  • A Study of Violence-Related Deaths in Nafada Local Government Area Of
    # Makai DANIEL http://www.ifra-nigeria.org/IMG/pdf/violence-related-deaths-gombe-jigawa-state-nigeria.pdf A Study of Violence-Related Deaths in Nafada Local Government Area of Gombe State and Auyo, Gagarawa, Gumel, Gwiwa, Kaugama and Yankwasi Local Government Areas of Jigawa State (2006-2014) IFRA-Nigeria working papers series, n°46 20/01/2015 The ‘Invisible Violence’ Project Based in the premises of the French Institute for Research in Africa on the campus of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria Watch is a database project that has monitored fatal incidents and human security in Nigeria since 1 June 2006. The database compiles violent deaths on a daily basis, including fatalities resulting from accidents. It relies on a thorough reading of the Nigerian press (15 dailies & weeklies) and reports from human rights organisations. The two main objectives are to identify dangerous areas and assess the evolution of violence in the country. However, violence is not always reported by the media, especially in remote rural areas that are difficult to access. Hence, in the last 8 years, Nigeria Watch has not recorded any report of fatal incidents in some of the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the Nigerian Federation. There are two possibilities: either these places were very peaceful, or they were not covered by the media. This series of surveys thus investigates ‘invisible’ violence. By 1 November 2014, there were still 23 LGAs with no report of fatal incidents in the Nigeria Watch database: Udung Uko and Urue-Offong/Oruko (Akwa Ibom), Kwaya Kusar (Borno), Nafada (Gombe), Auyo, Gagarawa, Kaugama and Yankwashi (Jigawa), Ingawa and Matazu (Katsina), Sakaba (Kebbi), Bassa, Igalamela- Odolu and Mopa-Muro (Kogi), Toto (Nassarawa), Ifedayo (Osun), Gudu and Gwadabaw (Sokoto), Ussa (Taraba), and Karasuwa, Machina, Nguru and Yunusari (Yobe).

  • Maternal Mortality in Jigawa Central Senatorial District: Trend and Causes
International Journal of Management and Applied Science, ISSN: 2394-7926 Volume-3, Issue-8, Aug.-2017 http://iraj.in MATERNAL MORTALITY IN JIGAWA CENTRAL SENATORIAL DISTRICT: TREND AND CAUSES MUHAMMAD ABDULKADIR School of preliminary studies Sule lamido university, Kafin hausa Email: [email protected] Abstract: The study examines the spatio temporal pattern of maternal deaths in Jigawa Central Senatorial District of Jigawa State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study include: to determinethe temporal trend and spatial pattern of maternal death and maternal mortality ratio and to identify the common cases of maternal deaths. Hospital based data for the period of five years, from 2010 to 2014 were obtained from General Hospitals, Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kudu and Rasheed Shekoni Specialist Hospital Dutse. Descriptive and inferential statistics(X2 and two way Anova) as well as geographical information system were used for the data analysis. The finding shows that the maternal deaths keep on increasing until in 2014 the figure decline. The 861/100,000 was estimated for the whole five periods, 2014 with the 3,654 per 100,000. The MMR computed for the seven LGA in the study area shows that Birnin Kudu has 1,624 deaths per 100,000, Buji LGA with the 213 death per 100,000 and Miga has 94 deaths per 10,000 which is the lowest. The major obstetric causes of maternal deaths are identified to be anaemia, eclampsia, malaria in pregnancy, PPH and retained placenta. Anaemia is the most important common cause of maternal death in the Jigawa central senatorial district. The finding further gives the recommendation: special attention should be given to the leading causes of maternal deaths.

  • Geo-Electric Investigation of Aquifer Characteristics and Ground Water Potential in Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State, Nigeria
Geo-Electric Investigation of Aquifer Characteristics and Ground Water Potential in Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State, Nigeria Suleiman B.A1*, Idris, M.C.1, & Shitu I.G.1 1Department of Physics, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, Jigawa, Nigeria. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this paper, a geoelectrical study using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) technique of Schlumberger Array was carried out in Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State, Nigeria with a view to determining groundwater potentials and aquifer characteristics of the study area. During the study, the half current electrode separation (AB/2) ranged from 1.0 to 100mwhile the half potential electrode spread (MN/2) varied from 0.2 to 8.0 metres. A total of thirty-two (32) soundings were conducted using Alied Ohmega Terrameter. The data acquired has been processed and interpreted using IPI2winand Surfer software. The results of the study show three to five geoelectrical layers corresponding to clay, sandy clay, clayey sand, medium-coarse grained sand and coarse-grained sand, The result further reveal that VES 4, 5, 8, 14, 16, 19, 21, 23, 24 and 25 have thicknesses of 48.04m, 22.3m, 21.2m, 20.6m, 26.33m, 21.9m, 20.7m, 22.6m, 54.8m, and 19.1m and depths of 62.27m, 24.2m, 24.6m, 26.5m, 30.64m, 26.2m, 33.7m, 33.5m, 56.9m, and 22.4m, respectively. These VES locations constitute good aquifer zones and are therefore recommended for drilling of boreholes having moderate to high yields. VES 17 and 29, however, did not meet the hydro geophysical conditions for occurrence of groundwater within the vicinities of the VES point and are thus not recommended for drilling.
