more personal relationship with consumers by using Periscope to give them real-time access to moments that matter, from big announcements to fashion shows to sponsored events" Twitter.com4

The brain processes visuals 60,000 times faster than it does text.

3 @australiawow on Twitter: “Webinars = lecture. Live streaming = after-lecture Q&A.” 4 Ooops: http://bit.ly/UYP_Twitter © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

We are wired to take in visual content faster and more effectively (http://bit.ly/UYPGraphics) than we are words. (After all in evolutionary terms, we only started reading pretty recently.)

Ninety percent of the information sent to our brains is visual; we’ve been trained to consume visual content as quickly as we can. (See: http://bit.ly/UYPVisual )

Indelible, craveable, relatable images have become a high currency in the world of content marketing, and the push for visual content seems to only be getting stronger.

June 2014, http://www.vidyard.com/, a company that manages and analyses video content — released the “B2B Video Marketing Benchmark and Best Practices Report”. It said:  82% of companies using video consider their video marketing initiatives a success  The top three objectives for video assets were: o Increase brand awareness o Lead generation and nurturing o Engagement.

It said that video on the landing page can increase conversion by 80%.

According a report from Cisco (http://bit.ly/UYPCisco ), by 2018 video traffic will account for 79% of all consumer internet traffic globally. Internet users will spend 88% more time on a website with video. Consumers are 144% more likely to purchase a product after seeing a video about it.

It’s clear by these statistics that video will soon be our main source for sharing information.

But only four percent of small companies produce video content

So why aren’t you doing it?  A lack of budget  A lack of skills

But Periscope is:  Inexpensive – there’s no extra cost of video cameras, studios, sound gear, editing time. Periscope itself is a free app and it’s on your phone5. And you already use that to engage with people with texts, and and Facebook and Twitter. (Indeed Periscope is linked through Twitter which makes things simpler still!)  Fast – setting up the app is quick and easy and shooting is simplicity itself.  Mobile –you can shoot from anywhere, at any time. And indeed the app is mobile-to- mobile: your viewers don’t need any special equipment to watch you and that helps them feel part of the action.

5 The global mobile phone market is expected to reach 2.24 billion unit sales in 2019 (http://bit.ly/UYP_Sales ) © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

 Accessible – Periscope streams have a friendly, accessible, behind-the-scenes feel. They’re more authentic and therefore can make more of a connection with people than a glitzy production. Live streaming is easy for people to consume and be involved in.  Live – it’s now, in the moment stuff that lets you show the human side of your business. At a time when customer service reps are a million miles away from people who actually use their product or service, you are an authentic face: the ‘bloke behind the brand’.

It’s a free marketing platform in your pocket.

It’s your own broadcast channel in your bag.

Live streaming on Periscope is new we grant (it launched in March 2015), but remember what people said about Twitter when it started?

“It’ll never catch on!”

“Who’d want to use that?”

“I can’t see the point!”

Now look at it, and the number of people who use it every day!6

Where we are now with Periscope is just the tip of an iceberg. Start using it now, build an audience and get ahead of the wave.

You may be at a loss for how to get started. But we are here to help you succeed with this book and our back-up service on Twitter @UpYourPeriscope.

CHAPTER TWO

*What is Periscope?

Introduction

Periscope (and , Stringwire, UStream, Bambuser and a few others) is an app which allows you to stream live video directly from your smartphone and other people to watch it. Or to put it another way:

(Periscope.tv)

Instead of having to record a video and then tweet a link to it, your Twitter followers will be instantly notified that you have started a show7 and within moments will be watching you live.

That means you can share breaking news or live events as they happen to lots of people at the same time, and get their reaction. And for their part, they can interact by sending written messages (or indeed, emojis), and show their love or appreciation by tapping the screen to send you hearts.

Think of these apps as YouTube without the hassle of uploading: you can immediately be your own live TV station, broadcasting from where ever you are.

And you’ll have your audience literally in the palm of your hand

Some of the attraction of Periscope is because of the general ephemeral nature of its streams: they are available to view for only 24 hours8. So there’s an exclusivity of watching now, what other people can’t see.

