www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Water quality attribution and simulation of non-point source pollution load fux in the Hulan River basin Yan Liu1,2, Hongyan Li1,2*, Geng Cui3 & Yuqing Cao1,2 Surface water is the main source of irrigation and drinking water for rural communities by the Hulan River basin, an important grain-producing region in northeastern China. Understanding the spatial and temporal distribution of water quality and its driving forces is critical for sustainable development and the protection of water resources in the basin. Following sample collection and testing, the spatial distribution and driving forces of water quality were investigated using cluster analysis, hydrochemical feature partitioning, and Gibbs diagrams. The results demonstrated that the surface waters of the Hulan River Basin tend to be medium–weakly alkaline with a low degree of mineralization and water-rock interaction. Changes in topography and land use, confuence, application of pesticides and fertilizers, and the development of tourism were found to be important driving forces afecting the water quality of the basin. Non-point source pollution load fuxes of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were simulated using the Soil Water and Assessment Tool. The simulation demonstrated that the non-point source pollution loading is low upstream and increases downstream. The distributions of N and P loading varied throughout the basin. The fndings of this study provide information regarding the spatial distribution of water quality in the region and present a scientifc basis for future pollution control. Rivers are an important component of the global water cycle, connecting the two major ecosystems of land and sea and providing a critical link in the biogeochemical cycle. -

By its very nature the short story affords the writer the opportunity to introduce swiftly any developments in ideology, theme or style. Scholars have interpreted Chinese fiction published during 1979 as indicative of a "change" in the development of 20th century Chinese literature. This study examines a number of short stories from 1979 in order to determine the extent of that "change". The first two chapters concern the establishment of a representative database and the adoption of viable methods of interpretation. An important, although much neglected, phenomenon in the make-up of 1979 literature are the works which appeared in so-called "nonofficial" journals. -

En este texto, se van a revisar las críticas sobre ella y sus obras con un hilo diacrónico partiendo del contexto social de China. Palabras clave: Xiao Hong, novela, China, críticas, feminismo. Abstract: Xiao Hong was one of "The Four Talented" in China's revolutionary era (1930s), her novels returned to the public in the late twentieth century after her death in the 40's as one of the most studied female writers by the feminist movement of the country. In this text, the criticisms about her and her works will be reviewed with a diachronic thread starting from the social context of China. Key words: Xiao Hong, novel, China, criticism, feminism. 1. Man In India, 97 (5) : 75-91 © Serials Publications ISSUES OF STUDYING CHINESE LITERATURE IN THE REGIONAL ASPECT (AS EXEMPLIFIED BY NORTHEAST CHINA FICTION OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY) Natalia Lebedeva* Background/Objective: The purpose of the article is to design a theoretical basis and identify regional features of the Northeast China fiction of the first half of the 20th century. To achieve this purpose it is necessary to study geographical, ethno-cultural, historical, socio-political, economic, and linguistic factors shaping the specificity of the region and to establish their relationship with fiction development. Methods: The method of complex analysis of the historical context and literary tradition in Northeast China will be a basic tool to be used in conjunction with the descriptive, comparative, and textual methods. Findings: It is the first time in R ussian Sinology when Chinese literature is studied as a phenomenon of the regional culture. The current research proves that a regional approach to the study of the literature of the Northeast China is acceptable. This approach is defined by a complex of various factors (from natural geographic to linguistic). The research also identifies characteristics that unite the Northeast China fiction with the national literature. It is noted that regional specificity is manifested in the development of the literary process and directly in fiction texts. New genres and themes of literary works appear. The authors of fiction texts use literary devices and images borrowed from the foreign literature (Soviet and Japanese); in the meantime, their language is enriched by the dialect vocabulary. Moreover, Chinese “Native-land literature” is investigated in detail contributing to the development of Sinology taken as a whole. -

Allegorical cinema as a rhetorical approach in Hong Kong new cinema studies1 becomes more urgent and apt when, in 2004, the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) begins financing mainland Chinese-Hong Kong co-produced films.2 Ackbar Abbas’s discussion on “allegories of 1997” (1997, 24 and 16–62) stimulates studies on Happy Together (1997) (Tambling 2003), the Infernal Affairs trilogy (2002–2003) (Marchetti 2007), Fu Bo (2003), and Isabella (2006) (Lee 2009). While the “allegories of 1997” are well- discussed, post-handover allegories remain underexamined. In this essay, I focus on allegorical strategies in Ann Hui’s post-CEPA oeuvre and interpret them as an auteurish shift from examinations of local Hong Kong issues (2008–2011) to a more allegorical mode of narration. This, however, does not mean Hui’s pre-CEPA films are not allegorical or that Hui is the only Hong Kong filmmaker making allegorical films after CEPA. Critics have interpreted Hui’s films as allegorical critiques of local geopolitics since the beginning of her career, around the time of the Sino-British Joint Declaration in 1984 (Stokes and Hoover 1999, 181 and 347 note 25), when 1997 came and went (Yau 2007, 133), and when the Umbrella Movement took place in 2014 (Ho 2017). -

Zhang Tianyi’s Selective Acceptance of Charles Dickens Chunxu Ge School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy June 2019 1 Abstract This research is a comparative study on the works of Charles Dickens (1812-1870) and Zhang Tianyi 張天翼 (1906-1985). The former was one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era; the latter, a Left-wing writer in Republican China. The study analyses five short stories from Zhang’s corpus and compares his works with ten novles of Dickens. The study argues that Dickens is one among other writers that have parallels with Zhang, through the exploration of several aspects of their works. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Dickens’s novels were introduced to China by Lin Shu. -

Chinese Public Diplomacy: the Rise of the Confucius Institute / Falk Hartig
Chinese Public Diplomacy This book presents the first comprehensive analysis of Confucius Institutes (CIs), situating them as a tool of public diplomacy in the broader context of China’s foreign affairs. The study establishes the concept of public diplomacy as the theoretical framework for analysing CIs. By applying this frame to in- depth case studies of CIs in Europe and Oceania, it provides in-depth knowledge of the structure and organisation of CIs, their activities and audiences, as well as problems, chal- lenges and potentials. In addition to examining CIs as the most prominent and most controversial tool of China’s charm offensive, this book also explains what the structural configuration of these Institutes can tell us about China’s under- standing of and approaches towards public diplomacy. The study demonstrates that, in contrast to their international counterparts, CIs are normally organised as joint ventures between international and Chinese partners in the field of educa- tion or cultural exchange. From this unique setting a more fundamental observa- tion can be made, namely China’s willingness to engage and cooperate with foreigners in the context of public diplomacy. Overall, the author argues that by utilising the current global fascination with Chinese language and culture, the Chinese government has found interested and willing international partners to co- finance the CIs and thus partially fund China’s international charm offensive. This book will be of much interest to students of public diplomacy, Chinese politics, foreign policy and international relations in general.
