  • It Was an Englishman, Louis S. Sanson, Who Designed and Developed the Interlagos Circuit, Which Opened Its Gates in 1940
It was an Englishman, Louis S. Sanson, who designed and developed the Interlagos circuit, which opened its gates in 1940. The area was sparsely populated at the time, close to the two great water reservoirs of the city (hence the name, ‘between the lakes’) and the plans were quite ambitious including a hotel and a spa. Only the circuit was built but, of course, not in its present configuration. On May 12 1940, the track was inaugurated with 7.900 meters by then. With nearly 15,000 spectators watching, Arthur Nascimento Jr. won the race driving an Alfa Romeo. Our very beloved Chico Landi arrived in second place driving a Maserati. He kept racing at the circuit until his retirement in 1974. The first international race was held in 1947 and the winner, the Italian Achille Varzi also drove an Alfa Romeo, Chico Landi arrived in second place in his Maserati. Thirty-two years after the first race, on March 30, 1972, fifty thousand spectators saw Carlos Reutemann win the first modern Formula 1 race at the Interlagos circuit in Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham. In the next year, Brazil definitely joined the selected group of countries on the calendar of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. Many people think that Interlagos made it possible for motorsport to develop in the country offering a world class circuit for the various new categories that needed a home. In 1980, the Brazilian Grand Prix moved to Rio de Janeiro seeking better conditions and there were rumors that Interlagos would be turned into a housing project.

  • The Orange Times
The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust June/July/August 2017, Issue #18 Motorsport Legend Greg Murphy is the Bruce McLaren Trust’s newest Patron Originally the Trust had three Patrons - Sir Tom Clark, Chris Amon OBE and Sir Colin Giltrap. Since Sir Tom’s death some years ago we have operated with just the two. Following Chris Amon’s sad passing last year, Howden Ganley agreed to become a Patron as well as maintaining his current role of Advisory Trustee. It was then decided that we would also like to go back to our original number of three Patrons and for all of us, the obvious choice was McLaren enthusiast and long-time friend and supporter, and motorsport legend in his own right, Greg Murphy. The role of Patron is defined as “a person chosen, named or honoured as a special guardian, protector or supporter” and there is no doubt that Greg fits into this role alongside Sir Colin Giltrap and Howden Ganley. When we approached Greg some months ago, his immediate response was that he would be honoured to act as a Patron for the Trust. With the move from Remuera down to our new premises at Hamptons Downs, we are therefore delighted to make this announcement and we look forward, in this our 20th year of operations, to having both Howden and Greg join us as Patrons alongside Sir Colin. • STATEMENT of PURPOSE the Purpose of the Historic Motor Sports
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The purpose of the Historic Motor Sports Association is to encourage the restoration, preservation and use of historic, sports and racing cars. Our events and races are for fun with nothing to be won. Satisfaction and camaraderie among friends is the reward. Our serious interest is in the cars. We want to see old cars with racing history RESTORED. Today many believe the term restore means, "...to make new". Webster says, "restore... to bring back to a former condition. We accept the latter. The enjoyment for us is in driving and experiencing the cars as they were. To support that we arrange our race groups by age and their engine size. Modern technology can make vast improvements in performance possible but that is not our desire and our rules are written with the intent to prevent such modification. We want the cars to be as they were not what they could have been. Restoration, Preservation and Use. Our events are not intended to offer individuals a "career option". There are other professional organizations which would be a better choice. HMSA is for the less driven (excuse the pun). Driving well is important, winning is not. Safety is very important and driving is a major contribution. Racing at any level can be dangerous. We, therefore, have rules and regulations which we hope will be helpful in making your participation both enjoyable and safe. As an overview, we divide safety into two categories: Car and Driver. An old car cannot be made as safe as a modern car. A McLaren with a monocoque tub is definitely safer in a crash than an M.G., Ferrari or Bugatti.