Who’s Using Periscope? Well, obviously individual people showing their day-to-day lives, plus professionals:  Small business people and larger multi-national companies…  Officials such as police officers and firefighters…  Celebrities such as Ellen and Oprah….  But also the likes of:

7 You can stream direct from your mobile to Facebook via this app: http://fb.streamago.tv/ . Stringwire doesn’t let viewers send messages – it is purely video 8 From the start, not the end, of the broadcast. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

And millions of other people (as of Augsut 2015, 10 million people had a Periscope account). And now, you too.

“The true beauty of Periscope lies in its accessibility. Sure, the Rolling Stones can live broadcast an L.A. concert, but with Periscope there's no reason your favourite garage band can't do the same thing from a small town in Iowa. Roger Federer used the app to cover his big game, so why not use it to cover your daughter's next varsity tennis match? Big-time politicians can use it to broadcast their speeches, and so can passionate grassroots activists and community organizers. Whatever your interests and talents may be, you can use Periscope to share your message with the world” Mitch Carson - bit.ly/UYP_Carson

CHAPTER THREE

*How to Get Periscope … And How To Set It Up

Introduction

Periscope is available on iOS and Android platforms.

Each device uses different terms for standard phone features (‘Camera Roll’ vs. ‘Gallery’ for example) and the layout of the app is slightly different in each and every attempt has been made within this book, to reflect the main differences.

At the time of writing Periscope is not available Windows9 devices.

Download The App And Sign In

Here’s the link for Android: http://bit.ly/UYP_GooglePlay The Periscope app on Android will only work on 4.4 KitKat and above. To find out what version your Android phone is:

Settings > About Phone > Android version (tap to view)

Here’s the link for iOS: http://bit.ly/UYPAppStore

Periscope is channelled through Twitter, so choose which Twitter account you’d like to use for streaming video and sign in with your Twitter details.

“While Periscope may be the tool that introduces new customers to your brand for the first time, it’s far more useful as a way of building brand loyalty among existing customers. People who follow you on Twitter or other social media outlets are those who’ve already shown some interest in being up to date with your latest news: providing them with content means adding more fuel to the fire of their love for your business.” Aaron Agius - http://bit.ly/UYP_Agius

Or you can sign up for Periscope using just your phone number: you don’t need an actual Twitter account.

9 The Windows app ‘Telescope’ lets you sign up, follow other people and watch their live Periscopes. And you can download Periscope for PC Windows 10. bit.ly/UYP_Windows © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

If you sign up with a phone number, tap in your digits and you’ll be sent an SMS text message with a confirmation code. Enter this and you will be taken to the Log-in and then your new Profile page.

Signing in with a phone number means that it is easier for people to join Periscope and use it as a stand-alone app, which will increase its user base. Some people simply don’t like Twitter, or don’t want to sign up to it (or have an account that is dormant or deactivated) and Periscope believes that it is more likely to attract users if they aren’t forced to first sign up to a service they don’t want.

However, a huge strength of Periscope is its integration with Twitter. Indeed Twitter is really Periscope’s driving force, because an ‘advert’ that your show is starting is distributed to your followers on this platform. So, anyone not linking the two is missing a huge marketing opportunity to get the word out about their shows and their brand. Our future explanations will be as though you have got a Twitter account.

Periscope isn’t so much channelled through Twitter, but powered by it.

Other live-streaming apps miss out because they don’t have the promo-power of the Twitter integration to help drive people to view the videos.

Twitter and Periscope are a match made in heaven because they both live for ‘in the moment’ comment and reaction.

You can run multiple accounts if you wish: just make sure that you have added your other Twitter accounts in Settings on your phone. Having several accounts is useful if you want to follow and respond to one set of people professionally and another on a more personal basis. But claim all your Twitter names on Periscope while you still can. And be careful which account you Periscope from (there is no on-screen logo when you go live, to remind you).

You may want to change your name to have a different personality or profile than you do on other social media. Most people do not do this; indeed as we show throughout this book, it’s important for your brand to have personality and hiding behind another name on Periscope could harm that.

