What Makes a Great Judge? Update for Those ssttarar--nneewwss 4 The Goodland Star-News / Friday, October 14, 2005 opinion from our viewpoint... What makes a great judge? Most mouths dropped a foot when President George Bush nominated his friend and counsel Harriet Meirs to be a Su- preme Court Justice. His nomination of Meirs to replace retiring judge Sandra Day O’Connor does preserve the gender balance, but with- out any judicial background Meirs may be the first outsider to be nominated to the highest court of the land. Meirs is a corporate lawyer, and a longtime loyal friend of Bush, which makes many conservatives feel she will de- cide cases along the same ideological lines as President Bush would himself given the opportunity to appoint him- self to the high court. Her unknown quantity as a sitting judge gives others wild speculation about how she will address complex cases, and they are nervous because of that uncertainty. We have no illusions that Meirs is anything but a person with true politically conservative leanings. That is a given, but what is interesting is that she would be the first justice who would not have a lot of legal baggage tied up in previ- ous rulings from the bench. To many there is a sense the legal system is a bit inbred now with all the requirements that anyone who is a judge must first be a lawyer. Wildcat fans ready for Texas Bowl Local Kansas State University fans will be able to watch the K-State Wildcats and the Rutgers Scarlett Knights do battle in the inaugural Texas Bowl in Houston’s Reliant Stadium on Dec. 28. The game will be on the NFL Network. S&T cable will carry it on Channel 35, and Eagle will carry it on Channel 45. Apparently that isn’t the case across the state. In fact, our own Sen. Pat Roberts talked with National Football League Commis- sioner Roger Goodell, urging him to permit Kansans to watch the televised coverage of what could be one whale of a bowl game. A news release from the senator leads one to believe Kansans won’t be able to watch the game. We don’t know what area or ar- eas of the state the senator is referring to, but out here we are al- ready popping the corn, chilling the refreshments, cleaning off the grill and getting ready for the showdown. If you have friends in areas of the state that won’t be able to watch the game, invite them out, much like you would pheasant hunters to experience some of the advantages of small, rural town life. It’s not often we can brag about having something they don’t. In a news release from Sen. The provision of such certainty is thought to be integral to the exercise of leadership: uncertain citizens seek advice and reassurance, and so they turn to political leaders who can provide such goods (Downs, 1957). This understanding has been studied empirically mainly with respect to male leaders (de Clercy, 2005). This study asks: do female political leader also communicate certainty and uncertainty to citizens and, if so, how may such messages compare with those of male leaders? The study focuses on Hillary Clinton, the first woman to campaign for the American presidency. Leader communications are evaluated by analysing the content of Clinton’s three televised 2016 presidential debate performances using Atlas.ti, a qualitative content analysis program. These findings are compared with the same speech sets for her opponent, Donald Trump. Then, these values are compared with similar data for a sample of two other male presidential candidates. The study finds Clinton fits the role of a classic transactional leader and given the small number of cases under study here, there seems to be no systematic difference in how she communicated assurances to citizens based on her gender.     Fox News Was Right to Drop Dick Morris I used to appreciate the Fox News appearances of former Bill Clinton adviser, Dick Morris. I thought he brought a unique and informed perspective to his political analysis. His observations were insightful, his take on events made sense, and his bold predictions were thought- provoking. Many others clearly felt the same way. In addition to pulling in a lot of domestic and international consulting work during his time with Fox, he also wrote a barrage of books that did quite well thanks to heavy (and routinely over-the-top) self- promotion on the news network. Morris has an undeniable gift for successfully laying out his unconventional observations with logical arguments that strike a chord with people. That gift has made him an intriguing public figure and a regular fixture on Fox News’ prime-time lineup over the years. With that being said, Fox absolutely did the right thing by choosing not to renew Morris’ contract this year. In the end, the decision came down to, as Morris inferred on Piers Morgan’s CNN show this week, simple credibility. Morris was being paid by Fox not just for his gift for gab, but also for his expertise. And when you’re being paid for your expertise, you have to demonstrate that the claims you make – especially when you make them with absolute certainty – are ‘right’ more often than not. Sure, you can get away with sometimes being wrong, but Morris’ big problem is that he was almost always wrong. The final straw was his most recent and now most famous flub: His unabashed insistence that Mitt Romney would not only win the 2012 presidential election, but win it in a “landslide”.

Television shows such as, Leave it to Beaver, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best, filled the airwaves, and magazines such as McCalls and Good Housekeeping lined the news stands with pictures of the American way of life in the 1950s. A suburban, middle class life where families lived in a furnished and newly equipped modern home, complete with car, two children and a dog. Where father went to work and mother stayed at home baking and taking care of the family and left the cares of the world to her husband.[1] However, alongside this picture of an ideal America, the media presented the Red Scare, and the threat of communist infiltration that would destroy this American way of life. A considerable portion of white, educated, middle-class housewives and mothers content in their role as wives and mothers embraced the prevailing Red Scare and its rhetoric of anti- Communism and the cult of motherhood, which promoted mothers as defenders of morality and the American way of life against the threat of communism.
