    chapter 2 Dominant Groups and State-Making 1 The Early Nineteenth Century Purely external factors determined the creation of Finland as a distinct polit- ical entity. As Edward C. Thaden dryly puts it, ‘Finnish autonomy, and even the existence of a Finnish nation, can be considered an incidental byproduct of wars between Sweden and Russia during the eighteenth and at the beginning of the nineteenth centuries’.1 Prior to 1809 the mainly Finnish-speaking territories east of the Gulf of Both- nia and north of the Gulf of Finland were an integral part of Sweden. As on the other side of the Gulf of Bothnia, the language of the elites was Swedish. The sea did not separate but rather united the eastern provinces with the hub of the state, and these were more oriented to Stockholm than to each other (see Chapter 4). The south-western region of what later became the Finnish state belonged more or less to the core of the Swedish kingdom, whereas the other regions remained at the periphery. The concept of Finland existed, but it was more a geographical term than a political one. Initially it referred to the south- western region, which had been strongly linked to the core of the state from the thirteenth century onward. Only later was it extended to cover the Finnish- speaking peripheries, which in the course of the subsequent centuries came under the firm control of the Swedish monarchs.2 At the end of the eighteenth century about 15 percent of the total population consisted of Swedish-speakers, most of whom were engaged in farming and fishing on the coastal regions.

The causes of the conflict lay primarily in the world political situation. Germany had already began a war of conquest by invading Poland September first of the same year. Soviet Union sought to protect its borders in view of surging fascist ideas and Germany’s intents to expand. The Soviet Union had primarily wanted to solve the dispute diplomatically before the outbreak of the war. To safeguard itself, the USSR had two aims: First, to move the Finno-Russian border further away from Leningrad, giving Finland a twofold area of land further north along the border in return. Second, to stop any outside force from attacking the Soviet Union through Finnish territories. The Soviets also wanted some certain strategically important areas, including a few islands in the Gulf of Finland in order to prevent a landing to Finland or the Baltics. The suggestions put forward by the Soviet Union were discussed between the states. The Soviet Union was interested in a mutual defense treaty with Finland. The Soviets and Finland would repel an attacker together should they tread on Finland. Representatives from both countries met over half a dozen times, but in the end the offer was refused. The reasons were numerous; the leaders of the state harbored an aggressive “Greater Finnish” ideology that they had fermented within the populace all throughout 1920’s and 30’s. The idea of Greater Finland was based on the goal of incorporating northwestern parts of the Soviet Union into Finland.

Talvi- ja jatkosodan jälkeen Suomi luovutti Karjalan aluetta Neuvostoliitolle. Sen seurauksena 420 000 karjalaista siirtyi muualle Suomeen niiltä alueilta. Siirtokarjalaiset olivat etnisiä karjalaisia ja suomalaisia, jotka puhuivat karjalaa tai karjalan murretta, ja osa oli ortodoksisia kristittyjä. Heidän perinteensä, kielensä ja identiteettinsä heikkenivät, koska ortodoksiseen kirkkoon kuuluvat oudosti puhuvat siirtokarjalaiset siirtyivät historiallisesti luterilaisille, yleis- suomenkielisille alueille. Siirtokarjalainen kulttuuri on tärkeä osa Suomen historiaa ja kulttuuria, ja siksi haluan tutkia karjalaisuuden asemaa ja relevanssia siirtokarjalaisten lastenlasten elämässä. Tutkimuskysymykseni ovat, mitä siirtokarjalaisesta kulttuurista, kokemuksista ja muistoista on siirtynyt siirtokarjalaisten lastenlasten identiteetteihin nykypäivänä, ja miten Karjala ja karjalaisuus näkyvät siirtokarjalaisten lastenlasten tietoisuudessa. The chair lived upstairs my grandparents house. It was unsteady. It was difficult to climb to sit on it, and impossible to stand on. Adults forbade standing on the chair, and after an attempt even a four-year-old realised the stool was not meant for this purpose. Quite a few others have not been afraid of this chair, because Alvar Aalto ‘stool number 60’ has been sold in millions since it was first designed in 1933..’1 This is a description by a journalist in a Finnish interior magazine ‘Deko’, which leads me to the topic of this paper. This paper begins with two notions: First, it is suggested that an essential part of Alvar Aalto’s fame is rooted in furniture designs and the distribution of these via the Artek company, established in 1935. Second, the hypothesis is that so many Finns, far beyond architecture and design enthusiasts recognise Aalto’s name still today because the Artek furniture remains to be part of many peoples’ mundane, ’everyday life’. The motivation for focusing on Artek furnishings in buildings not by Aalto is on one hand to not tease apart Artek’s independent role, but on the other hand, because living in Finland, I have found myself only too often awakening to the realisation of being surrounded by Artek furniture in spaces as kindergartens, hospitals, governmental offices, and libraries.

Teosta pidetään Aallon uran käännekohtana ja yhtenä maailmansotien välisen moder- nismin kansainvälisesti keskeisimpänä teoksena. Eurooppalainen arkkitehtuuri koki tuolloin valtavan ideologisen muutoksen pyrkiessään vastaamaan yhä nopeammin teollis- tuvan ja kaupungistuvan yhteiskunnan haasteisiin. Aalto tuli kosketuksiin avantgardisti- arkkitehtien kanssa Congrès internationaux d’architecture moderne -järjestön piirissä vuodesta 1929 alkaen. Hän pyrki Paimion parantolassa, siihenastisen uransa haastavim- massa työssä, soveltamaan uutta näkemystään arkkitehtuurista. Työn teoreettisena näkökulmana on ranskalaisen sosiologin Bruno Latourin (1947–) aktiivisesti kehittämä toimijaverkkoteoria, joka korostaa paitsi sosiaalisten, myös materi- aalisten tekijöiden osuutta teknologisten järjestelmien muotoutumisessa. Teorian mukaan sosiaalisten ja materiaalisten toimijoiden välinen suhde ei ole yksisuuntainen, mikä huo- mio avaa kiinnostavia näkökulmia arkkitehtuuritutkimuksen kannalta.
