The initiative’s main objective is to prevent deaths, injuries and illegal actions that generally come as a result from driving under the influence. “On the proactive front, we want to educate base personnel on the severe consequences of driving under the influence and the importance of having a plan,” said Howell. “Unfortunately, plans fall through and that’s why we are here. If A2D2’s services prevent even a single DUI and keep an intoxicated driver off the road, then the program is a success.” A2D2 is entirely volunteer run, with no funding from base organizations. In order for the program to work, it needs volunteers. “Anyone assigned to Schriever or Peterson Air Force Bases can

Jason Gabrick 50th Space Wing Public Affairs Schriever’s premier a cappella musical ensemble, Orbital Harmony, is searching for opportunities to show off its vo- cal prowess. When the Schriever Choir first began in March of 2001, the entire choir was often not available for events because of conflicting schedules and the daily grind. As a result, a small a cappella group, usually a quartet, was formed out of the choir on an as-needed basis to provide the neces- sary support for such events as promotion and retirement ceremonies. These small impromptu groups were often referred to as the Stellar Voices Choir. The group was informal and continually shifting its members. “We didn’t have a specific logo then,” said Neal Vickrey, a member of Orbital Harmony and the Space Innovation and Development Center here. “When the decision was made last year to formally name our a cappella performance group ‘Orbital Harmony’ we decided to adopt one to help get the word out and to get people to associate us with our logo.” The Schriever choir has come a long way. Although the choir has performed at Denver Broncos’ games and other notable events, the new group is trying to make a name for itself. Last year, the official performance group of the Schriever Choir, Orbital Harmony was formed in the same spirit as the impromptu Stellar Voices Choir. Since its inception, the group has performed at ceremonies such as retirements, change of commands and satellite deactivations. One of the most notable events the group performed at recently was a retirement for a general officer at the U.S. Air Force Photo by Scott Prater Academy here in Colorado Springs. CO: Academy Spirit, Mountaineer, Schriever Sentinel, Space Observer 8 November 8, 2012 Schriever Sentinel Demolition highlights Schriever’s green side By Scott Prater Schriever Sentinel Contractor crews smashed Bldg. T-609 to bits Monday morning. Giant backhoes toppled walls and pulverized large chunks of concrete, steel and sheetrock into a mangled mess. But, first impressions might have been deceiving in this case. What may have looked like a pile of loose debris actually turned out to be a controlled recycling site. Based on 50th Civil Engineer Squadron guidance, the contractor demolished the temporary building, and for- mer home of the 310th Space Wing headquarters, in such a fashion as to save valuable copper, steel and other recyclable material. The demolition culminated more than a year of planning by members of 50 CES and the 50th Contracting Squadron. “There are several reasons why we conducted this project the way we did,” said Robert Blevins, 50 CES chief of pro- grams. “We have regulations to satisfy, energy and efficiency standards to meet, and operations and maintenance cost concerns.” First constructed for use by the Space Innovation and Development Center in 2004, Bldg. T-609 eventually found its way into the hands of the 310 SW, which used it until con- struction on its permanent structure concluded last year. Air Force Instruction 32-101 states organizations are only authorized to use a temporary facility while they are waiting for a new military construction project to be completed. “Temporary structures, by their nature, are also very costly to maintain, own and operate,” Blevins said. “Their energy U.S. Air Force Photo/Dennis Rogers characteristics are underperforming compared to perma- Heavy equipment sits idle during a break in the demolition of Bldg.
