2020 PROGRAMME CONTENTS WELCOME p.3 A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF OUR STUDENT STAFF COMMITTEE p.4 PIONEERING PARTNERSHIPS p.5 THE AWARDS p.6 CATEGORIES AND NOMINEES p.8 2 | hyms.ac.uk/teaching-excellence-awards | #HYMSAwards WELCOME When Hull York Medical School was established in 2003, it was founded on a strong partnership between the Universities of Hull and York, and the NHS. The aim was to draw on the strengths of those partners to deliver high-quality medical education, and produce outstanding doctors who would make a difference to the communities and patients they serve. Today that partnership is stronger than ever. The annual student-led Teaching Excellence Awards are a celebration not only of our partnership, but of the individuals and teams across our region who educate, support and inspire our Medicine and Physician Associate students on a daily basis. In light of the COVID-19 situation and in line with guidance on social distancing, we are regrettably unable to hold a physical awards evening this year. But – perhaps now more than ever – it is essential that we take time to recognise the outstanding contributions of colleagues, both clinical and non-clinical, who support the delivery of exceptional medical education and ensure that our students graduate as high-quality clinicians and academic leaders of the future. This year, our winners will be announced online in a week-long digital takeover across our social media channels. I hope you will be able to follow along on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #HYMSAwards, or on our website at hyms.ac.uk/teaching-excellence-awards. I would like to extend my personal thanks to all of our tutors and support colleagues, and my congratulations to all those who have been nominated for an award. Best of luck! PROFESSOR UNA MACLEOD Dean, Hull York Medical School 3 | hyms.ac.uk/teaching-excellence-awards | #HYMSAwards A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF OUR STUDENT STAFF COMMITTEE As Chair of the Hull York Medical School Student Staff Committee, I am delighted to represent my fellow students in welcoming you to the Teaching Excellence Awards week. The great thing about the annual Teaching Excellence Awards is that the categories, nominees and winners are all chosen by students. The Awards really are our opportunity to recognise those who have inspired us, supported us, and had a positive impact on our lives and education as medical students. Although we cannot celebrate together at a traditional awards evening this year, I am pleased that we are still able, as students, to honour those teaching and support staff who regularly go above and beyond to facilitate our learning. On behalf of all the Medicine and Physician Associate students at Hull York Medical School, I would like to say a huge thank you to the inspirational teachers, caring student support staff, friendly administrative teams and everyone else who contributes to our student experience. And best of luck to this year’s nominees! HANNAH MULLINS 4th year Medic and Chair, Hull York Medical School Student Staff Committee 4 | hyms.ac.uk/teaching-excellence-awards | #HYMSAwards PIONEERING PARTNERSHIPS The Hull York Medical School Teaching Excellence Awards allow us to recognise and celebrate the outstanding teaching delivered in collaboration with our NHS Trust and community organisation partners, and the exceptional breadth of clinical experience that these partnerships facilitate. As a School, we pride ourselves on delivering clinical placements in both primary and secondary care settings from the very beginning of our Medicine and Physician Associate programmes. We are delighted to recognise the achievements of the tutors and colleagues from across the region who make this possible. Our Partners Humber Teaching Northern Lincolnshire NHS Foundation Trust and Goole NHS Foundation Trust Rotherham Doncaster Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys York Teaching Hospital and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust NHS Foundation Trust NHS Foundation Trust 5 | hyms.ac.uk/teaching-excellence-awards | #HYMSAwards THE AWARDS The annual Teaching Excellence Awards are entirely student- led. Students from our undergraduate Medicine/Medicine With a Gateway Year and postgraduate Physician Associate Studies programmes are invited to nominate academic and clinical tutors and non-clinical support staff who have delivered exceptional medical education, and impacted positively on their experience. Winners are chosen by a committee of student representatives, based on both the quality and quantity of nominations. This year, nominations were submitted by more than 100 students – which made the deliberation process tougher than ever! Students also have the opportunity to nominate University- employed staff for University of Hull and University of York Teaching Awards, and we are delighted that many of our campus-based colleagues are nominated each year in recognition of their efforts. 6 | hyms.ac.uk/teaching-excellence-awards | #HYMSAwards ANNOUNCING OUR WINNERS This year, the winners in each category will be announced online over the course of our celebration week (see below).