When you sign up, suggested usernames will be made, based on your Twitter @name.

Or you can create a different username. It must be unique and have at least two characters. If the icon goes red, the username’s already gone.

You can’t keep changing your Periscope user name, so think things through carefully before you confirm what you want it to be. Do you want to:  Grab your real name?  Grab your brand or business name?  Create a new name (between 2 and 20 characters)?

Then check and double-check you have spelt any new name correctly, with appropriate capitalisations

Your Twitter bio and picture will show in your Periscope account, and then you’ll be shown a list of people you may want to follow, based on who you follow on Twitter.

Of course you don't need to follow on Periscope everyone you follow on Twitter, so choose them carefully:  People you follow may reciprocate by following you.  The more people you follow, the more push notifications you will be sent! (More on this later.)

You can unfollow people later if you change your mind, for example if they do too many shows or the content of them is not what you had anticipated.

So you are told of any updates to the app, make sure that you are following @Periscope on Periscope!

Change your bio information later, right here in Periscope and we will explain how to do that, and how to change your picture, a bit later on.10

Now you’re in, let’s have a look around!

There are two basic things you can do on Periscope:  Watch  Broadcast

10 If there is a problem connecting your Periscope account with your Twitter one, log out of Periscope, the out of Twitter … then, as it’s the ‘host’, log into Twitter and into Periscope, in that order. This should help force a reconnection. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

The iOS app has four tabs across the bottom of the screen:

The Android app has three, across the top:

Tap the ‘old- Tap the Globe to Tap the crowd to fashioned TV with watch shows by find people who aerial’, to watch the people you you may want to shows by the don’t follow follow people you follow

On iOS - the ‘broadcast now’ tab is on the top main menu bar – as shown above

On Android - the ‘broadcast now’ tab is on bottom of the main screen.

When you start the app, the default first page is this Watch page (with the TV highlighted).

We will look at each of these pages in turn.

CHAPTER FOUR

*Your Personal ‘Watch’ Page

Introduction

Your Watch page is the first screen that will open up when you launch Periscope after creating your account. Tap it at any time to be taken to the Shows presented by the people you follow.

On this page you will see:  The people you follow on Periscope who have live shows on now (these are shown at the at the top of this page)  Shows by the people who you follow who have presented one in the last 24 hours and which have not been deleted by them (the most recent at the top, and a recording timestamp alongside)  Shows from the last 24 hours recommended by the people you follow (these are amongst the other Replay shows and again, are ones which have not been deleted by the presenter, with the most recent at the top and a recording timestamp alongside).

Alongside each entry are details showing how old the programme is and (if live) how many viewers it has at the moment.

The number of shows available to watch Some of the This is the Scopes may be iOS layout ‘Featured’ as ‘recommended highlights’ by the Periscope team.

Below the Featured shows are other shows by the people you follow, or have been recommended by them. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

Note the time stamps. You have 24 hours in which to watch a Replay show.

And this is the Android layout.

The Android broadcast button (which looks like this) is at the bottom of this main page

Featured shows will have been chosen by the Periscope team (or an algorithm) as ‘worth watching’ because of factors such as their content, the number of viewers, the number of hearts, and the reputation of the person streaming them. And if they do that, they usually let you know! (There may be a time when having your stream as a ‘featured’ one, will be worth as much as having your website on page one of a Google search.)

How to Watch a Show Simply tap a Show title to be taken to either the live stream or the Replay. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

CHAPTER FIVE

*The ‘Global Listings’ Page

Introduction

Here’s where you can find people from around the world who are presenting live shows right now.

The default option is the ‘Map View’. The second is the ‘List View’. You can either tap on the slider button at the top of the page to show you the two different views, or (in iOS), toggle between the two by tapping the Globe icon again.

Map View

With the Map View now you can easily find Scopes near to you, or explore something that’s happening the other side of the world.

The Map View is initially on a ‘world’ view with a red ‘hot spot’ dot showing current ‘live shows’, and blue ones which are less than 24 hours old (as long as the broadcaster had enabled their ‘location’ feature).

