"The in focus Panel discussion": Gas or Windmills: the silence of a lion?

Description: An interactive panel discussion with experts and decision makers to highlight the current challenges for the North Sea, and specifically for the Netherlands related to a mature basin producing largely gas, in an environment that has challenges with public image and support, an aging infrastructure and needs to change approach to take into account future costs of abandonment and results of O&G developments.

Gary Hays will moderate the session while the audience will also participate by voting on probing questions.

Panelist, and moderator biographies:

Moderator: Gary Hays

Gary was born in London, England but has lived for much of his life in The Netherlands. He has a technical background having a BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Physics. Gary worked for for many years, starting in technology managing different research & development groups.

His international HR roles at Shell include Global HR Manager in Shell Chemicals for 6 years and Graduate Recruitment Manager throughout . His business/line roles include: Technology Manager and General Director of three Shell Technology Centres simultaneously: Amsterdam, Louvain-la-Neuve Belgium and Singapore. In his last role at Shell as VP Strategy & VP HR for the Shell shared service network.

Since leaving Shell Gary and worked as European HR Director for Fonterra, New Zealand’s biggest company before living in Moscow for two years, working for one of Russia’s largest oil & gas companies TNK-BP, as Deputy VP HR & OD. He is now working for the Samruk-Kazyna Fund group of companies in Kazakhstan, collaborating closely with the national oil & gas company KazMunayGaz. In addition Gary has consulted for a number of companies including NIS (the Serbian national Oil & Gas company), TNT Post, the European Space Agency and for Allianz Global Investors in talent and leadership development and change processes, as well as regularly facilitating and moderating conferences.

Panelist: Jan-Willem Hoogstraten, Managing Director, TAQA the Netherlands

TAQA in the Netherlands is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA). The company is involved in the exploration, production, transportation and storage of oil and natural gas in the Netherlands. TAQA is leading the conversion of the depleted Bergermeer gas reservoir into Europe's largest and most advanced gas storage facility.

Jan Willem was appointed Country Manager and Managing Director of TAQA in the Netherlands in July 2010. Prior to joining TAQA, van Hoogstraten served as Drilling, Production and Commercial Manager at Wintershall (BASF) for 11 years. He started his career at Shell International and worked in a variety of roles and countries.

Van Hoogstraten has a Master’s degree (MSc) in Petroleum Engineering from Delft University of Technology. Furthermore he serves as Chairman of NOGEPA, the Dutch oil & gas association, as President of Gas Storage Netherlands, the representative organisation for underground natural gas storage facilities and as advisory board member on a number of renewable energy organizations such as the EnergyBoard and Energy Valley.

Panelist: Kees van Noort, senior energy analyst IEA

Kees is senior energy analyst at the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA). He is part of the team responsible for producing the World Energy Outlook series - the Agency's authoritative analysis of long-term global energy trends and challenges.

Previously, he worked 15 years in the upstream oil and gas industry with Shell in a variety of engineering, operations and management roles. He has a degree in Civil Engineering and one in Financial Economics.

Panelist: Karin Hoeing, Managing Director, Schlumberger UK

Karin is a German national and holds a degree of Diploma Geophysics (MSc Geophysics) from the University of Hamburg, Germany.

She joined Schlumberger in January 1996 as Junior Geophysicists and held various positions in line management, HR and marketing in Germany, Austria, UK, Malaysia, Romania and France. Her most recent posts included Vice President Wireline for Europe, and Caspian, Global HR manager for Schlumberger Information Solutions as well as Vice President Marketing and Sales for Europe and Africa before moving to Aberdeen as the Managing Director, Schlumberger UK in October 2013.

Since December 2013, Karin serves on the Schlumberger UK Board of Director.

Panelist: Alexander Kemp, professor of Petroleum Economics, U. of Aberdeen

Alexander is currently Professor of Petroleum Economics and Director of Aberdeen Centre for Research in Energy Economics and Finance (ACREEF) at the University of Aberdeen. For many years he has specialised in his research in petroleum economics with special reference to licensing and taxation issues and has published over 200 papers and books in this field. From 1993 to 2003 he was a member of the UK Government Energy Advisory Panel.

Professor Kemp is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was awarded the OBE in 2006 for services to the oil and gas industries. He has written The Official History of North Sea Oil and Gas which was published in 2011 in 2 volumes. In March 2012 Professor Kemp received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Society of Petroleum Engineers Offshore Achievements Awards ceremony. In September 2013 Professor Kemp was appointed a member of the Independent Oil and Gas Expert Commission by the Scottish Government whose report was published in June 2014.

Panelist: Berend Scheffers, director technology EBN

Berend is Director Technology at EBN. Currently his main area of focus is domestic exploration and production of natural gas, which will contribute significantly to the Dutch energy mix for the coming decades. The Technology department focusses on day-to-day support of the E&P assets and the execution of a longer term technology strategy trough roadmaps. The latter activity involves R&D activities and technology deployment along the whole E&P asset lifecycle (from exploration to decommissioning). Gas from unconventional reservoirs, geothermal energy and other gas and subsurface related topics also are subject of study.

From 1988 onwards he worked with the Netherlands Institute of Applied Geoscience TNO in various R&D and operational assignments. Still with TNO he was head of the advisory team to the Ministry of Economic Affairs with respect to license applications, the stewardship programme and soil movement risks. He was the founding director of the Shell, TUD and TNO co- operated R&D centre for smart fields ISAPP, in operation since 2004. In 2006 he worked for State Supervision of Mines, the Dutch E&P Industry supervisor, as chief inspector. This position made him responsible for supervision on rational development of oil&gas resources in the Netherlands. In 2007 he joined EBN as Technical Manager. Since 2011 he is part of the executive board of EBN.

Berend holds a MSc in Geophysics from Utrecht University (1987) and a PhD in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology (1993). He is a member of various professional societies including SPE, EAGE and SEG. He has been member of many national and international (advisory) committee’s on topics such as subsidence, induced seismicity, development of geothermal resources, and the future of Dutch gas production.
