Argyrosomus Regius (Asso, 1801) Corvina Meagre Filo Chordata Argyrosomus regius (Asso, 1801) Corvina Meagre Filo Chordata Clase Actinopterygii Orden Perciformes Familia Sciaenidae DESCRIPCIÓN Cuerpo alargado y algo comprimido de color plateado, con boca grande de color naranja, oblicua y en posición terminal, el maxilar alcanza la mitad posterior del ojo. Aleta dorsal con 9-10 espinas en la parte anterior y parte posterior con 1 espina y 26-29 radios blandos; anal con 2 espinas y 7-8 radios blandos. Pectorales cortas y caudal truncada. Cuerpo cubierto principalmente por escamas ctenoideas, con algunas cicloideas en el pecho, el hocico y debajo de los ojos. La línea lateral se prolonga hasta el borde posterior de la aleta caudal. DISTRIBUCIÓN • Área de distribución natural Atlántico oriental desde Noruega hasta Gibraltar, costa de África hasta el Congo, Mediterráneo y Mar Negro. Su presencia en el Mar Rojo se debe a su migración a través de el Canal de Suez. En Canarias es ocasional con unos pocos registros de individuos adultos. • Área de introducción Introducida en las islas de Tenerife y Gran Canaria HÁBITAT • Hábitat en su área de distribución natural Especie bentopelágica cuyo rango de distribución batimétrica abarca desde las aguas costeras hasta aproximadamente 300 m de profundidad. Juveniles y subadultos realizan migraciones anádromas penetrando en estuarios y ambientes salobres. • Hábitat en área de introducción Aguas costeras poco profundas. • Requerimientos Sin grandes requerimientos al ser más o menos eurihalina, penetrando en aguas salobres y con cierta euritermia. BIOLOGÍA Y ECOLOGÍA • Ecología trófica Depredador principalmente ictiófago y de crustáceos nadadores. • Biología de la reproducción Dioico con fecundación externa. Reproducción estacional, desde finales de primavera has ta julio en el Golfo de Vizcaya y Mediterráneo Oriental y desde enero hasta mayo en las costas de Mauritania. La talla de primera madurez es 101,7 cm y la edad de primera madurez la alcanza con 6,2 años • Interacciones entre especies Las interacciones serán principalmente de competición por los recursos con las especies depredadoras autóctonas y de depredación sobre las posibles presas. A su vez, pueden servir de transmisores de nuevas enfermedades y parásitos para las comunidades nativas. • Patrón social y comportamiento Especie migradora que se congrega en la costa para la reproducción. En Tenerife, los ejemplares procedentes de los escapes han sido observados formando grupos de 15 a 20 individuos y también algún ejemplar solitario. • Demografía Pueden llegar a vivir más de 30 años y alcanzar una talla máxima de 230 cm. FECHA O PERIODO INTRODUCCIÓN Finales de 2005 principios de 2006 VÍAS Y CAUSAS DE INTRODUCCIÓN Escapes procedentes de jaulas de engorde de peces empleadas por la acuicultura en mar abierto. CAPACIDAD DE DISPERSIÓN Presenta una larva planctónica de vida corta, pero los adultos tienen capacidad natatoria alta. IMPACTO • Sobre los hábitats Sin determinar, pero no parece tratarse de una especie transformadora del hábitat. • Sobre especies nativas o introducidas Depredación y competición con especies nativas. Posibilidad de transmisión de nuevas enfermedades y parásitos. Sci. 18: 137–145 1997 137 INFLUENCE OF PREY AVAILABILITY ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF DUSKY KOB ARGYROSOMUS JAPONICUS (SCIAENIDAE) IN THE GREAT FISH RIVER ESTUARY, WITH NOTES ON THE DIET OF EARLY JUVE- NILES FROM THREE OTHER ESTUARINE SYSTEMS M. H. GRIFFITHS* The stomach contents of 391 juvenile dusky kob Argyrosomus japonicus (23–805 mm total length, TL) from the Great Fish River estuary were analysed. Early juveniles (<50 mm TL) fed predominantly on mysids and calanoid copepods. As the juveniles increased in size, copepods were replaced by teleost prey, but mysids remained an important dietary component of all dusky kob <600 mm TL. Teleosts were the principal prey of dusky kob >100 mm TL, but the dominant species varied with predator size: early juveniles of 100–149 mm TL preyed mostly on the late larvae and early juveniles of other fish species, particularly the Cape stumpnose Rhabdosargus holubi; juveniles of 150–400 mm TL fed largely on early juvenile mugilids and on the small, pelagic estuarine round herring Gilchristella aestuaria; juvenile dusky kob of >400 mm TL fed on several teleost species, including early juvenile conspecifics, but their most important prey item was G. aestuaria. Based on the distribution patterns of A. japonicus and their predators and prey in the Great Fish River estuary, it is concluded that predator avoidance and prey availability determine the spatial distribution of early juveniles in estuaries, and that the distribution patterns of larger juveniles (>400 mm TL) depend on those of their principal prey. Important prey items of early juvenile from three other estuarine systems included calanoid copepods, mysids, insects, amphipods and swimming prawns.

Mouth large, terminal; upper jaw extending backward below posterior half of eye; jaws meeting evenly in front; chin without barbel; teeth well differentiated into large and small in both jaws, but none canine-like; the large ones widely spaced, forming outer series in upper jaw, inner series in lower jaw; upper rostral pores 3, marginal rostral pores 5; mental pores in 3 pairs, the first small, rounded at front of chin, separated by symphysis,the ventral view others small, slit-like. Gill rakers slender, slightly shorter than gill of head filaments at angle of arch, 8 to 10 on lower limb of first gill arch. HECHTt The ages of dusky kob Al:r?yro.wmus japonicus, sampled from three regions along the South African eastern seaboard during 1991 and 1992, were determined from longitudinal sections of otoliths. The otoliths were se­ lected from fish 35 - I 750 mm total length. Ages from 0 to 42 years were recorded, but fish older than 27 were rare. Analysis of the otolith margins indicated that a single opaque and a single hyaline zone were being de­ posited annually. The first annulus was validated by analysis of daily increments. Observed lengths-at-age were highly variable. The fitted generalized Von Bertalanffy growth equations were: L = I 473[1-e-0·228(1+2•620>]2-468 for females, 1 L =I 372[1-e-0 •260U+4•282 )]4.6 19 for males. 1 Growth was faster in females, but in both sexes it slowed down after the age of 8: The relationships between otolith dimensions (length, height, mass and ostium to cauda distance) and fish length, in each of three regions, suggested that South African A. japonicus exist as three or more stocks. Nevertheless, it hasn’t been studied enough, and feed producers do not have enough information about the nutrient requirements to optimize the feed diets of the meagre. This study measures the growth response of this fish to several amounts of food and gives information about the proportion of protein and energy that should be included in its diet, as well as the recommended amount of food to optimize its growth. Abstract: The meagre is a carnivorous species and might be a suitable candidate species for the diversification of aquaculture in the Mediterranean region. This is based on its high growth and flesh quality. Nevertheless, there is little information available about its growth rates and nutrient requirements. The objective of this study was to determine the protein and energy requirements of juvenile meagre (Argyrosomus regius).
