Ang Chee Cheong together with the winning designers Tan Shin Bian and Ng Zhia Zhing.

HRH Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah expressed delight at the KL Chairs, commenting that the rattan weave technique employed gave it a traditional sense while set in a contemporary modern design. HRH also admired the solid construction of the chair while allowing for a very comfortable seating position. HRH related he was pleased to see such efforts to revive Malaysian craft and artistry amongst young Malaysian designers, and that such endeavours was close to his heart and in line with the objectives of Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor, a foundation which provides counsel, support and financial assistance to the youth to expand their potential skills and increase their self-confidence for their 10 future.

Tengku Zatashah shared that the Selangor Royal family has a deep appreciation for Malaysian designs. “We are delighted to support initiatives such as the KL Chair competition as it celebrates design excellence and provides Malaysians with a platform to showcase their creativity and innovative ideas. Most importantly, we’re pleased to know the proceeds will go to a noble cause,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the winning team, Tan gave credit to ‘Uncle Wong’ from Seremban for his collaboration and vital inputs, imparting the key lessons of rattan weaving, a time consuming and disappearing craft. She added, “We are truly honoured and humbled for this opportunity and we are motivated to do better for our local community and design fraternity.”

Ar. Ezumi thanked DYMM Sultan Selangor and the Selangor royal family for their generous gesture and strong support, and shared that he was hopeful that PAM and KLAF will continue its commitment in the advocacy, education and promotion of Malaysian architecture and design — enabling future local architects and designers opportunities to showcase their talents.
