Lordi Killection
Lordi Killection Release January 31, 2020 Genre Hardrock / Heavy Metal Producer Studio Cover Artwork Mr. Lordi TIP Photographer Nobody knows exactly how old the Finish monsters really are or how long they’ve been striking terror into people’s hearts. Officially the Rock/Heavy Metal monsters LORDI were founded in 1992 by lead singer, songwriter, visual art designer and costume designer Mr. Lordi. The band has deep Finnish roots, originating from the city of Rovaniemi, in Lapland. In 2006 they celebrated their international breakthrough by winning the Eurovision Song Contest (“Hard Rock Hallelujah”) They are Finland’s only winners to date and they earned more points than any other artists in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest up to that time. But is it possible that this is only a pale misperception of our poor, small, pathetic reality? Is there, however unlikely it may seem, another truer reality? What if LORDI would have already been making music since the early 70's? And what if they have been releasing one hit single after the other since those times and now, almost 50 years later, are looking back on a full collection of songs that have been successful ever since? This is exactly the idea that LORDI are celebrating, or maybe a more appropriate word is executing, with their newest studio album “Killection.” Killection will be released on January 31st via AFM Records/Soulfood Music. Once more Mr Lordi, the master of the masquerade, presents us with one of his ideas, absurd and genius at the same time, and comes up with a concept that has never been done before in the music industry: "Killection" is a compilation album that simply says “what if” LORDI had been in existence since the early 70's. -

Goodbye Consett
GOODBYE CONSETT Excerpts from STORIES FROM A SONGWRITERS LIFE by Steve Thompson Cover image: Mark Mylchreest. Proof reading: Jim Harle (who still calls me Stevie). © 2020 Steve Thompson. All rights reserved. FOREWORD INTO THE UNKOWN By Trev Teasdel (Poet, author and historian) We almost thought of giving in Searching for that distant dream” Steve Thompson, Journey’s End. For a working-class man born in Consett, County Durham, UK apprenticed to the steel industry, with expectations only of the inevitable, Steve Thompson has managed to weld together, over 50 years, an amazing career as hit songwriter, musician, rock band leader, record producer, ideas man, raconteur, radio producer, community media mogul, workshop leader and much more. The world is full of unsung heroes, the people behind the scenes who pull the strings, spark ideas, write the material for others to sing and while Steve may be one of them, his songs at least have been well sung by some of the top artists in show business, and he’s worked alongside some of the top producers of the time. This is what this book is about – those songs that will be familiar to you even if you never knew who wrote them, the stories that lie behind them; the highs and lows, told with honesty, clarity and humour. There’s nothing highfalutin about Steve Thompson, he’s pulled himself up by his own bootstraps, achieved his dream, despite setbacks, and through it remains humble (if a little boastful – as you will see!), a staunchly people’s man with a wicked sense of humour (and I do mean wicked!). -
LISTEN: the Versions (CL) Drop Classic Jacobites' Cut “Fortune of Fame” Off Forthcoming Album, 'Calling Lucifer'
The Versions Nov 20, 2020 01:27 GMT LISTEN: The Versions (CL) drop classic Jacobites' cut “Fortune of Fame” off forthcoming album, 'Calling Lucifer' By Iggy PotNovember 19, 2020 The Versionshave a new cover ofThe Jacobites‘ (Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth) track“Fortune of Fame.” The cut is off the Chilean garage rock band’s upcoming Calling Lucifer LP due out November 26th onAlgo Records. Formed in 2004 by The Ganjas Samuel Maqueira and Aldo Benincasa, the forthcoming record will be their third release. Drawing on influences like the Flamin’ Groovies, Iggy Pop and James Williamson‘s Kill City LP, as well as Dogs d’amour, Calling Lucifer contains the aforementioned Jacobites’ cover and a version of the Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers‘ track “It’s Not Enough.” View embedded content here Reprobate Media · The Versions - Fortune Of Fame “Fortune of Fame”is one of those minor, forgotten classics. Nikki Sudden had formed Swell Maps with his brother Epic Soundtracks back in the early ’70s, and their noisy DIY sound and spirit would go on to have a significant influence on post-punk and the following generations of alternative music. After disbanding in the early ’80s, Nikki Sudden joined forces with Dave Kusworth to form The Jacobites. “Fortune of Fame” is off the group’s first LP, Robespierre’s Velvet Basement (Glass Records). Brimming with urban despair but defiant in the face of it, the cut is perfect territory for The Versions to show off their own brand of rock and roll attitude. The Versions will be featured at this year’s Monkey Week Festival in Spain. -

The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories. -

Originally released by Ace in 1974 In 1973 I was sharing a one-room bedsit in Camden with my girlfriend (now my wife) Kathy. The band I’d been with for the last 5 years since leaving home and going on the road had finally returned from Germany broke after having our equipment stolen. I reluctantly got a job cleaning cars at Henley’s Cars for the princely sum of 42 pence an hour. When the initial novelty of doing ‘real work’ with overalls and everything, wore off (after about a week) I was thoroughly miserable, apart from the fact that Kathy and I were madly in love. At some point I got a call from Tex Comer, the bass player in the aforementioned band. -

WOLE SOYINKA: Politics, Poetics and Postcolonialism
This page intentionally left blank WOLE SOYINKA Politics, Poetics and Postcolonialism Biodun Jeyifo examines the connections between the innovative and influential writings of Wole Soyinka and his radical politi- cal activism. Jeyifo carries out detailed analyses of Soyinka’s most ambitious works, relating them to the controversies generated by Soyinka’s use of literature and theatre for radical political purposes. He gives a fascinating account of the profound but paradoxical affinities and misgivings Soyinka has felt about the significance of the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century. Jeyifo also explores Soyinka’s works with regard to the impact on his artistic sensibilities of the pervasiveness of representational ambiguity and linguistic exuberance in Yoruba culture. The analyses and evalu- ations of this study are presented in the context of Soyinka’s sus- tained engagement with the violence of collective experience in post-independence, postcolonial Africa and the developing world. No existing study of Soyinka’s works and career has attempted such a systematic investigation of their complex relationship to politics. is Professor of English at Cornell University. He is the author of The Popular Travelling Theatre of Nigeria () and The Truthful Lie: Essays in a Radical Sociology of African Drama (). He has written essays and monographs on Anglophone African and Caribbean literatures, Marxist cultural theory and colonial and postcolonial studies and has also edited several volumes on African drama and critical discourse. Series editor: Professor Abiola Irele, Ohio State University Each volume in this unique series of critical studies will offer a comprehensive and in-depth account of the whole œuvre of one individual writer from Africa or the Caribbean, in such a way that the book may be considered a complete coverage of the writer’s expression up to the time the study is undertaken.
