Half day tour to cape Sounio

What a sight it must have been when the ancient Greek seafarers laid their eyes on the majestic Temple of Poseidon at the very tip of cape Sounio. Cape Sounio has been recognized since prehistoric times as a special place of worship, and was an important sanctuary during the Greek Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods. There are two sanctuaries present on the cape: the sanctuary of Poseidon and the sanctuary of Athena; two gods that were held in high esteem by the ancient Athenians. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron.

According to legend, Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeus , king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea.

The earliest literary reference to Sounion is in Homer 's poem the Odyssey, probably composed in the 8th century B.C. This recounts the mythical tribulations suffered by Greek hero Odysseus in a grueling 10-year sea-voyage to return to his native island, Ithaca in the Ionian Sea, from the sack of Troy. This ordeal was supposedly inflicted upon him by Poseidon, to whom the temple at Sounion was dedicated.

After the Acropolis, Delphi is the most popular archaeological site in Greece. Located 180 km from Athens, a trip to Delphi is listed in just about every tour programme and is by far the most popular day trip out of Athens. Delphi in ancient times was considered the centre of the known world, the place where heaven and earth met. This was the place on earth where man was closest to God. In Mythology, Delphi was the meeting place of two eagles, released by Zeus and sent in opposite directions. Where they met indicated the centre of the earth. Delphi is known as the centre of worship for the God Apollo, son of Zeus, who embodied moral discipline and spiritual clarity. There is so much history in Delphi one must make a visit to it once in their lives.

One day excursion to Mycenae and Epidavros

Mycenae 'Rich in Gold', the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, first sung by Homer in his epics, is the most important and richest palatial centre of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization, while the myths related to its history have inspired poets and writers over many centuries, from the Homeric epics and the great tragedies of the Classical period to contemporary literary and artistic creation.

In the peaceful surroundings of Epidaurus , with its mild climate and rich mineral springs, is the sanctuary of the god-physician Asklepios, the most famous healing centre of the Greek and Roman world. It is considered the birthplace of medicine and is thought to have had more than two hundred dependent spas in the eastern Mediterranean. Its monuments, true masterpieces of ancient Greek art, are a precious testimony to the practice of medicine in antiquity. Indeed they illustrate the development of medicine from the time when healing depended solely on the god until systematic description of cases and the gradual accumulation of knowledge and experience turned it into a science.
