Förändringen har drivits på av de senaste Mårens snabba teknikutveckling, i synnerhet bredbandsutbyggnaden samt tillgången till trådlöst internet och smart mobil. Nu är nästan alla uppkopplade och förväntas vara det. Många nya tjänster går inte ens att använda utan tillgång till internet och en smart mobil. När vårt eget personliga medieflöde alltid finns till hands i våra mobiler blir det svårt att mäta hur ofta och hur länge vi tar del av det flödet. Men genom att använda långa tidsserier, som Nordicoms Mediebarometer, går det att se hur mediekonsumtionen fort- sätter att förändras över tid. Det finns stora skillnader mellan de ungas och de äldres konsumtionsmönster. När de unga överger radion till förmån för digitala musiktjänster och poddar stannar de äldre kvar vid radioapparaten. Detsamma gäller för det tablålagda tv-tittandet som fortsätter att minska i alla åldersgrupper men främst hos de yngre. Det betyder inte att tittandet på rörlig bild minskar utan det ökar snarare till följd av ett allt större utbud av digitala tjänster. De yngre barnen och tonåringarna har tillgång till ett helt eget målgruppsanpassat medie- utbud och därmed en konsumtion som skiljer sig från de äldre åldersgrupperna.