You can zoom in (by outward-pinching) to see the number of streams in parts of each country, and then in each city… or neighbourhood.

Every time you zoom to a new place on the map, Periscope will reload live and Replay broadcasts from this new region.

Tap on a dot and you will be taken straight to that person’s live show.

This could mean that:  You can easily watch streams from city-to-city as your whim takes you  You can quickly go to a specific location if you know that a news event is happening in a certain place  You can see people who are streaming near to you (and potentially have a Periscope ‘meet up’…)

What Does This Mean For Broadcasters?

You can share your location – and therefore appear on this map - by tapping the ‘compass button’ in the Broadcast Screen that we’ll come to a little bit later.

Plus, having your Replay Scope appear as a blue dot, makes you and your content much more discoverable.

Why Would You Want To Share Your Location? Giving your location:  Gives authenticity to your personality and brand – Viewers will know that you are ‘real’ and based somewhere, even if it is not local to them.  May strengthen your relationship with Viewers – who know something about where you are, maybe having visited or lived there.  May give context about what you are showing and talking about – for example if you are at a show or describing a view.

If you are on location and that location is part of the content of your broadcast, it makes sense to let your viewers see the area map.

 Makes it easier for people to find you – if you are have a business that is ‘location- based’ – for example a theatre, farmers’ market or café – then turn the location feature on, so people can easily find and come visit the real you!  And crucially, as we have said, if you share your location you will appear on the Map and that means more people are likely to come across your Show, and then go on to watch and Follow you.

Why Would You Not Want To Share Your Location? Being on the Map has security and privacy implications. See how accurate it is:

 Low-lifes and scumbags will know almost exactly where you are, and that you have an expensive phone that you are literally holding out in front of you ready for the taking…  Your Follower on Periscope, could become a real-life follower (or rather, ‘stalker’)  Do you really want people to know the area in which you live? If they watch your Shows, they know your name, what you look like, what you sound like and your interests and hobbies. You may even have shown the outside of your house, or the street. A jigsaw effect means it’s not tricky for them to locate you. (See bit.ly/UYP_FindYou )  Do you really want people to know the area in which you live, and then when you mention you are going away for the holidays, come around when you’re gone…?  Oh and this is not just about you. What if you Scope from a friend’s house, will they be happy with that? What if someone Scopes when they come to visit you? What if that person is the babysitter: essentially telling any weirdo that they are, say, a teenage girl, alone in your house with your kids…

As we say, we’ll talk more about how to turn the Location on and off a little later.

The List View This is the List View of Live and Replay shows. Simply toggle between the ‘Map’ and ‘List’ options at the top of the screen on this page.

Here you’ll see a list of live broadcasts around the world (by people you are not Following), that you can dip in to and watch.

Each show has a thumbnail picture (which is intermittently updated), a title and a note of the current number of people watching. If you want to join them, tap on any entry and you will be taken straight to that stream, and watch live. Your profile name will appear on the screen for everyone else to see and you may be welcomed by the host with a namecheck. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

Under the list of Live shows are ‘Replay shows’ that have finished and you to watch for 24 hours after they ended, (as long as the presenter decided to archive the show and didn’t then subsequently delete it.11) Again, tap to view.

Choosing Your Language Change the setting in your Profile to indicate the language you would prefer to see Scope titles in. It won’t translate any Titles, but it will only show Titles written in that language. By default Periscope will detect your language and select those titles.

11 We tell you how you can save and delete a show elsewhere in the book. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

The language you choose here will also contribute towards the people you see in our Trending list, and whether you will feature in someone else’s. I’ll come on to that a little later.

CHAPTER SIX

*Your Broadcasting Page

Introduction

Of course, with Periscope you can broadcast live video to anyone in the world and have them contribute in return.

In Android, the ‘broadcast’ button, at the bottom of the screen looks like this. Tap it to be taken to your Broadcasting Page.

On iOS it looks like this.

When you are in the main ready-to-broadcast screen (below), you have various options (this is from an iOS device, but Android is similar):

Put your title Tap here to here quit

Tap this to make your broadcast private. (In Android Tap here to this function is at hide the the top of the comments broadcast screen): being made.

