196 book reviews Karl Gunther Reformation Unbound. Protestant Visions of Reform in England, 1525–1590. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 2014, x + 284 pp. isbn 9781107074484. £65; us$99. In a rich and important study, Karl Gunther reassesses the character of the English church under the Tudors. Combing through both well-known and lesser-studied religious and polemical tracts, Gunther uncovers a “spectrum of voices” (p. 15) who called for radical change in the church. While radical ecclesiological visions have been typically ascribed to radical Puritans and separatists during Elizabeth’s reign, Gunther persuasively argues that these visions had existed in the minds of English reformers since Henry’s day. Gunther’s first and best chapter explores a wealth of radical ecclesiologi- cal expressions in the Henrician church, illuminating the extent of evangelical challenges to traditional institutions. Combing through the works of familiar figures such as William Tyndale, Robert Barnes, and François Lambert he tries to discover their opinions on a range of issues, including the eradication of bishops, the creation of new parishes, congregational discipline, and even the freedom for parishioners to form separatist congregations in case of theologi- cally or morally errant pastors. Perhaps even more important than their radical nature is the way these ecclesiological visions completely contradicted quasi- official publications of the 1530s and 1540s which claimed that the Bible had not set down rules of church governance and that therefore it was for the monarch to determine them. While chapter one antedates what scholars have considered for a long time to be later developments, chapter two ventures somewhere new. -

Luther set forth a striking vision of what we today might call “Christianity and culture,” a vision rooted in centuries of earlier Christian thought—and yet without any exact precedent. While I do not believe Luther’s vision got everything right, I suggest that its basic features are compelling and remain surprisingly relevant for contemporary Christians. Luther’s famous treatise, “Temporal Authority: To What Extent It Should Be Obeyed” (1523), captures the main ideas and implications of the vision. At least four perennially important themes emerge from this treatise. First, Luther asserts that civil government claims legitimate authority. Magistrates bear the sword and enforce the law by God’s ordinance. -

Pepperney 2009 Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how the idea of religious toleration was represented in early modern English polemical prose, poetry, and other literary genres. I argue that religious toleration extends from what is permissible in spiritual practice and belief, to what is permissible in print, and texts on religious toleration encouraged writers to contemplate the status of the discourse to which they contributed. Although the study begins and ends with analysis of two authors whose writings on toleration have received extensive critical attention, this dissertation also applies the latest theoretical framework for understanding religious toleration to writers whose contribution to the literature of toleration has previously been less well documented. Thomas More‘s Utopia (1516) outlines an ideal state with apparently progressive institutions and social practices, including property shared in common, abolition of the monetary system, and religious toleration. Contrary to the view of previous criticism, however, the image of a tolerant society in More‘s Utopia is unlike the modern ideal of toleration as a foundational principal of modern pluralism. Although More also argued against toleration of heresy in his later polemical works, he engaged with the concept of toleration to contemplate the efficacy of the dialogue as a persuasive tool. -

Werrell Introduction According to Robert Barnes, Paul’s Cross was a cockpit in which the Henrician religious traditionalists and the evangelical avant-garde fought their battles. The cock fight between Barnes and Stephen Gardiner during the Lenten season of 1540 is the subject of this paper. Assessments of Henry VIII’s attitude towards the Reformation have frequently been sim- plistic. After his break with Rome in the 1530s, England was set on a course leading to the full-scale Reformation of Edward VI’s reign. But Henry had to lead the English into the direction he wanted them to go. There were areas where he could force his will, as he did in getting the clergy to yield to him, and to remove the pope from supremacy in England. But there were many occasions where he had to tread carefully. The memory of the Wars of the Roses was alive, and there were families that had a better claim to the English crown than Henry VII had. Henry VIII still had to keep the balance of power, and following his break with Rome, the balance was still delicate between two major parties, which now became not so much political as religious, between the Catholics and the reformers. Henry had to secure a balance between those who wanted a return to some form of traditional Catholicism—even, for some, a restoration of the power of the papacy and, on the other hand, those who wanted a move towards a Reformed Church. -

Morphew 1 Title: Obedience, Resistance, and Legible Martyrdoms: Narratives of Persecution in Reformation England Author: Annie Morphew Faculty Mentor: Jennifer Deane School: University of Minnesota Morris In July 1540, six Englishmen were executed at Smithfield. Robert Barnes (a disciple of Martin Luther), William Jerome and Thomas Garret were burnt for heresy as Thomas Abel, Richard Fetherstone (the personal chaplain of the former Queen Catherine and tutor to the future Mary I), and Edward Powell were simultaneously hung, drawn, and quartered for treason. These two groups of men cherished very different religious opinions: Barnes, Jerome, and Garret were all committed evangelicals whereas Abel, Fetherstone, and Powell were Roman Catholic priests. However, in July 1540 they shared one vital similarity—they had all failed to conform to the religious and political terms of Henry VIII’s England, suffered religious persecution as a result, and paid with their lives. The evangelicals “suffered because their vision of a godly Reformation extended farther and faster than that of the king,” while the Catholics died traitors’ deaths “for upholding the primacy of the pope and the validity of [Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon].”1 According to historian Helen Parish, the fates of these men indicate the “necessity of conformity to the mind of the king” in Reformation England.2 Parish’s argument is emblematic of a dominant strain in the historiography of the English Reformation. In 1534, the Act of Supremacy established Henry VIII as Supreme Head on Earth of the Church in England, definitively separating the English church from the institutional and spiritual fold of the Roman Catholic Church and launching the religious, social, and political transformations known collectively as the English Reformation. -

Gómez Soliño UNIVERSIDAD DE LA LAGUNA In the long process of normalization undergone by the English language in the early modern period the printing press is generally considered to have been a highly influential contributing factor. Most of the early presses were set up in Westminster-London and they printed mainly books in the vernacular at comparatively affordable prices. By so doing, they added to the recognition and diffusion of the incipient national standard based on the mixed language of the capital. Albert Baugh and Thomas Cable summarize the linguistic impact of the printing press in the following terms “A powerful force thus existed for promoting a standard, uniform language, and the means were now available for spreading that language throughout the territory in which it was understood.” (1978: 200) The early printers, however, were not linguistic reformers and the study of the texts they pro- duced shows them on the whole not to be above their most enlightened contemporaries as far as variation in language is concerned (Scragg 1974, Gómez Soliño 1984, 1985, 1986). Early Modern Standard English was far from being a uniform variety and, though to a lesser degree than manuscripts, the printed books of that period are not exempt from variant spellings, often phonologically motivated and thus ultimately dialectal in origin (Wyld 1920, Dobson 1955). Another contributing factor to linguistic normalization, though one less commented upon by the authors of standard textbooks, was the Protestant Reformation. One of the points in the reformers’ agenda was the biblical and liturgical use of the vernacular.
