Member Handbook Welcome to the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program consists of a belt ranking system that begins at white belt and progresses to black belt. Each belt level consists of specific techniques in 7 major categories; takedowns, sweeps, guard passes, submissions, defenses, escapes, and combinations. Techniques begin with fundamentals and become more difficult as each level is reached. In addition, each belt level has a corresponding number of techniques for each category. The goal for each of us should be to become a Master, the epitome of the professional warrior. WARNING: Jiu-Jitsu, like any sport, involves a potential risk for serious injury. The techniques used in these classes are being demonstrated by highly trained professionals and are being shown solely for training purposes and competition. Doing techniques on your own without professional instruction and supervision is not a substitute for training. No one should attempt any of these techniques without proper personal instruction from trained instructors. Anyone who attempts any of these techniques without supervision assumes all risks. About BUDO Jiu-Jitsu BUDO is translated from Japanese as the Way of War. Jiu-Jitsu is interpreted as "Soft Technique". Some would elaborate to it's deeper meaning of 'doing what is easy', or 'going with the Flow'. Like other arts such as Aikido or Judo we use the energy of the attacker against them. BUDO Jiu-Jitsu is translated as The Way of War using Practical Technique. Failure to adhere to his/her commands will result in penalties assessed, disqualification, event ejection with potential probation from future NAGA events. • NAGA Referees are among the very best trained submission grappling / Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu officials worldwide. • NAGA Referees will perform to the highest standards possible to keep ALL competitors as safe as possible during a NAGA event. • NAGA Referees reserve the right to stop a match at absolutely any given time he/she feels injury is imminent regardless of skill or belt rank. • NAGA Referee decisions are final and may not be contested by competitors, coaches or spectators during a NAGA event. • NAGA Referees will officiate each match according to the rules outlined by this rules manual with unbiased intentions towards any competitor, coach, team or spectator attending any NAGA competition. Please note: The NAGA Event Coordinator can overturn any referee decision due to a referee error. White to Blue Belt Test The new test for blue belt is not so you can regurgitate moves and get a belt. The purpose is to make sure you have a good fundamental understanding of the basics of Brazilian Jiujitsu. Along with this we also want to make sure you have a good understanding of the game that you play and the techniques you use. With this is mind the test will require you to perform and explain very specific movements and techniques, as well as having you demonstrate your own favorite moves and techniques. Escapes You will be required to perform and demonstrate escapes from the basic positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Along with showing the techniques you will need to explain the body positioning needed for these techniques. • 3 mount escapes • 3 side mount escapes. 1 for each of the 3 basic side mount positions • 2 back mount escapes • 1 north south escape • 1 knee on belly escape • 2 guard breaks Submission Escapes / Defense You will be required to perform and demonstrate submission escapes and defenses. JUDO BLACK BELT SOUTH AFRICA ASSOCIATION YUDANSHA SYLLABUS NIDAN (2nd Grade Black Belt) The rank of Nidan is an extension of Shodan and the judoka is expected to continue his progress and refine the fundamental skills he has learned for Shodan. Time in grade is important as the judoka matures and continues in his study of judo. This is a time when the judoka also “makes his/her judo work for him” and applies the basic skills so that they best suit his strength, size and any other factors. This is also a time when the judoka assists a senior coach or starts teaching on his own so that he has a better understanding of as many aspects of judo as possible. The student is required to attend as many FJSAOA and/or IFJA clinics, seminars, workshops and classes as possible to improve his skill level. The student is also required to go through coach education and become accredited or certified as an FJSAOA or IFJA Judo Coach (this applies to everyone, including competitive judo athletes). There are few additional technical requirements for Nidan other than the fact that the judoka must progress in the quality of his technical skills and understanding of judo. If the judoka’s technical skill was a “7” on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 as the best), then he should improve it to as close to “10” as possible to be a Nidan. The judoka is expected to broaden his functional knowledge base as much as possible. It’s best to have the judoka work under the supervision of a senior coach so his skill level can be better assessed and suggestions on individual improvement can be made. -

Nokido Ju-Jitsu & Judo Student Handbook North Port, Florida Shihan Earl DelValle HISTORY OF JU-JITSU AND NOKIDO JU-JITSU Ju-Jitsu (Japanese: 柔術), is a Japanese Martial Art and a method of self defense. The word Ju- Jitsu is often spelled as Jujutsu, Jujitsu, Jiu-jutsu or Jiu-jitsu. "Jū" can be translated to mean "gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding." "Jitsu" can be translated to mean "art" or "technique" and represents manipulating the opponent's force against himself rather than directly opposing it. Ju-Jitsu was developed among the samurai of feudal Japan as a method for defeating an armed and unarmed opponent in which one uses no weapon. There are many styles (ryu) and variations of the art, which leads to a diversity of approaches, but you will find that the different styles have similar, if not the same techniques incorporated into their particular style. Ju-Jitsu schools (ryū) may utilize all forms of grappling techniques to some degree (i.e. throwing, trapping, restraining, joint locks, and hold downs, disengagements, escaping, blocking, striking, and kicking). Japanese Ju-Jitsu grew during the Feudal era of Japan and was expanded by the Samurai Warriors. The first written record of Ju-Jitsu was in 1532 by Hisamori Takeuchi. Takenouchi Ryu Ju-Jitsu is the oldest style of Ju-jitsu and is still practiced in Japan. There are hundreds of different Ju-Jitsu styles that have been documented and are practiced today, one of which is our modern style of Ju-Jitsu, Nokido Ju-Jitsu. Ju-Jitsu is said to be the father of all Japanese Martial Arts. -

Depending on the number of competitors participating in a division, it is possible that a single loss could eliminate a competitor’s opportunity to compete further in their division. Bracketing When bracketing, it sometimes becomes necessary to collapse divisions. When doing so, the safety and fairness of the competitors is paramount. The general rule of thumb when collapsing is one of the following: • Mix genders (4-11 years old only) • Move up in Age (no more than 2 years) • Move up in Weight (10 lbs / 4.5 kg or less) • Move up in Rank (only 1 rank, 4-15 years old only) Aside from collapsing the genders, it is uncommon to do more than one of the two options listed above. There are exceptions to this rule. Example: 9-year-old boy that weighs 64 lbs can be moved to the 10-11 year-old division against a 10-year-old girl that weighs 67 lbs. -
