Unit 8 God Takes Care of Me Lesson 1: A Whale of a Tale Lesson 2: Daniel and the Lions’ Den Lesson 3: Paul and Silas Lesson 4: Elijah and the Ravens Lesson 1 A Whale of a Tale God takes care of us every day. Sometimes in little ways we don’t even notice. Sometimes God does amazing things to take care of us too! Everyone say “God takes care of me!” In the Bible, God took care of a man named Jonah. Jonah was a prophet of God. Prophets tell God’s people messages from God. God tells prophets what to tell the people. One day, God gave Jonah a message for the wicked people of Nineveh. They would be punished if they did not stop doing bad things. Jonah didn’t want to go to Ninevah with God’s message. He got on a boat that was going far away. story continues on the next page 2 3 Lesson 1 A Whale of a Tale Jonah sailed away on the boat, but God sent a big storm. Jonah knew the storm would sink the boat if he didn’t get out of the boat. To stop the storm, the sailors threw Jonah over the side of the boat. Everyone hold your breath and try to swim! But Jonah did not drown in the waves! Jonah prayed to God. God sent a whale to swallow Jonah. Jonah stayed alive in the belly of the whale for three days and three nights. Everyone hold up three fingers! God took care of Jonah and kept him safe.

  • Resurrection Or Miraculous Cures? the Elijah and Elisha Narrative Against Its Ancient Near Eastern Background
Bar, “Resurrection or Miraculous Cures?” OTE 24/1 (2011): 9-18 9 Resurrection or Miraculous Cures? The Elijah and Elisha Narrative Against its Ancient Near Eastern Background SHAUL BAR (UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS) ABSTRACT The Elijah and Elisha cycles have similar stories where the prophet brings a dead child back to life. In addition, in the Elisha story, a corpse is thrown into the prophet’s grave; when it comes into con- tact with one of his bones, the man returns to life. Thus the question is do these stories allude to resurrection, or “only” miraculous cures? What was the purpose of the inclusion of these stories and what message did they convey? In this paper we will show that these are legends that were intended to lend greater credence to prophetic activity and to indicate the Lord’s power over death. A INTRODUCTION There is consensus among scholars that Dan 12:2-3, which they assign to the 1 second century B.C.E., refers to the resurrection of the dead. The question be- comes whether biblical texts earlier than this era allude to this doctrine. The phrase “resurrection of the dead” never appears in the Bible. Scholars searching for biblical allusions to resurrection have cited various idioms.2 They list verbs including “arise,”3 “wake up,”4 and “live,”5 all of which can denote a return to life. We also find “take,”6 which refers to being taken to Heaven, the noun “life,”7 and “see.”8 In the present paper however, we shall examine the stories of the Elijah and Elisha cycles which include similar tales in which the prophet brings a dead child back to life: in Elijah’s case, the son of the widow of Zare- phath (1 Kgs 17:17-24); in Elisha’s, the son of the Shunammite matron (2 Kgs 4:31-37).

Lawrence Raful Professor of Law Elijah the Prophet lived in Israel during the ninth and 10th century BCE (Before Common Era). Although his name does not grace the title of any of the biblical books of the major and minor prophets, throughout the ages he has become the central figure in Jewish traditions, a mysterious and beloved “everyman.” Elijah, in various disguises and roles, works for justice and performs miracles to help the poor and downtrodden. He is best known as part of an important ritual in the Passover meal, and he is said to be present at births and weddings. But Elijah’s most prominent role, perhaps the major reason that he has become so popular, is as the precursor, the forerunner, of the coming of the Messiah (see Malachi 3:24). It is for this reason that Jews everywhere greet the end of the Sabbath day and the beginning of a new week with a prayer that, God willing, Elijah the Prophet will appear this week, to herald the coming of the Messianic era.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BOOK OF JONAH BOTTOM LINE INTRODUCTION THIS BOOK CONTAINS THE BIGGEST FISH STORY OF ALL TIME. BUT IT ISN’T WHAT YOU THINK IT IS. Almost everyone has heard the story of the huge sea creature that swallowed Jonah, and about Jonah’s pitiful prayer for deliverance while inside its stomach (ch. 1-2). But the real fish story takes place in chapter 3. To understand this, consider an event that would transpire some seven centuries later in northern Israel: “And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him” (Mt. 4:18-20). In this passage Jesus taught that the “fish” God is looking to catch are sinful men, and the real “fishermen” are soul winners.

