Printed at Savron Graphics Jaffrey, New Hampshire April 2015 INTRODUCTION by Joy Pitman LISTER FORBES MACKAY was born on February 22, 1878, in Carskey, Southend, A Argyllshire, son of Colonel Alexander Forbes Mackay and Margaret Isabella (Innes) Mackay. While his parents were in India, he was brought up in Campbeltown. The family later moved to Edinburgh, where he attended George Watson’s College. Mackay did biological work under Professor Geddes and D’Arcy Thomson at Dundee. He served as a trooper in South Africa and later with Baden Powell’s police. After returning to graduate from Edinburgh in 1901 as M.B., CH.B., he went back to the front as a civil surgeon. Later he entered the Navy as a surgeon, but retired after four years to join Shackleton’s Antarctic Expedition. -

88 CONCRETE WAVE WINTER 2012 MONTREAL THE LONGBOARD SCENE EXPOSED BY MICHAEL BROOKE Montreal is a city unlike anything you’ll experience in the rest of North America. It seamlessly blends art, history and culture into a tantalizing mosaic. At times it can be mysterious and maddening, but I have always found it utterly mesmerizing. There is an endless amount of incredible food that can please any type of palate. The extraor- dinary number of bars that stay open to the early hours have sealed Montreal’s reputation as quite the party town. Is it any wonder I wanted to share this magical place with the readers of Concrete Wave? The Big O was dug up and moved 80 meters to accommodate the new stadium. Photo: Michael Brooke But what about the longboard scene, you wonder? I am pleased to report that not only is there a thriving longboard scene in Montreal, but it is one that is incredibly hospitable to visitors. You just have to expe- rience it – to jump in and grab hold of the “joie de vivre” that oozes from this city and its inhabitants. My first visit to Montreal was in 1978 on a school trip. While it was enjoyable, it wasn’t until 1983 that I truly fell in love with the city. Montreal is only a five- hour drive from Toronto and a four-hour drive from New York City, but as you will soon discover, it feels like it’s in its own unique world. Numerous people have helped nurture the long- board scene in Montreal. -

We are excited to grow our family and welcome your child into our Catholic family! We’ve been happily married for more than 10 years and have a loving, stable home. We have 4 boys and have adopted each of them, and hope to add to our family soon! We promise that your child will be loved, protected, and surrounded by family and friends who will cherish him or her unconditionally. We both knew very soon after we met that we had found that one special person we wanted to spend the rest of our life with. God is the center of our marriage and life, and will always be the center of our home and family. Our adopted children mean the world to us! Katie loves being a stay-at-home Mom and Dominic is eager to get home from work each day to see the kids. We have a special relationship with Jacob’s birth parents and keep in close contact with the family. Timmy’s birth mom chose a closed adoption but we think of her often and keep her in our prayers. Both Michael’s and David’s birth moms receive pictures and updates from us throughout the year. We’d be happy to keep in contact with you, if you wish! Between the two of us, we have 14 siblings and 64 nieces/nephews. We are very close to our families and get together with them frequently. Some of the things we enjoy include spending time with family, outdoor activities like gardening, About Us hiking, campfires, or going on family vacations. -

That was the main point of guest speaker Sherry Colgan Stone in her recent active shooter presentation on the San Jacinto and Menifee campuses. The Active Shooter Awareness events took place last week on Sept. 10 and 11. Stone said she’s motivated to give these presentations because the first ten minutes of an active shooting are the most crucial. “Law enforcements have tactical training. We train them, but what about the educators? Nobody is teaching these students even though the first ten minutes they are on their own,” she said. During her presentations, Stone told students to be on the lookout for “PINs: Pre-incident Indicators.” She urged students to remember EBD: Escape, Barricade and Defend. Glossary of Ski Terms by Skis.com Page 1 of 11 Home > Ski-O-Pedia > Glossary of Ski Terms Glossary of Ski Terms By Steve Kopitz 12/18/2012 Skiing and snowboarding are two of the greatest winter sports on the planet, and like anything else in this world the two sports have certain terms and jargon that can be confusing without a bit of definition. Below you will find a number of terms/phrases used in skiing and snowboarding to refer to products, clothing, and the sports of skiing and snowboarding in general. We have provided a brief definition to help clear up any confusion or questions you may have on these terms/phrases. A ABS Sidewall: Industry term for a type of edge construction on skis and snowboards using high quality ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic. All-Mountain Ski: A large percentage of Alpine skis fall into this category. All-Mountain skis are designed to perform in all types of snow conditions and at most speeds. Other names for this style of ski include Mid- Fat skis, All-Purpose skis, and the One-ski Quiver. Alpine Skiing: Downhill skiing, as opposed to Nordic Skiing. Après-Ski: The day’s over – time for drinks and swapping war stories from the slopes. Audio Helmet: A helmet wired with speakers that allows you to listen to music while skiing. Avalanche Beacon: A safety device worn by skiers, snowboarders, and others in case an avalanche traps them. The beacon transmits a signal (typically at the international standard frequency of 457khz) that rescuers can use to locate a buried person.
