Jeff Kirkendall’s Thoughts For The Month Column Thoughts, Opinions, Reviews, Commentary & More! Hello and Welcome! My name is Jeff Kirkendall and I'm an independent filmmaker and actor from the Upstate New York area. This is the section of the Very Scary Productions website where I write about topics related to independent filmmaking, digital video production, acting, movies in general, horror movies in particular, my own indie movies, as well as anything and everything related or in between. I decided to create this commentary page because I find that I often come across things that either interest me, excite me, intrigue me, or maybe just bug me. Any topic related to movies and cinema is fair game, from the most mainstream to the most controversial. For example I'll often read about movie projects that I have a strong interest in or opinion on, for one reason or another. This page gives me a forum to discuss these things. It's all about discussion and furthering understanding of our pop culture. Anyone who has feedback concerning what I have to say here, feel free to contact me (see the contact link at http://www.veryscaryproductions.com/). I'd also like to point out that the following is just my opinion, and everyone is free to agree or disagree with what I have to say. Enjoy, and to all the Indies out there: Keep on Filming! SUBJECT: Movie Review – The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (documentary) Note: The following review of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters may contain details that could be considered spoilers.

  • Concert Review: Symphony Help Breathe Life Into Video Games | Deseret News
11/23/2016 Concert review: Symphony help breathe life into video games | Deseret News Family Concert review: Symphony help breathe life into video games By Scott Iwasaki Published: March 29, 2008 12:00 a.m. "VIDEO GAMES LIVE!" Utah Symphony, Abravanel Hall, Friday, additional performance today, 355-2787 With strobe lights, a big video screen, mirror balls and an electric guitar, it was clear that "Video Games Live!" is not a typical symphony concert. And to have the Utah Symphony give two acts of video-game music life in a place other than the TV was nothing short of a rush. By the end of the show, the symphony did exactly what narrator and game composer and "Video Game Live!" co-founder Tommy Tallarico said it would do — "Show how culturally significant video games and video game music is in the world today." Conducted by video-game-music composer and "Video Game Live!" co-founder Jack Wall, the symphony, aided by the Snow College Choir, took the nearly sold-out audience on a journey from the early days of video gaming to the present. Kicking off the evening with the "blip-bleep" of "Pong" and ending with a rousing crescendo of "Final Fantasy VII," the concert brought old and young gamers together. With a symphonic suite, the concert highlighted pioneering games such as "Donkey Kong," "Dragon's Lair," "Tetris," "Frogger" and "Space Invaders," to name a few. In keeping with the "Space Invaders" theme, Tallarico chose a member from the audience to play a giant screen version of the game while the symphony performed the theme.

  • Pioneering E-Sport: the Experience Economy and the Marketing of Early 1980S Arcade Gaming Contests
International Journal of Communication 7 (2013), 2254-2274 1932–8036/20130005 Pioneering E-Sport: The Experience Economy and the Marketing of Early 1980s Arcade Gaming Contests MICHAEL BOROWY DAL YONG JIN Simon Fraser University This article sets out to historicize the development of e-sport (organized competitive digital gaming) in the early 1980s using three new conceptual frameworks. We identify e-sport as an accompaniment of the broader embryonic gamer culture, a hallmark of the “experience economy” concept, and as a succession of consumer practices whose development was coterminous with the rise of event marketing as a leading promotional business strategy. By examining the origins of e-sport as both a marketized event and experiential commodity, we see this period as a transitory era bridging different phases in the areas of sports, marketing, and technology, resulting in the expansion of competitive cyberathleticism. Keywords: e-sport, professional gamer, arcade, experience economy, event marketing, video games, public events Introduction In the early 2000s, competitive player-versus-player digital game play (henceforth e-sports) has been a heavily promoted feature of overall gamer culture. Although e-sport—known as an electronic sport and the leagues in which players compete through networked games and related activities (Jin, 2010)— has existed since the early 1980s, the increased attention toward the activity in the 21st century has signaled that the gaming industry is adopting more flexible avenues of public event consumption with the goal of generating higher profit margins. While stand-alone e-sports events are common, their use as adjuncts of other industry events, including major trade shows, press conferences, and even traveling orchestras, demonstrates that competitive gaming continues to play a major role in the machinery of game industry event marketing.

  • Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play a Dissertation
The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play A dissertation presented to the faculty of the Scripps College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Todd L. Harper November 2010 © 2010 Todd L. Harper. All Rights Reserved. This dissertation titled The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play by TODD L. HARPER has been approved for the School of Media Arts and Studies and the Scripps College of Communication by Mia L. Consalvo Associate Professor of Media Arts and Studies Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT HARPER, TODD L., Ph.D., November 2010, Mass Communications The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play (244 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Mia L. Consalvo This dissertation draws on feminist theory – specifically, performance and performativity – to explore how digital game players construct the game experience and social play. Scholarship in game studies has established the formal aspects of a game as being a combination of its rules and the fiction or narrative that contextualizes those rules. The question remains, how do the ways people play games influence what makes up a game, and how those players understand themselves as players and as social actors through the gaming experience? Taking a qualitative approach, this study explored players of fighting games: competitive games of one-on-one combat. Specifically, it combined observations at the Evolution fighting game tournament in July, 2009 and in-depth interviews with fighting game enthusiasts. In addition, three groups of college students with varying histories and experiences with games were observed playing both competitive and cooperative games together.

  • Certificate for Approving the Dissertation
MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School Certificate for Approving the Dissertation We hereby approve the Dissertation of Kevin J. Rutherford Candidate for the Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Director (Jason Palmeri) Reader (Michele Simmons) Reader (Heidi McKee) Reader (Kate Ronald) Graduate School Representative (Bo Brinkman) ABSTRACT PACK YOUR THINGS AND GO: BRINGING OBJECTS TO THE FORE IN RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION by Kevin J. Rutherford This dissertation project focuses on object-oriented rhetoric (OOR), a perspective that questions the traditional notions of rhetorical action as solely a human province. The project makes three major, interrelated claims: that OOR provides a unique and productive methodology to examine the inclusion of the non-human in rhetorical study; that to some extent, rhetoric has always been interested in the way nonhuman objects interact with humans; and that these claims have profound implications for our activities as teachers and scholars. Chapter one situates OOR within current scholarship in composition and rhetoric, arguing that it can serve as a useful methodology for the field despite rhetoric’s traditional focus on epistemology and human symbolic action. Chapter two examines rhetorical history to demonstrate that a view of rhetoric that includes nonhuman actors is not new, but has often been marginalized. Chapter three examines two videogames as sites of theory and practice for object-oriented rhetoric, specifically focusing on a sense of metaphor to understand the experience of nonhuman rhetors. Chapter four interrogates the network surrounding a review aggregation website to argue that, while some nonhumans may be unhelpful rhetorical collaborators, OOR can assist us in improving relationships with them.

  • Game Narrative Review
Journey: Game Narrative Review ==================== Your name: Lauryn Gordon Your school: SMU Guildhall Your email: [email protected] Month/Year you submitted this review: November 2015 ==================== Game Title: Journey Platform: PS3 (eventual PS4) Genre: Adventure/Art Game Release Date: March 13, 2012 (PSN-NA); August 28, 2012 (Retail-NA) Developer: thatgamecompany; Tricky Pixels (eventual PS4 port) Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment Game Director: Jenova Chan Overview Journey is a multiplayer game that tells the story of two anonymously paired online players struggling to survive a harsh and beautiful world. Each player begins as a small, red-cloaked figure with only the ability to run. After receiving their first scarf piece, players learn to fly and shout a musical sound. Unlike traditional adventure games, Journey has no leveling up, no in-game dialogue, and no skills system. Players rely on their ability to communicate through sound and flight to overcome puzzles in each level. The story of Journey is the story of player’s interactions. Journey’s anonymously pair system provides players a unique cooperative, storytelling experience. The designers of Journey intended players to play with another person. Still, both single-player and multi-player Journey exemplify how games can tell stories through players’ interactions with the world around them. Combining a limited controls scheme with the human need to communicate, Journey is the strongest example of a game where playing the game is the story. Every element in Journey supports the idea that narrative in a game is there to service the player’s experience of that game, not supplant it. Journey does not tell the story of the characters in their world.