This is to auto-send a ‘show is starting’ This is the message to location your Twitter tagging button followers. Tap here to go live

Some of these buttons are self-explanatory (such as the ‘quit’ and ‘start broadcast’ ones), but let’s go through the others.

Location Sharing

We looked at this a little earlier, but by way of a quick re-cap if you turn ON the location:  You will be discoverable on the Map View  Your location will also appear in the map (under your show title when you broadcast), on which people can zoom in.

Simply toggle the ‘compass’ button to turn the feature ON or OFF (in iOS it ‘throbs’ to remind you). The compass turns white when it is activated.

You may see this screen before you are able to turn the location feature ON. Simply tap Settings and it will take you to your phone’s settings page where you can grant permission, and then hop back to Periscope.

Once again, if you do not want to be approached by a fellow Periscope, and especially if you are broadcasting from home, you may want to turn off the ‘location’ sharing before you go live. But, your show won’t appear on the global map (although the people who follow you will still, of course, get a notification that you are live).

If you want more exposure turn the location on … but doing that could also lead to more exposure of your privacy.

If you want to turn off the Location feature permanently (in case you forget to tap the compass each time), go to the Settings in your iPhone:

Then Privacy > Location Services > Periscope:

Then click ‘Never’:

Of course, you can turn off the ‘Location’ feature for your phone (so your location is not seen), but you will still be able to see the ‘map feature’ on your phone to discover other people.

Private Broadcasts

in Android

in iOS

“Private scopes are like Twitter DMs” @AndreeaC_T on Twitter

You have the option to do a private broadcast (‘closed show’) so only certain people will be told about, be able to see your stream12, be able to see, comment and ‘heart’ you.

Why would you want to do this?:  It could be a confidential Scope about business  You could be asking someone advice and want to show them something.  You could be doing a training session for a closed group13  You may have one Periscope account but use it for different formats, say for personal and business use, or one for teaching piano lessons and another for violin lessons.

Of course most times you’ll want to do a public programme (the default setting), and reach a bigger audience. But in a private Scope you can target just those who the content relates to.

Tap the icon (shown above) and this will appear:

A list of mutual followers (people you follow who also follow you back) comes up to choose from: they are naturally the people who you are likely to broadcast to. You can select as many people as you want to join a private Scope. There’s also an option to quickly select all of your mutual follows, in case you want to share a Scope with friends, but not the whole world.

12 Private broadcasts don’t show up in the Watch list either.

13 Hmmm… you could do a private stream and charge people to see it… (http://bit.ly/UYP_Bitcoin)

With the 3D Touch feature on Apple’s iPhone 6s and 6s+ users can long-press on the Periscope app icon — to auto-start a mutual broadcast.

Don’t worry if you forget to turn off the Twitter auto-notification before you go private! Although people can see the link and tap on it, it will take them no-where!

Decide Who Can Comment

If you tap here, the only people who will be able to comment will be the people who you follow.

The developers have assumed that those are the people who you have taken a conscious decision to ‘pre-approve’ as it were, and so stops ‘outsiders’ or trolls from spoiling your Show.

Note that the default, greyed-out position lets everybody comment, and highlighting the button permits only your followers. (A lot of people presume the opposite.)

(See more on hiding comments and blocking trolls, elsewhere in the book.)

Posting Notifications Through Twitter

If you tap on the ‘Twitter bird’ in this screen, then your Show Title and a link to the live video (or the archived show) will be tweeted to your Twitter followers. Of course having your video publicised on your Twitter feed gives it a ‘longer tail’ and increases the chances of more people seeing the show. In effect, now you are on two social networks.

(If you have a private Twitter account (one that is locked to the public) then you have immediately reduced the potential number of people who can view your video.)

People will see the tweet in this format:

LIVE on #Periscope: [Video Title] [Link to Video]

So for example:

There's no way at the moment to change these tweets – what you write as the broadcast title is what is sent out. However there’s nothing stopping you having a friend or colleague from grabbing the link to your show on their device, putting it in a customised tweet and sending it out immediately you start broadcasting!