Chapter 7 Israelite Inscriptions from the Time of Jeremiah and Lehi Dana M. Pike The greater the number of sources the better when investi- gating the history and culture of people in antiquity. Narrative and prophetic texts in the Bible and 1 Nephi have great value in helping us understand the milieu in which Jeremiah and Lehi received and fulfilled their prophetic missions, but these records are not our only documentary sources. A number of Israelite inscriptions dating to the period of 640–586 b.c., the general time of Jeremiah and Lehi, provide additional glimpses into this pivotal and primarily tragic period in Israelite history. The number of inscriptions discovered from ancient Israel and its immediate neighbors—Ammon, Moab, Edom, Philistia, and Phoenicia—pales in comparison to the bountiful harvest of texts from ancient Assyria, Babylonia, and Egypt.

  • About This Volume Robert C
About This Volume Robert C. Evans Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick is often considered the greatest American novel—a vast epic that combines deep philosophy and high adventure as well as rich comedy and profound tragedy. Moby- Dick also offers a particularly diverse array of characters of various types, personalities, and ethnic backgrounds, and its styles are as varied as the people it depicts. Full of humorous dialects and idioms and brimming with probing, impassioned, poetic speeches, Melville’s novel explores the fascinating world of whale-hunting in the mid-nineteenth century, even as it also raises some of the most persistent questions about the purposes and meanings of human life. 7he ¿nal impact of the book—when enraged whale meets pursuing ship—is one of the most memorable episodes in all of American literature. 7he present volume examines Moby-Dick, the novel (references to Moby Dick the whale have no italics and no hyphen), from a variety of points of view. Indeed, a special focus of this volume involves the many different kinds of critical perspectives that can be—and have been—employed when examining Melville’s masterwork. In particular, the present volume emphasizes how the novel was received by many of its earlier readers; the variety of ways in which it can be interpreted by readers today; and a number of the most up-to-date approaches, such as ecocriticism and connections between Melville’s novel and modern art. 7he volume opens with an essay by -oseph &sicsila, author (among much else) of an important book concerning the “canonization” of literary classics in anthologies of American literature.

  • Elijah & Elisha
1 & 2 Kings Elijah & Elisha • In the midst of this history of king after king leading the people away from God, we find two prophets who demonstrate God’s grace and covenant faithfulness despite the people’s sin. • The narrative space and the narrative placement of these two prophets highlight their importance to the narrative as a whole. • The account of these two prophets, Elijah and Elisha, in 1 Kings 17 - 2 Kings 13, is the center of the book of Kings, comprising roughly 40% of the narrative. • One of the primary ways that the two prophets remind the people who God is and what it means to live before him is through the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. • This emphasis on the Holy Spirit in the life and ministry of Elisha helps us to understand his purpose in Kings and the whole of the biblical canon, and gives us more insight into the things concerning Jesus in all the Scriptures (Luke 24:27). • In the context of Kings, as so many in Israel have rejected God and his covenant, Elisha serves not only as a prophet calling the people to covenant faithfulness, but as the Spirit-empowered man of God who walks with God, represents God, and demonstrates the way to covenant faithfulness. • As the Spirit-empowered man of God leading the people to covenant faithfulness, however, Elisha serves as more than an example of living before God under the Old Covenant; he also serves as a preview of what it will mean to walk with God in the New Covenant in Jesus Christ, which is ultimately how God’s people will know him and what it means to live for him.
