PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Wickenden Wonderland, Dec 21, Rings In Holiday Spirit Caroling is part of the Christmas tradition. Ordinary folks gracing their neighborhood with their own style of holiday cheer is commonplace in many cities. Fox Point on the PVD East Side, one of the city’s neighborhoods with an artistic temperament, is putting their own spin on it. Wickenden Wonderland – Thursday, Dec 21, 6-8pm – is a celebration put together by the Fox Point Neighborhood Association, and it is for a great cause. Raising money for the homeless with Amos House, this wonderland provides a glimpse of beauty in the human spirit. It also looks like a damned good time. The start is the Point Tavern 6-7pm with drinks and plans for merrymaking. The kitchen will be occupied by Great Northern Barbeque, so it’s an opportunity to enjoy delicious food among friends. There will be drink specials at the Point, and their beverages are a great way to lubricate your singing voice – and no one should be caroling on an empty stomach. Revenue from food and drink sales will go toward Amos House. This all makes for a stellar reason to join in on the fun. At 7pm, the party moves to George M. Cohan Plaza (the intersection of Wickenden and Governor Streets) for what the event Facebook page describes as “great musical accompaniment of the Mighty Good Boys. There will be hot chocolate and cookies for everyone!” If you find yourself on PVD’s East Side or you’re in the city looking for something to do on a Thursday night, then celebrate the holiday season with a caroling crowd. -

We have lost all compassion for our fellow man and abused everything in sight. “The 25th Hour” is upon us. Terror formed in 2002 as a direct reaction to what was occurring in the underground musical scene that they called home. Disgusted with what was being presented and passed off as hardcore, they attempted to reclaim the bastardized genre by playing the music as it had originated; in its most raw, honest and angry form. Immediately, there was a connection with likeminded people across the globe, and led the band to continually play shows all over the world. Terror started as an idea, but quickly turned into a crusade. Terror captured the ferocity that the genre had been missing, and with their amazing work ethic and nihilistic approach to touring, they became the hardcore flag-bearers of this generation. Terror’s last few albums created movements immediately upon their release. The titles summed up the current climate of hardcore music and served as a rally cry for all its believers. Their new album follows this same suit. The current incarnation of the band, which features the longest tenured lineup in their history, assembled last fall with one intent: to act defiantly in “The 25th Hour.” If this is truly our potential climax, all would be stripped away and we would return to our most basic form. -

MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies. -
