Nikki Sudden had formed Swell Maps with his brother Epic Soundtracks back in the early ’70s, and their noisy DIY sound and spirit would go on to have a significant influence on post-punk and the following generations of alternative music. After disbanding in the early ’80s, Nikki Sudden joined forces with Dave Kusworth to form The Jacobites. “Fortune of Fame” is off the group’s first LP, Robespierre’s Velvet Basement (Glass Records). Brimming with urban despair but defiant in the face of it, the cut is perfect territory for The Versions to show off their own brand of rock and roll attitude. The Versions will be featured at this year’s Monkey Week Festival in Spain. -

The effervescence of New York's underground scene was contagious and spread to England with a 1976 tour of the Ramones that was artfully manipulated to start a fad (after the "100 Club Festival" of september 1976 that turned British punk-rock into a national phenomenon). In the USA the punk subculture was a combination of subterranean record industry and of teenage angst. In Britain it became a combination of fashion and of unemployment. Music in London had been a component of fashion since the times of the Swinging London (read: Rolling Stones). Punk-rock was first and foremost a fad that took over the Kingdom by storm. However, the social component was even stronger than in the USA: it was not only a generic malaise, it was a specific catastrophe. The iron rule of prime minister Margaret Thatcher had salvaged Britain from sliding into the Third World, but had caused devastation in the social fabric of the industrial cities, where unemployment and poverty reached unprecedented levels and racial tensions were brooding. -

Evolution: May 2018 versus May 2020 Autora Alicia Cabello Condón Director Alberto Castán Chocarro Grado en Periodismo Facultad de Filosofía y Letras Curso 2019 / 2020 [0] Resumen: El trap es uno de los géneros musicales que se ha visto envuelto en una mayor controversia durante los últimos años: apropiación cultural, machismo y todo un movimiento social escondido detrás del Auto-Tune, los hi hats y sus ritmos lentos en las bases. A pesar de ello, no es uno de los géneros más apreciados por los medios de comunicación españoles. En este trabajo se pretende un análisis acerca de la repercusión y evolución que este género tiene en el periodismo digital español. Para ello se han seleccionado dos de los medios más representativos en sus respectivos campos: por un lado como medio generalista el diario El País, y por otro, como una de las revistas digitales especializadas en música MondoSonoro. Se estudiarán estas cabeceras en sus respectivas versiones digitales durante el marco temporal establecido en mayo de 2018 y mayo de 2020 y se extraerán conclusiones acerca de la forma y el contenido que definen al trap en los medios de comunicación españoles. Highway Girl Nikki Sudden has been working on the songs found on Treasure Island since finishing his last proper album 1998’s Red Brocade. With a short list of around 40 numbers to choose from (many of which had been demoed in Bavaria and Berlin), Sudden and his band The Last Bandits (John Clifford Barry on bass and Stephane Doucerain on drums) assembled themselves for initial sessions in mid-2002. This motley group of expatriates who’d exiled themselves to Germany set up shop at John Rivers’WSRS studio in Leamington Spa, England, a home away from home where Sudden has recorded a vast majority of his work during his extensive 30- year career — which spans his pioneering early work as a founder of the Swell Maps (who released two critically acclaimed & highly influential full-lengths and a slew of singles), his albums with the revered Jacobites, over a dozen solo albums and the dark master- piece Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc, his 1987 collaboration with Rowland S.
