The Orange Times The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust June/July/August 2017, Issue #18 Motorsport Legend Greg Murphy is the Bruce McLaren Trust’s newest Patron Originally the Trust had three Patrons - Sir Tom Clark, Chris Amon OBE and Sir Colin Giltrap. Since Sir Tom’s death some years ago we have operated with just the two. Following Chris Amon’s sad passing last year, Howden Ganley agreed to become a Patron as well as maintaining his current role of Advisory Trustee. It was then decided that we would also like to go back to our original number of three Patrons and for all of us, the obvious choice was McLaren enthusiast and long-time friend and supporter, and motorsport legend in his own right, Greg Murphy. The role of Patron is defined as “a person chosen, named or honoured as a special guardian, protector or supporter” and there is no doubt that Greg fits into this role alongside Sir Colin Giltrap and Howden Ganley. When we approached Greg some months ago, his immediate response was that he would be honoured to act as a Patron for the Trust. With the move from Remuera down to our new premises at Hamptons Downs, we are therefore delighted to make this announcement and we look forward, in this our 20th year of operations, to having both Howden and Greg join us as Patrons alongside Sir Colin. Eagle-eyed watchers of the new McLAREN documentary will spot Harry running out of the pits to congratulate Bruce after he won the Monaco Grand Prix – that same clip also shows Tommy Atkins. When you hear of people winning prizes one always hopes that the winner is a worthy and appreciative recipient. In this instance we were absolutely delighted to see him at the Premiere and hear of Peter’s McLAREN win as he has been a huge Bruce fan all his life, a great friend of the Trust, and there is a very special connection between Peter and McLaren as you will read below. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: Barby MacGowan, Media Pro Int'l for General Racing, Ltd. , McLaren Will be Featured Marque for 2011 SONOMA, CALIF. (June 6, 2010) – At the conclusion of an epic first-annual Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival , organizer General Racing, Ltd . announced that McLaren will be the event’s featured marque for the event’s second edition in 2011. The legendary name has graced the halls of motorsports since its famed founder Bruce McLaren of New Zealand founded the McLaren racing team in 1963. “McLaren, like Ferrari and Porsche and other great names in motorsports, created the bloodlines that we worship today in historic automobile racing,” said General Racing’s President Steve Earle, who for four decades has devoted his life to organizing historic car racing events and is the originator of the Wine Country Classic that preceded the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival for 24 years. “Choosing McLaren as our marque means we will pay special tribute to the name, the teams, and the cars that McLaren has produced in the past and will produce in the future, adding another dimension of enjoyment for both competitors and spectators.” The 2010 Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival, held at Infineon Raceway June 5-6, hosted 375 historic race cars, some dating as far back as 1915, in a series of “time capsule” races over the weekend of June 5-6. “These beautiful machines on the track combined with the Sonoma wine country experience makes our historic car weekend unlike anything else on our schedule,” said Infineon Raceway President and General Manager Steve Page.

The McLaren family and Jack have shared a wonderful life-long friendship, starting with watching his early racing days in New Zealand, then Pop McLaren purchasing the Bobtail Cooper from Jack after the NZ summer racing season of 1957. For the following season of 1958, Jack made the McLaren Service Station in Remuera his base and brought the second Cooper with him from the UK for Bruce to drive in the NZIGP which culminated in Bruce being awarded the Celebrating 50 Years of “Driver to Europe”. Jack became his mentor and close friend and by 1959 McLaren Racing Bruce joined him as teammate for the Cooper Racing Team. The rest, as we say, is history but the friendship lived on and the BM Trust Following on from their Tasman Series was delighted to host Jack in New Zealand for a week of motorsport memories success, the fledgling BMMR Team set about in 2003 with Jack requesting that the priority of the trip was to be a visit to their very first sports car race with the Zerex see his “NZ Mum” Ruth McLaren, who, by then, was a sprightly 97 years old. th Special – on April 11 1964 at Oulton Park and I shared a very special hour with the two of them together and the love and this was a DNF/oil pressure.
