Foreword It is now more than 40 years since the first archaeological excavations in the United Arab Emirates were undertaken, at the island of Umm an-Nar, adjacent to Abu Dhabi. Those excavations, which began in 1959, led to the recognition of a previously unknown civilisation, and, during the decades that have followed, further excavations and studies by archaeological teams, both from the U.A.E. and from universities and other academic institutions from around the globe, have made discoveries that have placed this country firmly on the map, in terms of its contribution to world heritage and to the emergence of modern civilisation. Yet, despite those discoveries, we, the people of the United Arab Emirates, still know little of our past. While there have been papers presented at international conferences abroad, or published in international scientific journals, relatively little has been published in the U.A.E. itself, and even less in Arabic. Nor, despite the extensive amount of work that is undertaken in the U.A.E. every year, there has never before been a conference devoted specifically to the archaeology of this country. In recognition of that and inspired by the words of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, “a people that does not know its past can have neither present nor future,” the Zayed Centre for Heritage and History, organised the First International Conference on the Archaeology of the United Arab Emirates, held in Abu Dhabi in April 2001. As the papers in this volume show, the conference was attended by many of the leading local and international archaeologists who have worked in the U.A.E. over the last 40 years. It would be impossible to present the whole of the country’s archaeological record in detail in one publication, or at a single conference. From this volume, however, a coherent picture emerges of the whole range of the archaeological heritage of the people of the U.A.E., from the Late Stone Age, over 7000 years ago, until the Late Islamic period. That picture also includes insights into the important cultural heritage of the Emirati people, who have interacted with countries throughout the world for thousands of years. Especially with the Arabian Peninsula. It is my hope that this volume will help not only the people of the Emirates, but also others, to gain an insight into that past.     Before the Emirates: an Archaeological and Historical Account of Developments in the Region c. 5000 BC to 676 AD D.T. Potts Introduction In a little more than 40 years the territory of the former Trucial States and modern United Arab Emirates (UAE) has gone from being a blank on the archaeological map of Western Asia to being one of the most intensively studied regions in the entire area. The present chapter seeks to synthesize the data currently available which shed light on the lifestyles, industries and foreign relations of the earliest inhabitants of the UAE. Climate and Environment Within the confines of a relatively narrow area, the UAE straddles five different topographic zones. Moving from west to east, these are (1) the sandy Gulf coast and its intermittent sabkha; (2) the desert foreland; (3) the gravel plains of the interior; (4) the Hajar mountain range; and (5) the eastern mountain piedmont and coastal plain which represents the northern extension of the Batinah of Oman. Each of these zones is characterized by a wide range of exploitable natural resources (Table 1) capable of sustaining human groups practising a variety of different subsistence strategies, such as hunting, horticulture, agriculture and pastoralism. Tables 2–6 summarize the chronological distribution of those terrestrial faunal, avifaunal, floral, marine, and molluscan species which we know to have been exploited in antiquity, based on the study of faunal and botanical remains from excavated archaeological sites in the UAE. Unfortunately, at the time of writing the number of sites from which the inventories of faunal and botanical remains have been published remains minimal.

It has 38–45 circum-oral spines and the vitellarium reaches to no less than 17% of the hindbody length from the ventral sucker. It differs from other species of Stephanostomum with these characteristics by various combinations of the ventral hiatus of the circum-oral spine rows, the relatively long pars prostatica and short ejacu- latory duct, the elongate body and the wide gaps between the gonads. Key words: Stephanostomum tantabiddii n. sp., Acanthocolpidae, Digenea, Carangoides fulvogut- tatus, Carangidae, Perciformes, Ningaloo Coral Reef, Western Australia Introduction Members of the large genus Stephanostomum Looss, 1899 parasitise a wide variety of teleost hosts, but a significant proportion of them are found in fishes of the perciform fam- ily Carangidae. This family includes many large pelagic piscivores. The second intermedi- ate hosts of Stephanostomum are almost always found to be fishes and, as piscivores, carangids are therefore particularly susceptible to infection (Pérez-Urbiola & Martínez- Díaz, 2001).

(Signature)………………………………………………. 1 Abstract This dissertation discusses United Arab Emirates (UAE) state-society relations in historical perspective; analyses qualitatively the Emirati political culture; examines how the latter affects governmental policies in the UAE; and evaluates both qualitatively and quantitatively the political orientations and values of the Emirati educated youth. Through a discussion of existing theoretical and conceptual approaches, and the observation of the UAE case study, it argues that an important and overlooked dimension among students of state-society relations in authoritarian rentier states is citizens’ political culture, which should nonetheless be examined within a more integrative framework of analysis. Accordingly, this study employs a refined version of the holistic ‘state-in-society’ approach (Kamrava, 2008), in combination with rentier state theory (RST) and the political culture perspective (Almond & Verba, 1963), to qualitatively discuss the general Emirati political culture (agency/input), and assess how the latter affects governmental performance/policies (output); and to evaluate, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the political culture of the educated Emirati youth as the main potential supporters or opponents (agency/input) of the ruling elite.
