The 2013 -2014 Annual School Census (ASC) is the continuous compliance to the decisions reached at 54th National Council on Education (NCE) meeting held at Katsina which urge States and FCT to finance and conduct the ASC. It is also one of the main tools of providing information to assess progress in the implementation of the State Education Sector Plan (SESP) using a set of monitoring indicators. The result is this Annual School Census Statistical Report (ASCSR). This analytical report, presents the findings of the 2013-2014 ASC. I am certain that the report will serve as an authentic source of information on the status of education in Jigawa State. It is hoped that stakeholders will use the information provided for planning and decision making. The Ministry is grateful to our development partners, Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN) for the technical support given to education sector in the state. I wish to congratulate the State EMIS Committee, Planning Departments of State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (SMoEST), State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), other parastatals and stakeholders at all levels who contributed towards the conduct of the school census and the preparation of this report. Prof. Haruna Wakili Honourable Commissioner Jigawa State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology June, 2014 iii Jigawa State Annual School Census Report 2013/2014 Acknowledgements The efforts put in to assemble the 2013/2014 Annual Schools Census (ASC) which will provide statistical information on pre-primary, primary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools in Jigawa State through a single data collection conducted in November 2013, together with other exertions that culminated in this publication imply that a wide range of individuals, groups, and organizations made invaluable contributions. Some have contributed in reviewing the existing questionnaires to enable the instruments capture specific peculiarities of the state. Specific mention must be made of the Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN) which provided technical advice, funded the training, logistics for printing the questionnaires and ensured their delivery to the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Local Government Education Authorities (LGAs). The success of the data collection stage at the school level was a demonstration of the type of cooperation which is desired of the relevant state agencies: the State EMIS Committee made up of representatives of the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, SUBEB, Education Secretaries, Private school Proprietors Association, State Agencies, Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All (CSACEFA), Federal Inspectorate Services office in the State, Head Teachers of primary schools and Principals of secondary schools. The SUBEB and MOEST are immensely grateful for their invaluable contributions. At the stage of data analysis, the staff of the EMIS unit at SUBEB and MOEST demonstrated high professional competence in developing extensive education indicators and statistical reports which formed the bulk of this publication. This level of contribution is unprecedented. The SUBEB and MOEST provided computer facilities for data inputting as well as guidance during data analysis and report writing. These immense support and contribution is acknowledged with optimum appreciation.
