PART II-City Bus Transportation, Gas Utilities, Telegraph Compames, Telephone Companies, Water Utilities. PART III-Motor Transport Division. PART IV-Electrical Utilities Division. 6 Part I RATE BUREAU PHYSICAL CONDITION OF RAILROADS Expenditures for maintenance of way and structures, reported by the South Carolina lines for the year 1968, indicate that the railroads serving the State are maintaining such properties in serviceable condition. The principal lines expended substantial sums for track materials, ballast, and :for track laying and surfacing. They installed 38,748 tons of new 132 pound rail, and 2,302,714 new treated wooden ties. Also installed during the year were 10,313 concrete ties. The smaller lines reported expenditures in this field apparently sufficient to maintain their roads in satisfactory condition to accommodate the traffic han­ dled over them. NEW EQUIPMENT Dnring 1968 the principal rail lines serving the State installed in service additional new equipment units. The Clinchfield installed 1 new diesel locomotive, 15 general service box cars, and 2 covered hoppers. The Seaboard Coast Line installed 25 new diesel locomotives, 738 general service box cars, 370 special service gondolas, 398 open top hoppers for general service, and 180 special service open top hoppers. The Southern Railway Company installed 30 diesel locomotives, 4,789 general service box cars, 84 special service box cars, 1,575 general service gondolas, 314 general service open top hoppers, 59 covered hoppers, and 278 special service flats. Some of the new equip­ ment installed in service was leased equipment, while other units were purchased outright by the lines. RAILROAD ABANDONMENTS AND EXTENSIONS In Finance Dockets Nos. 24959, 24960 and 24961, the Inter­ state Commerce Commission authorized abandonment of 7.47 miles of road of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Company, and its affiliates, between Bennettsville, S. C. and Gibson, N. C. With the merger of the former Atlantic Coast Line and the former Seaboard Air Line into the Seaboard Coast Line, an T alternate route between Bennettsville and Gibson was available via McColl. RAILROAD MERGERS In our last annual report we mentioned the pending applica­ tion before the Interstate Commerce Commission in Finance Docket No. 24880 of the proposed merger of the Piedmont and Northern Railway Company into the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Company. During the past year the ICC has approved the application in question and the merger was accomplished as of July 1, 1969. RAIL INCOME For the year ending December 31, 1968, seven (7) South Carolina rail lines reported deficits in "Net Railway Operating Income", and six (6) reported deficits in "Net Income after Fixed Charges and Other Deductions". Railway Operating Income is the result o£ operating the Company as a railroad, and reflects Railway Operating Income, less Railway Operating Expenses, less Railway

Take the engine number say 3971 which is an X. Add first number to 2 times the second number plus the third number plus 2 times the fourth number. 3+(2*9)+7+(2*1)= now this won’t work if the formula is applied straight away. If any result such as (2*9) which is 18 then you use the two digits in 18 as 1+8. Now the formula becomes 3+(1+8)+7+2=21. WE are not there yet. You subtract the answer from the next larger even number in units of 10. In this example this would be 30-21=9 OR X. Another example might be engine 701 which is a J. Since there are only 3 digits simply put a zero in front. This will give 0+(2*7)+0+(2*1)= 0+(1+4)+0+(2)=7 10-7=3 which is J. My grandfather on my mother's side came to this country and finally landed up in Kentucky in a little, small town. And my father came later. My grandfather landed at Ellis Island. My father landed in Boston maybe 6 or 8 years later, something like that. And not either one knowing any English. They corresponded with each other, how those things happened. And my grandfather was a miller by trade and this little town in Kentucky was near Somerset. And he told my father to come on down. And my mother had only been here about a year or two. My grandfather came first by himself. And, of course, in the old fashioned there was a made and they were married in 1903 in Cincinnati by somebody who was very much interested in all the Jewish people in that particular area. I: And your parents names were? EP: My parents names were entirely different than the English version, that's another story. My grandfather's name was Pilshman the last name. And my father's last name was Batlis. So after they came down they made this and I was born nine months to the day after they were married. I was born December 13, 1904. I was born in Somerset, Kentucky. And meanwhile my grandfather had, there's a picture there of my ancient uncles. My mother's not on that. There's one older sister, she wasn't on that picture too.

Herbert This chapter presents a brief retrospective of Woodland archaeology on North Carolina’s Coastal Plain conducted over the past quarter century with special attention to pottery, ceramic analysis, and future research. It begins with a survey of pottery sequences, reviews the contributions of several projects conducted since 1983, considers the implications of these findings for pottery typology, proposes a few possible solutions to some taxonomic inconsistencies, and identifies challenges and promising directions for future research. Only pottery types for which there is a reasonable amount of chronometric and geographic information are reviewed in the text. Formal type descriptions are referenced, but not provided, so readers are advised to consult original sources for those details. An abbreviated summary of all chronometric data for the Coastal Plain of North Carolina is presented in a table at the end of this chapter (Table 4-1). Much of this information was compiled in collaboration with the late Mark Mathis, NC-OSA. Subsequently I have tried to fill in the details and expand the database to include data published up to the time when this paper was compiled (winter 2009). For radiocarbon dates the contextual information was evaluated, but is included in the table only as a list of associated “target” pottery types.
