    Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father.

    Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Since its launch in 1982, the Marco Polo label has for twenty years sought to draw attention to unexplored repertoire.␣ Its main goals have been to record the best music of unknown composers and the rarely heard works of well-known composers.␣ At the same time it aspired, like Marco Polo himself, to bring something of the East to the West and of the West to the East. For many years Marco Polo was the only label dedicated to recording rare repertoire.␣ Most of its releases were world première recordings of works by Romantic, Late Romantic and Early Twentieth Century composers, and of light classical music. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again, particularly those whose careers were affected by political events and composers who refused to follow contemporary fashions.␣ Of particular interest are the operas by Richard Wagner’s son Siegfried, who ran the Bayreuth Festival for so many years, yet wrote music more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck. Poza archiwalnymi najbardziej wiarygodne wydają się opublikowane relacje Angeli Potockiej, która nie była jego wychowanką, ale po- przez rodzinę męża znała dobrze rzeczywistość, w jakiej Teodor obracał się w różnych okresach swojego życia, zwłaszcza w młodości. Zapewne nieraz z nim rozmawiała i przypuszczalnie miała do dyspozycji sporą część jego dziennika, który powstawał od późnych lat czterdziestych, oraz potrafiła zamieszczone tam jego refleksje i opinie uzupełnić własnymi obserwacjami czy wnioskami, a nawet oceniać jego poglądy. Pod- kreślała, że był koneserem malarstwa, poezji i historii oraz znawcą polityki, zwłaszcza jej nurtu liberalno-demokratycznego2, należałoby tu dodać jeszcze teatr.     Sonntag, 18.September 2016 - Autofreier Tag in Brüssel © Brigitte Beidinger Worte des Präsidenten Mit Freude erinnern wir uns an die vielen ÖBG Mitglieder und andere Belgier und Österreicher, die das Angebot zur Teilnahme an zahlreichen Übertragungen der Europameisterschaft am Donaukanal in Wien (Organisation: Belgische Botschaft) angenommen haben. Bis zum EM-Viertelfinale hat das erfolgreiche Belgische Tricolore - Team es geschafft. Programm Wissen Sie das … Fußball Ferien in Belgien Seite 16 Seite 17 Seite 10 Seite 14 Auf diese recht erfolgreiche Performance folgten im August die historischen Olympischen Spiele. Wer mitfieberte, in der kühlen Sommernacht oder am warmen Sommerabend, konnte die unglaubliche Leistung vieler Olympioniken bewundern. Vor allem - und dies besonders für alle Radliebhaber - wird die Leistung von Greg van Avermaet in Erinnerung bleiben, die mit olympischem Gold gekrönt wurde. Auch die belgischen Hockeyspieler haben sich verausgabt und Silber nach Belgien gebracht. Ein kleines Land wie Belgien hat mit vielen Talenten international sportlich Großartiges geleistet. Mitten im Sommer hatten wir auch die Ehre und das Glück, unseren belgischen Dirigenten Peter Ritzen im Wiener Musikverein zu bewundern. Bezaubernd, wie er es schaffen konnte, auf dieser Weltbühne sein Orchester zur Höchstleistung zu bringen. Auch im Sommer wurde ich zur Feier des Belgischen Nationalfeiertages nach Salzburg eingeladen. Bei dieser Feier auf Einladung von Frau Konsul von Belgien, Dr. Andrea Berger, konnte ich unseren neuen Vertreter von Vlamingen in de Wereld (V.I.W.), André Leers, vorstellen. Das jährliche P.a.N.-Sommerfest wurde in den Wiener Blumengärten Hirschstetten im 22. Wiener Bezirk abgehalten und war sehr gut besucht. In „Wissen Sie dass…“ können die Leser/innen alle Neuigkeiten über „neue“ Belgier (Universitätsprofessoren, Forscher, Weltküchenchefs, neuer OVSE Botschafter, etc...) und mit Belgien verbundenen Österreichern finden.

The articles in this yearbook, by British and American, Dutch and Flemish contributors, survey the living, contemporary culture of the Low Countries as well as their cultural heritage. In its words and pictures The Low Countries provides information about literature and the arts, but also about broad social and historical developments in Flanders and the Netherlands. The culture of Flanders and the Netherlands is not an isolated phenomenon; its development over the centuries has been one of continuous interaction with the outside world. In consequence the yearbook also pays due attention to the centuries-old continuing cultural interplay between the Low Countries and the world beyond their borders. In a world which is growing ever smaller and becoming more and more interdependent, international, even supranational in character, we regard Ralph Waldo Emerson's statement as a call for independent cultures to look beyond their national frontiers. By drawing attention to the diversity, vitality and international dimension of the culture of Flanders and the Netherlands, The Low Countries hopes to contribute to a lively dialogue between differing cultures.
