She received a BM in music composition from the University of Florida, an MM in music theory from Bowling Green State University, and an MA in psychology from the University at Buffalo. Her music theory thesis focused on atonal segmentation. At Buffalo, she worked in the Auditory Perception and Action Lab under Peter Pfordresher, and completed a thesis investigating metrical and motivic interaction in the perception of tonal patterns. Her research interests include musical segmentation and categorization, form, schema theory, and pedagogical applications of cognitive models. A Romantic Turn of Phrase: Listening Beyond 18th-Century Schemata (with Andrew Aziz) The analytical application of schemata to 18th-century music has been widely codified (Meyer, Gjerdingen, Byros), and it has recently been argued by Byros (2009) that a schema-based listening approach is actually a top-down one, as the listener is armed with a script-based toolbox of listening strategies prior to experiencing a composition (gained through previous style exposure). This is in contrast to a plan-based strategy, a bottom-up approach which assumes no a priori schemata toolbox.

From a very young age he was a promising musician and wanted to be a composer; however, it was not until 1909 when he matured into the style of writing he is known for today. His musical language consists of the departure of Austrio-Germanic traditions by exploring diatonic chords within the realm of modality. He was heavily influenced by folk songs, but also by leading French and Russian composers of the time. Vaughan Williams composed these Five Variants in 1939 using the old tune of Dives and Lazarus as his inspiration. His style of string writing at this point of his life had developed maturely with divisi strings and additional cello and viola parts to create a unique texture of rhythmic happenings. The piece is comprised of “reminiscences of various versions” strung together by the three-note motif played by the lower strings and harp at the beginning. His tonal centers of each variant are bimodal, and the key relationships between them are centered around the b minor triad.

Rok 2020 WYDZIAŁ VI Krajowi Krzysztof Penderecki 23 XI 1933–29 III 2020 Krzysztof Penderecki urodził 23 listopada 1933 w Dębicy w rodzinie wielokulturowej o korzeniach polskich, niemieckich i ormiańskich. Od 1951 roku związany był z Krakowem. Studiował kompozycję w Państwowej Wyż- szej Szkole Muzycznej w Krakowie (obecnie Akademia Muzyczna w Kra- kowie) pod kierunkiem Franciszka Skołyszewskiego, a następnie Artura Malawskiego i Stanisława Wiechowicza. W początkach swojej drogi mu- zycznej poszukiwał inspiracji w twórczości klasyków XX wieku (Bartóka, Strawińskiego) i kierunkach, stylach oraz technikach kompozytorskich awan- gardy Europy Zachodniej (serializmie, punktualizmie, aleatoryzmie i nowej brzmieniowości). Po uzyskaniu dyplomu podjął pracę nauczyciela akademic- kiego na macierzystej uczelni. Rozgłos przyniósł mu spektakularny debiut kompozytorski – premierowe wykonanie utworów Strofy, Emanacje oraz Psalmy Dawida podczas II Ogól- nopolskiego Konkursu dla Młodych Kompozytorów ZKP, gdzie otrzymał trzy pierwsze nagrody. Potężnym echem, zwłaszcza w kręgu zachodnionie- mieckim, odbiło się jego wykonanie Strof na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Muzyki Współczesnej „Warszawska Jesień”. Od początku lat 60. stał się już liderem polskiej awangardy muzycznej i jej najbardziej rozpoznawalną w świecie ikoną. Zachwyt budziły jego eks- perymenty z brzmieniem instrumentów i głosów ludzkich. Powstałe w tym okresie Tren Oﬁ arom Hiroszimy, Anaklasis, Fonogrammi, Wymiary czasu i ci- szy, De natura sonoris stały się początkiem nowego stylu, kojarzonego przez krytykę zagraniczną z Polską Szkołą Kompozytorską, a w kraju określonego mianem sonoryzmu. Hungarian virtuoso Gábor Boldoczki gives world première of Penderecki’s first trumpet concerto at Musikfestspiele Saar 2015 on 3 & 4 May Krzysztof Penderecki: Concertino for Trumpet and Orchestra Gábor Boldoczki, trumpet Saarland State Orchestra David Robert Coleman, conductor 3 May, 11am, Congresshalle Saarbruecken, GERMANY world premiere 4 May, 8pm, Congresshalle Saarbruecken, GERMANY “For some years I’ve thought about composing a trumpet concert after hearing Gabor Boldozki ” Krzysztov Penderecki On 3 and 4 May Hungarian trumpet virtuoso Gabor Boldoczki gives the world premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s first trumpet concerto at the 2015 Musikfestspiele Saar, whose theme this year is Polish Music. Penderecki took inspiration from the 1500 different species of trees growing in his own garden and selected Boldoczki to premiere the work. The premiere is part of a programme including works of three fellow composers from Poland, Stanislaw Moniuszko, Witold Lutoslawski and Karol Szymanowski, to be performed by the Saarland State Orchestra, conducted by David Robert Coleman. Described as Poland greatest living composer, Penderecki has become known worldwide for the works marking major turning point in the recent history of the 20th and 21st centuries. His musical language breaks the boundaries of conventional musical structures, seeking reconciliation for events such as the destruction of Hiroshima, with his work Threnos commemorating the victims. More recently he composed the piano concerto Resurrection in memory of those who died in the terror attacks of 11 September 2001. Apart from large-scale orchestral works, Penderecki has composed many concertos and instrumental works originated from direct cooperation with internationally renewed soloists including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Mstislav Rostropovich and Boris Pergamenschikow.
