MARQUES Departamento de CiCllcias BioJ6gicas Universidade Estadual de Feim de Santana, Km 3, 8R 116, Call/pus Ulliversitririo, CEP 44031-460, Feirn de Salltalla, Bahia, Brasil ABSTRACT.- Artisanal fishermen from Siribinha Beach in the State of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil, have been using several marine/estuarine animal resources as folk medicines. Wf.> hilve recorded the employment of mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms, fishes, reptiles, and cetace<lns, and noted a high predominance of fishes over other aquatic animals. Asthma, bronchitis, stroke, and wounds arc the most usual illnesses treated by animal-based medicines. These results corroborate Marques' zoothcrapeutic universality hypothesis. According to him, all human cultures that prcscnt a developed medical system do use animals as medicines. Further studies are requested in order to estimate the existence of bioactive compounds of ph<lrmacological value in these bioresources. Lamarca2 1BFAR-National Marine Fisheries Development Center, Sangley Point, Cavite City, Philippines 2BFAR-Fishing Technology Division, 860 Arcadia Bldg., Quezon Avenue, Quezon City, Philippines ABSTRACT Round scad exploration by purse seine in the waters of western Philippines was conducted from April 22 to May 7, 1998 for a period of five (5) fishing days with a total catch of 7.3 tons and an average of 1.5 tons per setting. Dominant species caught were Decapterus spp. having 70.09% of the total catch, followed by Selar spp. at 12.66% and Rastrelliger spp. 10.70%. Among the Decapterus spp. caught, D. macrosoma attained the highest total catch composition by species having 68.81% followed by D. kurroides and D.russelli with 0.31% and 1.14% respectively. The round scad fishery stock was composed mainly of juvenile fish (less than 13 cm) and Age group II (13 cm to 14 cm). Few large round scad at Age group IV and V (20 cm to 28 cm) stayed at the fishery. -

While the contribution of climate warming to the loss of live coral cover has been well documented, the associated effects on fish have not. Such information is important as coral reef fish assemblages provide critical contributions to ecosystem function and services. This thesis assesses the medium to long term impacts of coral loss on fish assemblages in the western Indian Ocean. Feeding observations of corallivorous butterflyfish demonstrates that considerable feeding plasticity occurs among habitat types, but strong relationships exist between degree of specialisation and declines in abundance following coral loss. Furthermore, obligate corallivores are lost fairly rapidly following decline in coral cover, whereas facultative corallivores are sustained until the structure of the dead coral begins to erode. Surveys of benthic and fish assemblages in Mauritius spanning 11 years highlight small changes in both benthos and fish through time, but strong spatial trends associated with dredging and inter-specific competition. In Seychelles, although there was little change in biomass of fishery target species above size of first capture, size spectra analysis of the entire assemblage revealed a loss of smaller individuals (<30cm) and an increase in the larger individuals (>45cm). -

Upper jaw reaching to just below front margin eye. Teeth in jaws in a single series, those of upper jaw confined to anterior end of jaw; vomerine teeth in a transverse strip; palatines toothed. First dorsal fin with 7-8 spines; second dorsal fin with one spine and 32-33 soft rays. Pectoral fins falcate, tips reaching to below origin of second dorsal fin. Anal fin with 2 detached spines, followed by I + 28-29 soft rays. A single finlet behind dorsal and anal fins. Lateral line slightly arched, becoming straight below 12th to 13th dorsal fin rays; curved portion longer than straight portion; 32 to 38 moderate scutes. Colour green to blue-green above, silvery white below; dorsal, pectoral and caudal fins pale yellow; anterior apex of 2nd dorsal fin withe; a black spot on edge of operculum; pupil black. The Shallow-water Macro Echinoderm Fauna of Nha Trang Bay (Vietnam): Status at the Onset of Protection of Habitats Master Thesis in Marine Biology for the degree Candidatus scientiarum Øyvind Fjukmoen Institute of Biology University of Bergen Spring 2006 ABSTRACT Hon Mun Marine Protected Area, in Nha Trang Bay (South Central Vietnam) was established in 2002. In the first period after protection had been initiated, a baseline survey on the shallow-water macro echinoderm fauna was conducted. Reefs in the bay were surveyed by transects and free-swimming observations, over an area of about 6450 m2. The main area focused on was the core zone of the marine reserve, where fishing and harvesting is prohibited. Abundances, body sizes, microhabitat preferences and spatial patterns in distribution for the different species were analysed. A total of 32 different macro echinoderm taxa was recorded (7 crinoids, 9 asteroids, 7 echinoids and 8 holothurians). Reefs surveyed were dominated by the locally very abundant and widely distributed sea urchin Diadema setosum (Leske), which comprised 74% of all specimens counted. Most species were low in numbers, and showed high degree of small- scale spatial variation. Commercially valuable species of sea cucumbers and sea urchins were nearly absent from the reefs. Species inventories of shallow-water asteroids and echinoids in the South China Sea were analysed. The results indicate that the waters of Nha Trang have echinoid and asteroid fauna quite similar to that of the Spratly archipelago. Comparable pristine areas can thus be expected to be found around the offshore islands in the open parts of the South China Sea. -

Samples were obtained monthly since January 2018 to February 2019 from the artisanal fishermen and the commercial fleet of Mar del Plata. A histological analysis was carried out and the main biologic-reproductive parameters were estimated: fecundity, oocyte frequency distribution and gonadosomatic index (GSI). Both the macroscopic and microscopic analyses showed reproductive activity in March and November. Mature females were recorded, which showed hydrated oocytes, as was evidenced by the histological procedures. Both, the histological and the oocyte diameter distribution analyses showed the presence of all oocyte Submitted December 11, 2019 maturation stages in ovaries in active-spawning subphase, indicating that Accepted July 9, 2020 P. signata is a multiple spawner with indeterminate annual fecundity.
