'Bite Me': Buffy and the Penetration of the Gendered Warrior-Hero
Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies, Vol. 16, No. 2, 2002 ‘Bite Me’: Buffy and the penetration of the gendered warrior-hero SARA BUTTSWORTH, University of Western Australia Introduction Can the ultimate girl be the ultimate warrior? If warrior identity is simultaneously a quintessentially masculine identi er, and one of the core expressions of ‘innate’ masculinity, then the biggest transgression of warrior iconography posed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Buffy’s gender. Buffy is both like and not like ‘other girls’. The social conventions of mainstream femininity, which have so often been used to argue that women cannot be warriors, are often precisely what make Buffy such an effective soldier in her speculative world. The blurred boundaries that are possible in speculative texts open up space necessary to examine the arguments and gendered ideologies which govern what is, and what is not, possible in the ‘real’ world. Such texts can often make explicit what is implied in more ‘realistic’ representations, and can either destabilize or reinforce gendered cultural conventions.1 Established as the ‘chosen one’ in the 1992 lm, and then in the television series which debuted mid-season in 1997, Buffy has slashed her way not only through the ctional constraints placed upon her predecessors in vampire carnage, but through the conventions governing gendered constructions of the warrior.2 Warrior tradition con- structs a coherent masculinity, including impenetrable male bodies, as the key to warrior identity, and renders ‘slay-gal’3 not only paradoxical but, arguably, impossible. It is this (im)possibility, and the ways in which Buffy the Vampire Slayer fractures and reinvents the gendered identity of the warrior-hero, which are explored in this article. -

The thesis, ‘‘The Measure- ment of the Timing of the Economic Impact of Defense Procurement Activity: An Analysis of the Vietnam Buildup,’’ set out how defense contractors and procurement policies of the U.S. Department of De- fense worked to undermine economic stability: It is the purpose of this dissertation to demonstrate that sufficiently accu- rate information about the timing of the impact on economic output of defense procurement activity did not exist during the Vietnam buildup. -

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics, 2020, 13, 445-465 445 © 2020 College Sport Research Institute The Impact of Person-Environment Fit on the Academic Satisfaction of Division II Student-Athletes __________________________________________________________ Mark A Beattie Fort Lewis College Brian A Turner The Ohio State University ________________________________________________________ Over the last decade, both the NCAA (“Life in the Balance,” n.d.) and the academy (Cooper, 2016; Huml, Svensson, & Hancock, 2017) have emphasized the importance of holistic student- athlete development. In fact, an emerging trend among Division I institutions is the construction of academic support centers designed to facilitate the academic and professional development of student-athletes. However, some scholars have questioned their overall effectiveness in achieving those ends (Huml, Hancock, & Bergman, 2014). Such facilities are not as common among Division II athletic departments, challenging those institutions to find other ways to maximize student-athlete development. The purpose of this study was to explore how perceived person-environment fit affects student-athlete academic satisfaction, one such measure of holistic development. Survey data was collected from 257 student-athletes at four different Division II institutions within one athletic conference. A hierarchical multiple regression determined that person-environment fit uniquely explained 9.7% of the variability in academic satisfaction. Additionally, the final regression model reported that person-teammate fit was a statistically significant, demonstrating the salience of interpersonal relationships among teammates. This article concludes with a discussion of practical implications for stakeholders within the Division II environment. PAYDAY Script
PAYDAY SCREENPLAY BY CHARLES HARDING 216 ACKLEN ST. 985-991-2103 FADE IN EXT. ESTABLISHING SHOT. The sun slowly rises up above the horizon. Traffic moves to a steady pace on the highways. School buses transport noisy kids down residential streets. Houses that look expensive and very well kept are drizzled lightly from the sprinkler systems. Storekeepers lift up iron gates to open their business. We are witnessing the awakening of a small town. Everything and everybody seems tranquil and normal. Except not today. INT. KITCHEN MORNING A small kitchen that is in the center of this apartment shared by a young couple and their daughter. The sink has a few dishes left in it from last night’s dinner. The refrigerator is covered with crudely drawn pictures of flowers, animals and hearts with crooked arrows going through them and the words “I love you daddy” written in crayon. CHRIS JONES 22 enters the kitchen wearing a T shirt and boxers. He’s a good looking chap with a few tattoos and a nice build. He has a street smart swagger about himself. He opens the cupboard and pulls down a box of Fruity Pebbles cereal as well as milk, bowl and spoon. ANGEL ROBINSON 21 Chris’s girlfriend enters the kitchen. She is a young woman with lots of natural beauty that’s both simple and inviting. Their three year old daughter ASHLEY follows behind carrying a Sponge bob doll. ANGEL (Dryly) Morning. CHRIS (Equally drying) Morning. Something is not right with these two. ASHLEY (Excitedly) 2. Morning daddy!!! Ashley jumps up into his lap and gives him a tight hug. -

Collver Letters.Pdf
The Collver Letters, Indexed Version 11/6/2008a When Gordon Ross told me about publishing the Collver Letters, I was very excited to get a copy. My brother, Dan, had given me a disk with images of the original letters but it was much easier to read the typed versions. Unfortunately, few copies were printed and an electronic version was unavailable. So, I manually retyped the letters from Gordon and Barbara's transcriptions. I added a time line and an index to the names mentioned in the letters. These additions are found at the end of this copy. At a later date, I hope to expand the index with additional information, names and references. I would like to thank the Powell family for the preservation and sharing of these letters, which contain so much of my family's history. I would also like to thank Gordon Ross and Barbara Sytsma for their work in transcribing the letters for others to read and enjoy. I would also like to thank my cousin, Dennis Collver, for all the good work he has put into the Collver web site. If you are interested in learning more about the Collver family, his web site is a good place to start. Here is the current web address: http://www.collver.org/collver I would welcome any additions, corrections or questions. My email address is: [email protected] and my phone number is 541-572-0473. Greg Collver THE COLLVER LETTERS This collection of letters was lovingly made available by the descendants of Adelia Emily Collver Powell, who was born on the Oregon Trail near Provo, Utah, during the winter of 1851-1852.
