But things take an unsettling turn with the birth of their son. Convinced that the baby must be kept free of all contaminants, Mina develops fanatical obsessions with veganism, cleanliness, and purity that may kill the child unless Jude can stop her. With stunning performances from Driver and Rohrwacher, this intense psychological drama suggests that sometimes a parent’s love can be the scariest thing of all. CAST BIOGRAPHIES ADAM DRIVER can currently be seen in Noah Baumbach’s WHILE WE’RE YOUNG. The film, which also stars Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, and Amanda Seyfried, revolves around a middle-aged couple (Stiller and Watts) whose career and marriage are overturned when a disarming young couple (Driver and Seyfried) enters their lives. WHILE WE’RE YOUNG premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and was released by A24 Films. Driver will next star in Saverio Costanzo’s HUNGRY HEARTS, which will be released by IFC Films in 2015. -

Public History, Private Memories: Historical Imagination in the New Italian Cinema 1988-1999
NOTE This online version of the thesis has slightly different page formatting from the print version held in Griffith University Library. The content is otherwise exactly the same. Public History, Private Memories: Historical imagination in the New Italian cinema 1988-1999 Tiziana Ferrero-Regis 2003 Public History, Private Memories: Historical imagination in the New Italian cinema 1988-1999 Tiziana Ferrero-Regis B.A. (Honours) Film, Media and Cultural Studies, Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February, 2003 i Abstract The concern with the following arguments started during a study of national and international cinemas, from the desire to account for a cinema that internationally was doing well, but was undervalued domestically. The aims were to account for the renewal of Italian filmmaking from 1988, the New Italian cinema, and understand the conditions behind this renewal. The thesis identifies in the historical theme and in the recurrence of features from Italian cinema history elements of coherence with previous cinema production. The first consideration that emerges is that a triangulation between a new generation of filmmakers, their audience and recent history shaped the recovery of Italian cinema from 1988. A second consideration is that no discussion of Italian cinema can be separated from a discussion of that which it represents: Italian society and politics. This representation has not only addressed questions of identity for a cohort of spectators, but on occasions has captured the attention of the international audience. Thus the thesis follows a methodologic approach that positions the texts in relation to certain traditions in Italian filmmaking and to the context by taking into consideration also industrial factors and social and historical changes. -

ITALIAN BOOKSHELF Edited by Dino S. Cervigni and Anne Tordi
ITALIAN BOOKSHELF Edited by Dino S. Cervigni and Anne Tordi GENERAL & MISCELLANEOUS STUDIES The Bread and the Rose: A Trilingual Anthology of Neapolitan Poetry from the 16th Century to the Present. Ed. Achille Serrao and Luigi Bonaffini. Mineola, NY: Legas, 2005. The ninth volume in a series edited by Gaetano Cipolla of St. John’s University in the “Italian Poetry in Translation” series by Legas, The Bread and the Rose is a companion to volume 5 of the series, Serrao’s Cantalesia: Poems in the Neapolitan Dialect, translated by Bonaffini. The series is an important intellectual, cultural and editorial project — now twenty years strong — making available scholarship on Dante and the “minor” traditions of Molise, Padova, and dialect poetry. The Bread and the Rose is an ambitious tri-lingual work, covering five centuries of Neapolitan poetry chronologically and thematically with the original and the English translations facing each other on the same page and the Italian translation at the foot of the page. The reader can therefore either enjoy the poems on the own merits or spend some pleasurable time navigating the three linguistic registers while reflecting on all sorts of philological, etymological and cultural intricacies. Serrao’s useful introduction raises a number of pertinent questions while making no claim to being exhaustive. (For that, Serrao recommends De Mura’s Poeti napoletani dal Seicento a oggi, Napoli, Marotta Editore, 1977), where one can find “absolutely every poet born in Campania” (15). Serrao argues that this volume will forgo exhaustiveness in favor of the “exemplarity of the authors presented and in the concomitant certainty of their (esthetic) capacity to absorb the work of those excluded” (emphasis in the original).
