2 SEA GRANT NETWORK MEETING | Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan OUR GOAL FOR

RETHINK. REFUSE. REDUCE. REUSE. RECYCLE. We are determined to create minimal waste at this year’s regional network meeting. In order to meet our zero waste goal, we have taken a number of steps that we need your help implementing before, during, and after the conference. Help us help the planet! For example, the planning committee has collaborated with the hotel to eliminate single use plastics from the event, maximize availability of reusable materials, and separate out compostable waste during breakfast that can be delivered to local farms and facilities. We intentionally did not print copies of this program, and we have schedules posted around the event to help you make your way to sessions on time. We encourage you to take these simple steps to reduce waste at the meeting: • Use your own name tag, water bottle, and coffee/tea container/mug. • Take advantage of the cloud for document sharing. • Refuse straws at restaurants and bars. • Recycle as much paper and plastic as possible at the lobby Recycling Center. • Place the “Do Not Disturb” sign on your hotel room door so your room will not be serviced, and towels and sheets will not be changed unless absolutely necessary. #ZeroWaste

HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS IN THE GREAT LAKES BASIN: A PERSPECTIVE FROM OHIO AND UPDATES ON STATE PROGRAM ACTIVITIES TO IDENTIFY REGIONAL SYNERGIES Organizers: Kris Stepenuck (LCSG) and Jesse Lepak (NYSG) Harmful algal blooms are an important water resource issue in the Great Lakes basin. Longevity and intensity of blooms has been increasing in the region, and this has negatively impacted water quality and usage by stakeholders. In some extreme cases, HABs have had direct effects on drinking water sources. Sea Grant’s Water Resources Visioning Team developed a set of six strategic priorities. Under Strategic Priority 1 – maintain and enhance water quality and public access to support healthy coastal ecosystems and human uses – an action was identified to determine upstream sources of nutrients contributing to harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Great Lakes and other aquatic systems, and working regionally to implement nutrient and runoff reduction strategies and increase impact in research (mechanisms, prediction, and monitoring) and extension efforts.

11 GREAT LAKES SEA GRANT NETWORK MEETING | Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan This session is designed to gain insight about relatively well-studied HABs in Lake Erie from the perspective of Ohio Sea Grant, and for other Great Lakes Sea Grant Programs to share their experiences and activities relevant to HABs. In doing so, we hope to identify collaborative and synergistic opportunities to better address, monitor, understand, and predict HABs in the region. Session agenda (PDF) Location: Portage Room

SEA GRANT’S ROLE IN THE BLUE ECONOMY Organizers: Caitie Nigrelli (IISG), Chris Ellis (NOAA), and Chiara Zuccarino-Crowe (MISG) The Great Lakes coastal communities that Sea Grant serves are well-poised as a focal point for accelerating the Blue Economy. A short presentation will provide information on what the Blue Economy is and current regional efforts to coordinate initiatives. Attendees are encouraged to participate in a facilitated discussion to recognize contributions that Great Lakes Sea Grant programs and specialists are making to the Blue Economy, identify outreach and research gaps that Great Lakes Sea Grant could help fill, and brainstorm opportunities for regional collaboration to advance water‐related economic activities in the Great Lakes region. Session agenda (PDF) Location: Macarthur Room

GREAT LAKES SEA GRANT AQUACULTURE COLLABORATIVE - WORKING MEETING Organizer: Don Schreiner (MNSG) and John Downing (MNSG) The Aquaculture Collaborative will meet to discuss proposed activities and update partners on the status of the project. This gathering will serve as the project launch meeting where a review of the work plan and associated responsibilities will be discussed. If time permits, the discussion will be complemented by a round table/lighting round among attendees from each Sea Grant program to report out on important aquaculture initiatives in each state. We will include a discussion about ongoing opportunities to collaborate across watersheds. Location: Osborn Room

13 GREAT LAKES SEA GRANT NETWORK MEETING | Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES FACING HIGH WATER LEVEL EVENTS Organizers: Mary Austerman (NYSG), Mark Breederland (MISG), Chiara Zuccarino-Crowe (MISG) The recent record-breaking high water levels and associated flooding have impacted communities across the Great Lakes. This session will provide an overview of the conditions and a recap of how GLSG programs responded by collaborating with partners to serve communities through informational seminars, research, and product development. We will also discuss the upcoming water levels outlook in coming years and discuss prospective areas of collaboration to share best practices, develop partnerships, and leverage existing tools. Location: Portage Room

COOPERATIVE SCIENCE AND MONITORING INITIATIVE - WORKING MEETING Organizers: Paris Collingsworth and Kristin Tepas (IISG) This meeting will be a group discussion on Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI) outreach. Those who have been involved in CSMI or plan to be in the coming years are encouraged to attend. We have new (five-year) funding on the horizon, therefore this is a good time to debrief about what worked, what didn’t work, and successes and/or failures over the past couple years of CSMI outreach. We’ll then consider the future direction of the programming and discuss the best path forward for the most impactful outreach in the coming five years. Location: Captains Lounge

10:45am-12:15pm, Concurrent Sessions

WEATHER AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE Organizers: Mary Austerman (NYSG), Sara Stahlman (PASG), Roy Widrig (NYSG) Faced with a growing risk of weather and climate related disasters (ex: severe storms, high/ low water levels in the Great Lakes, etc.) that can set back economic and social development in communities, the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network is positioned to spearhead adaptation projects and tools that will improve the region’s resilience to these impacts. Sea Grant has a long- standing reputation for collaboratively developing tools and projects that improve the ability of stakeholders to prepare, respond and recover from coastal hazards, specifically those that relate to weather and climate. What takeaways from these events can drive resilience across the Great Lakes Basin despite different levels of risk perception and activity? What is working? Where do challenges remain? How can we learn from each other?

14 GREAT LAKES SEA GRANT NETWORK MEETING | Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan This session will feature presentations of 4 weather/climate resilience tools/projects led by members of the GLSGN that have been voted on as top priority through the network. After the presentations, a panel discussion will provide insights on lessons learned as well as allow for group discussion about climate and weather resilience in the Great Lakes, followed by a tour of the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network’s Weather and Climate Resilience Storymap, which will highlight all Sea Grant climate and weather related projects happening throughout the region. Location: Macarthur Room

SEA GRANT AND GREAT LAKES FISHERIES Organizer: Titus Seilheimer (WISG) Partnerships within Sea Grant and between Sea Grant and other agencies are the key to successful impacts in the Great Lakes. Join the region’s fisheries specialists as we discuss current activities and opportunities for future collaborations in fisheries across the network, such as how are we currently partnering with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and how can we build that capacity. We will also discuss if we are reaching key stakeholder groups, like charter captains, and how we can improve those relationships. Location: Osborn Room

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - SOCIAL SCIENCE THINK TANK: REAL GUIDANCE FOR REAL PROJECTS Organizers: Chris Ellis (NOAA-OCM) and Caitie Nigrelli (IISG) The social sciences are a valuable but often overlooked or misunderstood element of coastal management. Issues from marsh restoration to flood mitigation all involve critical human elements— knowledge, values, and attitudes—of the people that live, work, and play in these areas. The purpose of this session is for folks with social science-based projects, whether planned, in action, or just contemplating ideas for someday. Discussion examples could include project planning, survey review, guidance on social methods, human sampling strategies, and stakeholder analysis. Space is limited, so please plan ahead by signing up at the registration desk for a 30-minute block of time. Location: Portage Room
