The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust June/July/August 2017, Issue #18 Motorsport Legend Greg Murphy is the Bruce McLaren Trust’s newest Patron Originally the Trust had three Patrons - Sir Tom Clark, Chris Amon OBE and Sir Colin Giltrap. Since Sir Tom’s death some years ago we have operated with just the two. Following Chris Amon’s sad passing last year, Howden Ganley agreed to become a Patron as well as maintaining his current role of Advisory Trustee. It was then decided that we would also like to go back to our original number of three Patrons and for all of us, the obvious choice was McLaren enthusiast and long-time friend and supporter, and motorsport legend in his own right, Greg Murphy. The role of Patron is defined as “a person chosen, named or honoured as a special guardian, protector or supporter” and there is no doubt that Greg fits into this role alongside Sir Colin Giltrap and Howden Ganley. When we approached Greg some months ago, his immediate response was that he would be honoured to act as a Patron for the Trust. With the move from Remuera down to our new premises at Hamptons Downs, we are therefore delighted to make this announcement and we look forward, in this our 20th year of operations, to having both Howden and Greg join us as Patrons alongside Sir Colin. During his successful motorcycle racing career Harry’s sponsor and boss was none other than Tommy Atkins (High Efficiency Motors) until Harry packed up and went to work with Bruce and the race cars. With Harry’s passion for both motorbikes and race cars, an affinity with Bruce and ‘Pop’ McLaren was inevitable and, in effect, Harry was one of the early McLaren Old Boys. Eagle-eyed watchers of the new McLAREN documentary will spot Harry running out of the pits to congratulate Bruce after he won the Monaco Grand Prix – that same clip also shows Tommy Atkins. Another interesting clip in the documentary shows Bruce having fun riding up and down a residential street on a very old Indian motorbike. Sharing the fun and rides that day Stirling Moss and Bruce with Harry (on right) outside sister Pat’s home, was Harry and I can recall the hilarity as they rode up and down the street. When you hear of people winning prizes one always hopes that the winner is a worthy and appreciative recipient. In this instance we were absolutely delighted to see him at the Premiere and hear of Peter’s McLAREN win as he has been a huge Bruce fan all his life, a great friend of the Trust, and there is a very special connection between Peter and McLaren as you will read below. I was told to sit in the seat of Bruce's first Cooper Climax while my dad and his dad helped Bruce sort out some tuning problems with the motor. I also met Bruce at a Book Signing - Kenny, with Michael Clark couple of Ardmore GPs. I lost contact with him when while Max Rutherford chats with a young fan my father was killed racing Bruce's first car, the Austin 7 Ulster at the Ostrich Road hill climb in 1958. (I was 10 at the time). I met Bruce again at the first GP at Pukekohe in 1962, when I won a Slot Car competition held at John Courts department store on a track the same layout Peter with the orange 570.
