First and foremost, the American Papers is a testament to the many faculty men- tors that have spent countless hours of their time to assist students at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) in their personal academic development and in making this journal what it is today. Our mission as writers and editors is to hold up the long-standing tradition of presenting the highest quality papers written by both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in our American Studies courses over the current academic year. As American Studies students and scholars, we strive to examine and better un- derstand various aspects of American culture from an interdisciplinary perspective. This year’s journal reflects this goal by traversing through the diverse classes that our department offers. At CSUF, the American Studies department has worked hard to develop courses that engage students in many avenues of study, such as fashion, lit- erature, and the built environment. This year’s journal features papers written for new and traditional courses focusing on gender, race, sexuality, popular culture, and more. Each year, the American Papers publishes one exceptional paper chosen by a com- mittee of our professors to honor Earl James Weaver, one of the founding professors of American Studies at CSUF. This year’s winner is Ashley Loup’s “Plead the Fifth,” which discusses changing cultural perceptions of African American lawyers through- out modern history and was published in last year’s issue of the American Papers. We are happy to present the runner-up of the 2017 Weaver prize for publication in this issue. Entitled “The Talk: A Survival Guide,” Jena Delgado-Sette examines the ways African American parents talk to their children about the inevitability of police encounters. We hope that this year’s journal will engage our readers in ways it has not before. Several of our essays explore contemporary and even locally relevant topics in Ameri- can culture that are changing the discourse of earlier scholarship and adding new and exciting pathways to critical discussion and analysis. Finally, the Editors-in-Chief wish to thank our contributors and our editorial staff for all their hard work in put- ting this year’s issue together. It has truly been a pleasure to work with our excellent students and our consistently supportive faculty advisor, Professor Dustin Abnet. The Editors 6 Course Descriptions AMST 201: Introduction to American Studies With the concept of culture as a unifying principle, focus is on four separate time periods to provide the framework for an understanding of American civilization. Various kinds of documents used to illustrate the nature and advantages of an inter- disciplinary approach. AMST 345: The American Dream Interdisciplinary analysis, in settings both historical and contemporary, of the myth and reality surrounding the notion of America as a land of unparalleled and unlim- ited possibilities, especially in the achievement of personal material success. AMST 350: Theories and Methods of American Studies Provides an understanding and appreciation of methodology, theories of society, and images of humanity as they affect American Studies contributions to scholar- ship. Fulfills the university upper-division writing requirement for American Studies majors. AMST 401: Stories of Los Angeles Reading the City: Cultural life of an American city as seen through its historical memory and self-image, and its diverse racial, ethnic, and class life, and its artistic and expressive culture. AMST 401: Literature and American Culture Contemporary literature as a cultural document. The relationship between American culture and its recent fiction, focusing on several important novels and plays since the end of the Second World War. AMST 401: Stories of Los Angeles Examines how people have told stories about Los Angeles. Los Angeles is repeatedly represented, fantasized, and forgotten, famously divided and sprawling, renowned for both sunshine and noir–and it is also the setting for most of our lives, so its contra- dictory stories are well worth exploring. AMST 451: American Fashion Cultural politics of fashion in America. Uses interdisciplinary sources, including material culture, visual arts, legal codes, protests, advertising, and popular culture to study the diverse meanings of fashion in the past and present U.S. AMST 488: Race, Sex, and the Urban City Focusing on major urban spaces at key moments in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this course examines the ways that anxieties about race, gender, youth, and sexuality have come to be identified with urban spaces and modern city life. 7 The American Papers AMST 501: Theories and Methods The American Studies movement. Its conceptual and methodological development. The way this development was affected by and in turn reflected larger trends in the culture itself. AMST 502: Themes in America Culture and Desire: Theoretical Approaches to the History of the Emotions: Ad- vanced analysis of enduring patterns and innovative shifts in the ways Americans have defined, controlled, and expressed emotions such as anger, lust, shame, pride, fear, jealousy, grief, and joy from the 17th century to the present. This year, taught by Dr. Jesse Battan. Words have the power to reach mass audiences and important figures, especially if they have compelling messages behind them. Phillis Wheatley was an example of an individual who used her literary talent to influence how people thought about complex concepts. She was a slave girl who learned how to read and write at an early age. Her masters felt that she would grow up to be a genius, especially because the idea of a slave being educated was simply unheard of at the time (Raphael, 100). By using the medium of poetry and savvy word choices, Phillis Wheatley was able to form a connec- tion between African Americans and the colonists, and make the argument that African slaves deserved the right to equality.

Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s.

    “The Obsolete Man (and Woman, and Child, and Baby, and Race)” 1 Peter 2:17 18 January 2015 What would you do if your government said that you had no value, no worth, no dignity and therefore you were obsolete? What would you do if your government said that it was going to dispose of you? Rod Serling tackled this in an episode of The Twilight Zone called “The Obsolete Man.” In this episode, Burgess Meredith, as expected, puts in a stellar performance as Romney Wordsworth, a man deemed obsolete by his country. Here’s a synopsis from Wikipedia- In a future totalitarian America, Romney Wordsworth is a man put on trial for the crime of being obsolete. His occupation as a librarian is a crime punishable by death as the State has eliminated books and literature. He believes in God, a crime also punishable by death, as the State claims to have proven that there is no God. He is prosecuted by the Chancellor, who announces in front of the assembled court that Wordsworth, in not being an asset to the State, shall be liquidated. After being convicted, Wordsworth is allowed to choose his method of execution. He cryptically requests that he be granted a personal assassin to whom he may privately disclose his preferred method of execution. He also requests that his execution be televised nationwide. Thinking that the spectacle will help show the public what happens when citizens become of no use to the State, the court grants both requests. A television camera is installed in Wordsworth's study to broadcast his final hours and execution live to the nation.

Daryl Chingono Abstract This research examines the relationship in consumer behavior and that of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, awarding and nomination processes. The American film industry is the most popular film industry, and is the highest grossing film industry in the world. A lack of diversity and representation is a potential loss in revenue. The research uses OLS regression model analysis of time-series data, over 20 years for the highest grossing films. The model uses variables which measure consumer sentiment, profitability, genre and accreditation of films. In doing so it is possible to also observe the effects of systemic inequality within the film industry on film earnings as well as consumer behavior vs Academy Award recognition. A short film is defined as an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits. B. This excludes from consideration such works as: 1. previews and advertising films 2. sequences from feature-length films, such as credit sequences 3. unaired episodes of established TV series 4. unsold TV series pilots II. CATEGORIES An award shall be given for the best achievement in each of two categories. A. Animated Short Film An animated film is created by using a frame-by-frame technique, and usually falls into one of the two general fields of animation: character or abstract. Some of the techniques of animating films include cel animation, computer animation, stop-motion, clay animation, pixilation, cutouts, pins, camera multiple pass imagery, kaleidoscopic effects, and drawing on the film frame itself. Documentary short subjects that are animated may be submitted in either the Animated Short Film category or the Documentary Short Subject category, but not both. B. Live Action Short Film A live action film uses live action techniques as the basic medium of entertainment. Documentary short subjects will not be accepted in the live action category. III. ELIGIBILITY A. To be eligible for award consideration for the 88th Awards year, a short film must fulfill one of the following qualifying criteria between October 1, 2014, and September 30, 2015. Tiivistelmä – Referat – Abstract Tämän Pro gradu -tutkielman aihe on afroamerikkalaisten asema elokuvissa, jotka on valittu parhaan elokuvan Oscar-palkinnon ehdokkaiksi, ja joissa afroamerikkalainen näyttelijä esittää keskeistä hahmoa. Tutkimuksessa mitataan ajallisesti, kuinka paljon afroamerikkalaiset ja valkoiset amerikkalaiset puhuvat näissä elokuvissa. Tutkimus on ajankohtainen, sillä viime vuosina Yhdysvaltain elokuva-akatemiaa on kritisoitu siitä, miten vähän afroamerikkalaisia ja muihin etnisiin vähemmistöihin kuuluvia on palkittu Oscar-palkinnoilla. Tutkimuksen hypoteesi on, että valkoiset amerikkalaiset puhuvat afroamerikkalaisia enemmän, vaikka tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu afroamerikkalaisista kertovista elokuvista.
