hanghai will embrace a hustle and bustle 6 months soon. Lasting from May 1st to Oct 31st 2010, the Shanghai World Expo will be the biggest event in its history. 70 million visitors are expected from both inland and abroad to join in this world event to see the displays of exhibitors from over 200 countries from the public and private sectors, civil society, international organizations. More than 20,000 cultural shows will be held during the Expo. SIt is the first time for the World Expo to be held in a developing country. Themed by Better City, Better Life, the 2010 World Expo Shanghai conveys an inspired wish for a better city life in future history. Indeed, in the preparation for the World Expo, Shanghai, which aims to be one of the economic, finance, trade and transport centers in the world, spares no efforts in the urban construction. Massive construction of new metro lines has been undertaken for years in order to serve the traffic demands of the event. Shanghai Metro Lines 13, Lines 2 East Extension, 9 Phase II, 10 and 11 Phase I were all ready separately before the event. And the symbol of Shanghai, Huangpu River Bund was also reopened at the end of March to improve the landscape and facilities for visitors to the World Expo. Shanghai is doing its best to impress visitors with the city government already splashing out more than US$700 million on renovating the Bund riverfront, as well a whopping US$45 billion to upgrade transport and infrastructure. More audience come to attend the Expo, more commercial chance will be explored from. Shanghai won’t be only place to enjoy the benefit, so will Yangtze River Delta Region as a whole. Con- nie Cheng, vice director of the Shanghai Tourism Administration said they were targeting residents living in Shanghai’s neighboring rich coastal provinces to form the bulk of the domestic tourists. Of 70 million visitors estimated, 5 percent are expected from overseas. World Expo brings a delicate glob- ally village to Chinese, in return Chinese will showcase the world an exquisite performance. What effect will the World Expo pose on Shanghai, on Yangtze River Delta, and on China? Special Report this issue has more to tell. And CFT special issue 9-10 for the Expo in May is worthy of anticipation too.

42 Eat As the locals in Shanghai put it, “Blessed are those born in Shanghai as they have the most chances to taste deli- cious food”. Shanghai Cuisine is not one of the Eight Major Cuisines of China but is a choice blend of the most appealing aspects of these other national styles of food. Also, Shanghai’s chefs are always ready to adopt the best aspects of foreign cuisines and make them their own. Therefore, it may be safely said that you can enjoy all the best food from home and abroad in Shanghai. Xia Zi Da Wu Shen Xia Zi Da Wu Shen is noted as the most famous seafood dish in Shanghai cuisine. Dried sea cucumber is immersed in water to restore its original size and then stewed with oil, yellow wine, soybean sauce, broth, sugar, shallot, starch sauce and shrimp roe. This dish is nutritious with rich protein and minerals and is said to effectively control cancer. Ba Bao La Jiang Ba Bao La Jiang is typical among the few spicy dishes in Shanghai Cuisine. It is a Benbang dish featuring great flavor and bright color. Bean sauce and chili sauce are blended and stir-fried with shelled shrimps, chicken, chicken stock, pork, pig offal, dried small shrimps, bamboo shoots and various kinds of seasoning. This dish with such a great number of ingredients gives us some idea of how delicate Shanghai cuisine can be.

You Bao He Xia You Bao He Xia is a good choice if you like sea food. Live shrimps are deep-fried and then sir-fried with a special sauce made of yellow wine, soybean sauce, sugar, shal- lot sauce and ginger sauce. The dish tastes fairly sweet and fresh.

Qing Chao Shan Hu Qing Chao Shan Hu, also known as Xiang You Shan Hu, is an eel dish. Fresh eels are stir-fried with shredded bamboo shoots, yellow wine, soybean sauce, ginger, sugar and starch sauce. After being put on a plate, chopped shallot is sprinkled on the dish and hot oil is poured onto it. Consequently, Qing Chao Shan Hu crackles when it is served at the table. Besides the dishes mentioned above, Shanghai also provides diners with an extensive menu of many other delicious Shanghai dishes such as steamed crabs, sauted shelled shrimps, braised fish, smoked fish, steamed shad, braised herring liver, braised eel, plain boiled chicken and stewed chicken.

Local Snacks Shanghai’s local snacks should not be missed. You should try the famous Nanxiang steamed stuffed buns, crab- yellow pastry, fried stuffed buns, chop rice cake, and vegetable stuffed buns, Leisha dumplings and wontons. Various snack streets in Shanghai have many restaurants and eateries to tempt you. Wujiang Road, Old Town God Temple Snack Street, South Yunnan Road and Xianxia Road are the best among them. As an all-embracing city, Shanghai offers various delica- cies from other regions of China and many foreign countries and areas. No matter how fastidious you are about dining, you can enjoy your time in Shanghai to the full.

44 Chart 5: Processing surplus is rising Chart 6: Non-processing trade is stable China’s commodity-intensive stimulus package is one reason why the non-processing account swung to a deep deficit in 2009, causing import volumes to surge even as prices collapsed. The February data suggests that China’s demand growth has peaked in some cat- egories of non-processed imports. Iron ore imports are well down from their av- erage H2-2009 levels, but rose by 6% m/ m to 49mn tonnes in February, suggest- ing that demand from China’s steel mills is growing strongly. Imports rose by 19.8% m/m (57.8% y/y) to 4.3mn bar- rels per day, the second-highest level on record. Crude oil makes up by far the largest share of China’s commodity im- port bill, and we expect imports of crude and crude products to reach about 245mn tonnes in 2010.