As well as a tweet, your Followers will also be sent a ‘push notification’ to their phone, together with a Twitter chirp: © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

That happens even if you are watching a Periscope stream from someone else at the time:

(Tapping ‘View’ will of course, cut off the show you are watching and start playing the new one…)

More about Notifications in a chapter later in the book.

Your Broadcast Title

‘Title’ is one of the Top Two T’s of Periscope. And the number one mistake newbies make is not putting in a Title at all, or putting one in that doesn’t sell their Show.

The title is what is tweeted, and is in the push notification too. It’s also what will describe your show in the Watch menu.

So make sure that it is a real attention-grabber, to persuade people to tap and watch. It should be:  Short  Tempting  Clickable  But … true

Note that when writing your title in Periscope the app will also add ‘Live on Periscope’ to the auto-tweet, as well as a link to the live show. So keep your title short so it is not cut short! Indeed if it is too long, you may get an error message.

Titles will help you get the viewers.

But content will help you keep them. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

If you do not give your Show a title now, you will not be able to add it later. Neither will you be able to change a title that you have added.

We will look at ‘titles’ in some more detail later in the book.

*The ‘People’ and ‘Profile’ Pages

This is where you can find details of other people, create your own profile and check some of your basic stats.

In Android, these icons are at the top of this page.

Under the Trending list is the list of people you are following on Twitter…

…tap on this button to follow them on Periscope, too

The Trending List The Trending List replaced the ‘Most Loved List’ in November 2015. The old list ranked people by the number of hearts that they had been given … or bought. Indeed that cheating was one of the reasons that it was discontinued: the hearts-total of any particular person was no real indication of the value of their broadcasts.

We saw earlier that the Featured Scopes are in your Watch page: these are hand-picked, recommended broadcasts.

On this People page you may see a Featured Scoper: an individual who is worth following.

Also here are Trending Scopers: people who have been picked by an algorithm, (and then hand-checked by Periscope staff, for taste and decency). Being on this list is valuable because it gives you more exposure: people who don’t Follow you and would not know of your existence get to see you for the first time. It’s an opportunity to showcase your best work.

The list is reconfigured each 24-hours and you are likely to appear on it if:  You have a (reasonably) high number of viewers (thought to be14 500-1000)  The time they spent watching (the ‘retention rate’)  The number of times that they shared the broadcast  The number of times those shares were through Twitter and…  The number of times those Tweets were Re-Tweeted.

There is a strong link with Twitter here, because of course that company owns the Periscope one. Making each of them stronger depends on increasing their user-numbers. So it makes sense to have Scopes promoted on Twitter, to get more of one’s followers there… jump on to Periscope. So when you ask people to share your show, encourage them to do this via Twitter as well as within Periscope itself.

Your Profile Page

Your Periscope Bio / Profile Periscope will import your Twitter profile picture and bio, from the Twitter account that you connected with Periscope.

Remember this is perhaps the first thing that people will read about you – so make a great impression.

Some key things:  All your Twitter bio will be imported, but not all of it will be seen on Periscope  Your bio is highly searchable  Because web viewers can view your bio, put in a hyperlink that they can click through to your website, sales page, or a page of resources … or any other site (have the full address – that is, include http:// )

14 The ‘goalposts’ for this page are likely to be ever-shifting…and only scant details are shared as to how the list is determined. You will also only see Scopers featured who have chosen the same language as you have, in their Periscope Settings. © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

 Sell yourself!

Hold on!

“Your bio is highly searchable”?

Yep. So make sure you include key search terms in what you write:  #  @

That’s because in the Periscope Search box, people can search for words as well as hashtags and @names, and so if you use these terms it increases your discoverability.

You can change your bio (and your ‘full’ name) independently of Twitter and you probably should do this to reflect your different priorities when on this platform. Put in keywords which will be picked up by the inbuilt search feature.

Go into your Profile > pencil icon > Change bio / picture

People tab > Profile tab (top rhs) > double tap on the bio

Have words and phrases that will hook people in. Reading your bio is probably their first contact with you.

