Relation of the Dorians to the Macedonians. 1. “From early times the Dorians and Ionians were the chief races of the Grecian nation; the latter of Pelasgic, the former of Hellenic origin; the latter an aboriginal people, the former a people much addicted to wandering. For the former, when under the dominion of Deucalion, dwelt in Phthiotis; and in the time of Dorus, the son of Hellen, they inhabited the country at the foot of Ossa and Olympus, which was called Hestiæotis. Afterwards, however, being driven from Hestiæotis by the Cadmeans, they dwelt under mount Pindus, and were called the Macednian nation. From thence they again migrated to Dryopis; and having passed from Dryopis into Peloponnesus, they were called the Doric race.” This connected account cannot be considered as derived immediately from ancient tradition; but can only be viewed as an attempt of the father of history to arrange and reconcile various legends. Nor indeed is it difficult to discover and examine the steps of the argument which led him to this conclusion.

BY C. D. EDMONDS. THE object of this paper is to endeavour to attach their right names to the ancient sites which lie close to the Peneios on either side of the river in its course from Trikkala to Larissa. The first site which we reach in travelling down stream is that of Palaeo-Gardiki, halfway between Trikkala and Zarkos, close to the high road, on the left bank of the river, which is here some six kilometres distant. On a small spur of the mountains, with which it is only con- nected by a narrow neck or spur which slopes down to the plain, lie the remains of an ancient acropolis with walls built of both polygonal and ashlar masonry.

Er zijn verschillende opvattingen over Geografie voorkomen in tweeën gedeeld en alle informatie die Strabo over ons deel van deze hun politieke organisatie; volgens sommigen zijn ze democratisch terwijl anderen zeggen dat elke volkeren schrijft verzameld. February 2019 Thessaloniki - Greece 2 ABSTRACT This dissertation was written as part of the MA in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History of Macedonia at the International Hellenic University. The horse and horsemen are common and very popular depictions in all aspects of art either in Thessaly or Macedonia. In this way, the horse was a basic element in agricultural labor and an important means of transportation until the first decades of the 20th century. Furthermore, horses were used in warfare and played a crucial role in many battles in Antiquity. They were connected to several deities and to chthonic cults during the same period. Numismatics, on the other hand, is one of the most valuable tools of archaeologists and historians for carrying out the task of unraveling the past. Through the coin types we can trace the political messages which the issuing authorities wanted to diffuse to the local and foreign user of the currency as well as the cultural and sociopolitical background of their territory. The present paper deals with the horse types on the coinages of the Thessalian and Macedonian region.
