Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

The Anonymous Groups
The Enduring Legacy: the anonymous groups The apology that launched a million amends By Jay Stinnett, Los Angeles July 27th, 2008, marked the 100th anniversary of Frank Buchman’s Spiritual Awakening – one that directly linked him to the cofounders of AA. As a young man Buchman gave everything he had to establishing a shelter for homeless boys in the slums of Philadelphia. The shelters success surpassed his budget and the six-member board of directors insisted that he cut the amount of food being given to his charges. He quit instead of cutting back. Resentment consumed him. His family despaired that he might not come to his senses. His work was destroyed by what he saw as the short-sightedness of others. His health was well past the breaking point. “Everywhere I went, I took me with me,” he later said. During a trip to recuperate in Europe, he exhausted the funds his father gave him and existed on the kindness of his family and the generosity of acquaintances. Tired and dejected he went to an Evangelical Conference in Keswick, England, hoping to connect with F.B. Meyer, a famous minister he knew, for spiritual help. Meyer was not in attendance; another plan gone awry. July 27, 1908, thirty year-old Frank Buchman, a Pennsylvanian Lutheran Minister, walked into an afternoon service with 17 other people to hear Jessie Penn Lewis preach on the cross of Christ. And then it happened. As Buchman sat in that Chapel, “There was a moment of spiritual peak of what God could do for me. -

Sammanlagt sju IDP kvinnor i staden Zugdidi i Georgien deltog. -
First Edition
First Edition Background: In an effort to enhance the student reflection experience in our campus wellness clinics, staff initiated a monthly blogging activity during this school year. Students were tasked with creating one blog per month on pre-determined professional workplace skills topic. Students were trained on how to create an effective blog, as well as, how to respond to a blog entry. Students wrote blogs after the second clinic of each month. Staff selected a winning entry from each program clinic and students then responded to the winning entries after the fourth clinic of each month. An awards certificate and award were handed out each month to the winning entries. Why Student Blogging: • Allows students to express and hone their creativity • Promotes academic integration in Career and Technical Education courses • Regular writing sharpens the brain ’s performance • Promotes expression of self • Boosts student confidence • Improves communication skills Student Outcomes: • Students gained “know-how ” that can enrich and benefit their clinic experience • Students were able to speak their mind • Students expressed “finding themselves ” and “finally understanding ” when reading or writing blog entries • Winning entries received constructive feedback from student peers • Blogging allowed students to develop unique content and express their clinic experience perspective to others Please enjoy reading our student blog entries on their CAVIT wellness clini c experiences! We Smile Together Here at CAVIT ☺☺☺ The word together symbolizes a group effort, here at CAVIT we work together to get things done efficiently. Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium
Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century. -

Give Me Something to Sing About": Intertextuality and the Audience in "Once More, with Feeling"
Chapter 12 "Give Me Something to Sing About": Intertextuality and the Audience in "Once More, with Feeling" Amy Bauer "I love all musicals." (Joss Whedon, audio commentary to "Once More, with Feeling.") Critics hailed "Once More, with Feeling" (6.7) as a brilliant example of the television musical. Its musical numbers flow from the narrative, yet prove integral to the seven-year arc of the series, and its eclectic but unified score was written expressly for the talents of a cast (mostly) new to the genre. Notably, its book, score, and concept all sprang from one mind, that of the Buffyverse's primary architect, Joss Whedon. Although untrained in musical composition, Whedon's affection for and knowledge of the American musical are everywhere evident, even if we did not have John Kenneth Muir's admission that he is a "virtual encyclopedia of musical film history."1 Analogous to the combined cinematic genres-from horror to religious epic-that mark Buf/Y the Vampire Slayer and Angel, "Once More, with Feeling" alludes to Sondheim and Loesser alongside the sardonic charm of 1940s music, 1950s swing jazz, 1970s arena rock, 1980s power ballads, and 1990s soft-rock confessionals, all within a lean, swift-moving structure that performs the dramatic functions of the classic American musical. Much has already been written regarding the novelty, influence, and intertextual richness of the Buf/Y musical.2 My contribution to that literature analyzes the musical structure of the songs themselves and places it in a dialogic relationship to the sources they summon. Such intertextual richness acknowledges fans' devotion to and knowledge of both the show's history and cultural references to the John Kenneth Muir, Singing a New Tune: The Rebirth ofthe Modern Film Musical, from Evita to De-Lovely and Beyond (New York, 2005), p. -