So, your Twitter bio may talk about your job and what kind of RT’s you do.

Your Periscope bio will probably include the content of the shows you present, how you can help people - and of course there’s no need to mention RTs.

So if you run a B&B in Barcelona, or are a plumber in Paris, put those key words in your bio. Then if someone is looking for your service rather than your name, they can still find you.

You could even change your bio on a daily basis, incorporating a trail for your upcoming shows.

Not all of the bio will be immediately visible so you may need to scroll down. Bear this in mind when you re-write it: think what words other people may use to search for you and put those key words at the top and make sure that the bio doesn’t cut off mid-word or phrase.

Twitter ‘verified’ badges (the ‘blue tick’ for celebrities, influencers, VIPs and corporations) like this one: © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

… appear in the Users section, and in Search as well. This means that it is easier to check that the person who you’re following, or who is commenting in your stream, is who they claim to be.

Your Periscope Picture You can change your profile picture directly inside the app itself. Here’s how:

People tab > Your Profile tab > tap on your picture >

Then choose one of these options to change your picture, and then save it:

This means that there’s no excuse for having a default Twitter ‘egg’ logo as your picture on Periscope. To quote @MarkShaw: Only have a picture of an egg if you’re an egg farmer.

You could choose to have a different picture on Twitter and Periscope, but if your name is the same on both platforms then this may water-down your brand and lead to confusion by your customers, clients or viewers. It is usually best to have consistency of awareness across all platforms (Twitter, Periscope, Facebook, LinkedIn…) as well as your own printed stationery and website.

Your Periscope Bio On The Web If you go to www.periscope.tv/username (where ‘username’ is the name of the Scoper: www.periscope.tv/UpYourPeriscope ), you’ll see all the recent broadcasts for that person.

Have this address in your bios on other social media platforms and in your tweets: it is, if you like, your ‘holding page’ for your presence on Periscope. When people land there, they will see your picture, bio and will also see the recent shows’ tally.

Followers and Followings Also in your Profile page you can see:  Who are your Followers – and Follow them if you want  Who you are Following – and Unfollow them if you wish

People tab > Your Profile tab > scroll down

A table similar to this will show how many people you are Following (tap to see their names and profiles), and how many people are Following you (again, tap to see who they are). Additionally it can list those who have been blocked (see later) and also how many broadcasts you have streamed.

Obviously this example is a profile of a newbie – perhaps just like you!

The list of the people who are Following you on Periscope is sorted by how recently that person Followed you. It makes it more awkward to find people (but arguably, you don’t need to do that very often), but makes building a relationship with people much easier as you can now spot the people who have recently started supporting you – their names and profiles will be at the top of this list. So every day or so, go through this process to see who they are and perhaps Follow them back, watch one of their shows and make a comment/give hearts, or reach out to them on Twitter (if they are there).

This is another way to build and strengthen relationships.

The information about the broadcasts is only available to you, and is only a list. In other words just because it keeps a tally of all your shows, you do not have access to them any longer than the usual 24 hour period.

Your Blocked List The screen-grab above shows the number of people Blocked. In this example the user has blocked two people. Again, tap the button to see who they are. Periscope says blocking “promotes transparency and accountability”.

There’s more on blocking later in the book.

CHAPTER EIGHT *iPhone 3D Shortcuts © www.UpYourperiscope.guru

Introduction

If you have an iPhone 6s or 6s+ you have some shortcuts and added features not available to any other iPhone or Android user.

Use the ‘force touch’ on the main Periscope app icon to access them.

Broadcast Quickly start a public broadcast. This save you pressing the app and going to the Broadcast page.

Broadcast Mutuals Force touching this button starts a private broadcast that only your mutual followers see (that is, people you follow and who also follow you back). This is a great way to quickly go live to your friends or business associates.

Teleport This takes you to a random Scope that’s live now, somewhere (anywhere!) in the world. To that extent it is a bit like the ‘Couch’ feature, described later (viewers on the web are shown random streams…). Having this feature makes your content much more discoverable (albeit, by chance!)

Search People Pretty self-explanatory!
