During the first few years of Amtrak, Southern’s Asheville service consisted of a daytime “turn” from Asheville to Salisbury and return. The train didn’t have convenient connections with Southern’s Washington - Atlanta trains in Salisbury, and consequently, it was lightly patronized. With the blessing of the North Carolina Public Service Commission, Southern replaced the Asheville - Salisbury train with what was in essence a regularly scheduled tourist train that made a daylight turn from Asheville to Old Fort and return. Southern resurrected the Skyland Special name for the Old Fort train, and it’s shown arriving in Old Fort in the late ‘70’s. Note the dome car on the end of the train.     MODELING DETAILS-SOUTHERN Reference Source: http://www.hosam.com/srr/srr.html Southern Check Digits 08/23/98 SEMRA list Not sure if I can make this simple but here goes: Southern used A, F, H, J, K, L, R, T, W & X on their engines. let us assign numbers to the above digits A=0, F=1, H=2, J=3, K=4, L=5, R=6,T=7, W=8 AND X=9. Take the engine number say 3971 which is an X. Add first number to 2 times the second number plus the third number plus 2 times the fourth number. 3+(2*9)+7+(2*1)= now this won’t work if the formula is applied straight away. If any result such as (2*9) which is 18 then you use the two digits in 18 as 1+8. Now the formula becomes 3+(1+8)+7+2=21. WE are not there yet. You subtract the answer from the next larger even number in units of 10. In this example this would be 30-21=9 OR X. Another example might be engine 701 which is a J. Since there are only 3 digits simply put a zero in front. This will give 0+(2*7)+0+(2*1)= 0+(1+4)+0+(2)=7 10-7=3 which is J. My grandfather on my mother's side came to this country and finally landed up in Kentucky in a little, small town. And my father came later. My grandfather landed at Ellis Island. My father landed in Boston maybe 6 or 8 years later, something like that. And not either one knowing any English. They corresponded with each other, how those things happened. And my grandfather was a miller by trade and this little town in Kentucky was near Somerset. And he told my father to come on down. And my mother had only been here about a year or two. My grandfather came first by himself. And, of course, in the old fashioned there was a made and they were married in 1903 in Cincinnati by somebody who was very much interested in all the Jewish people in that particular area. I: And your parents names were? EP: My parents names were entirely different than the English version, that's another story. My grandfather's name was Pilshman the last name. And my father's last name was Batlis. So after they came down they made this and I was born nine months to the day after they were married. I was born December 13, 1904. I was born in Somerset, Kentucky. And meanwhile my grandfather had, there's a picture there of my ancient uncles. My mother's not on that. There's one older sister, she wasn't on that picture too.
